Pets, children, resident menfolk.

eustonagain · 09/09/2022 08:36

Tumble drier, Nest/Hive, a cleaner.

Freeasabird76 · 09/09/2022 08:38

Dishwasher
Sky tv
Amazon prime
Ring Doorbell
Laptop
PC
Car

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 08:42

Sky TV

I would find life difficult without a smartphone these days as so many everyday things are reliant on having one - train tickets, banking app, tickets to events, checking traffic conditions on my route to work, sat nav, being able to keep in touch with DD, mumsnetting Grin, plus numerous other stuff.

HikingBoots · 09/09/2022 08:44

An Alexa.
We also only just bought (at 38) our first ever microwave and toaster, because of the energy crisis!

RampantIvy · 09/09/2022 08:44

I assume that people without a laptop don't work from home or have teenage DC who need one for school?

I often find that websites are much easier to navigate on a laptop than on something with a smaller screen and a touch screen keyboard.

CousinGregg · 09/09/2022 08:47

Alexa

JOFFCV · 09/09/2022 08:47

Dishwasher

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 09/09/2022 08:49

Alexa

Microwave

Makeup

A vibrator

NovaDeltas · 09/09/2022 08:51

The more techie people are in their careers, the less technical guff they have around their house. As a developer, I don't go in for Alexa's or tablets for children or any smart item. I don't know any developers who do.

No TV subscription because I don't watch it.

No car because I don't use one. I live in the middle of the city. Public transport.

No interest in kitchen gadgets.

My kids don't have phones because they've never asked for one. They have no interest in setting up social media.

ApiratesaysYarrr · 09/09/2022 08:52

A car
Make up
Jewellery

Strugglingtodomybest · 09/09/2022 08:56

What a strange thread. Surely we need a list of common things to pick from? I don't know what's common or not really, I mean, someone upthread said a boat. Owning a boat might be common in some circles but it isn't in mine!

Although, this could be an opportunity to make out I'm richer than I am...

So my list is:

Yacht (but only because I get sea sick)
Private jet (one day! But for now I have to slum it in first class)
Heated swimming pool (hoping to get our pool upgraded this winter though)
Butler (there's a world wide shortage, but we're on the waiting list at least!)
Private island (I prefer to holiday somewhere with other people so that I can display my wealth)
Chauffeur (I like driving)

AnneBoIeyn · 09/09/2022 08:59

Car
Big TV/more than one TV
Smart watch
Fancy phone (or in D's case, a phone full stop)
A home (ie a mortgage)

Trespatch · 09/09/2022 09:04

Asset wise I have upwards of a million, cash wise a couple of thousand disposable income a month.

My car is a 15 year old Ford Mondeo, I cut my own hair, I don't eat out, no Netflix or Prime, I buy good quality clothes on Ebay or charity shops rather than buying new, I walk a lot rather than use the car, haven't got a dishwasher or tumble dryer, use a second hand TV, no gadgets and bought a second hand Smartphone for £25 and pay £4 a month for data & unlimited minutes. My laptop is a refurbished Thinkpad I bought for £80 a decade ago.

I use Topcashback for car insurance and home insurance, and I shop at Aldi. I've always been a saver rather than a spender, but I'm generous with friends/family so I hope I'm not tight as such! I do have direct debits for a few charities, and I fundraise for one particular charity.

I've never been motivated by money but I am grateful every single day for being comfortable and secure. I just don't need to flaunt it or buy unnecessary things! I have no one to impress, maybe?

MsRosley · 09/09/2022 09:07

Tumble drier, Sky TV, Alexa

CrunchyCarrot · 09/09/2022 09:11

Dishwasher
Smartphone
Air Fryer
Tumble Dryer
Makeup
Alexa
Vibrator
Ring Doorbell
Gaming console
Hairdresser
Netflix

I'm a Neanderthal, clearly.

honeylulu · 09/09/2022 09:14

A "nice" car. Drive an unimpressive 10 year old runaround. I love it. Its reliable and perfect for what I need it for. I don't get the idea that many people have that you should drive the newest/best car you can afford. It probably gives the impression my income is much lower than it is but that suits me fine.

LHReturns · 09/09/2022 01:38

Trying to work out if you are being serious… :)

Yes I don't have or want any of these things

shimmeryseahorse · 09/09/2022 09:18

Dishwasher
tumble dryer
games console
air fryer or other kitchen gadgets like coffee machines, breadmakers, food processors.
alexa
hair dryer
smart meter
ring doorbell
car

Someone asked why people wouldn’t want dishwashers. For me, it takes very little time to wash up and I don’t mind it. It’s not like washing clothes. Therefore, I don’t think the energy and resources put into making the machines and running them are worth it.

BertieQueen · 09/09/2022 09:20

Tumble dryer
ring doorbell
microwave
dishwasher
sky tv/live tv

Vegay · 09/09/2022 09:21

Designer clothes, a brand new car, dishwasher, hot tub. I don't have Sky, but I do have Virgin's basic package (which I've never paid over £46 for).

Always had dogs, but never bought one. Not interested in perpetuating the breeding of dogs.

Don't holiday abroad by flight anymore. Mainly because I've always got a rescue dog, but also because I really hate flying now 😅.

Giggorata · 09/09/2022 09:25

Lawn - garden is mostly courtyard, so don't need one. We have grass on our separate bit of land.
Facebook - too much like hard work
Twitter - haven't got the interest
Alexa - would find it irritating
ring doorbell - don't see the need, any of my village neighbours can tell me exactly who came to the house and when, and probably their dates of birth and zodiac sign as well.
Hive or similar - don't see the need
dishwasher - there's only two of us and trying to save energy, time, etc.
tumble dryer - hell no, not even before the energy crisis, costly and un green.
games console - not at all interested
hot tub - yuk.

I do have lots of subscription TV, iPad, iPhone, kindle, air fryer, etc, so not a complete joyless Luddite.

Argh always press post too soon on this new app!

Tights are not really worn by young people now. I only know one person my generations (30s) with Sky because people just use the subscription services.

Really? I would say 3/4 of the girls at my DDs (13) school wear tights.

A toaster.
People always seem surprised but you can just toast bread under the grill so why would I double up on appliances?

Is it not cheaper to run a toaster than a whole grill for one slice of bread though? (I dont actually know the answer to this, I am surmising!)

Fatballs · 09/09/2022 09:28

Whatever the cost, it’s a whole lot easier to make toast in a toaster. You don’t have to watch it like a hawk.
