To like this poem about the Queen

Phillip came to me today,

and said it was time to go.

I looked at him and smiled,
as i whispered that "I know"

I then turned and looked behind me,

and saw I was asleep.

All my Family were around me,

and I could hear them weep.

I gently touched each shoulder,

with Phillip by my side.

Then I turned away and walked,

with My Angel guide.

Phillip held my hand,

as he lead the way,

to a world where King's and Queens,

are Monarch's every day.

I was
given a crown to wear
or a Halo known by some.

The difference is up here,

they are worn by everyone.

I felt a sense of peace,

my reign had seen its end.

70 years I had served my Country,

as the peoples friend.

Thank you for the years,

for all your time and love.

Now I am one of two again,

in our Palace up above.

I saw it on Facebook and loved it but only seen hate for it on mumsnet :( I think it’s beautiful ❤️

I'm not even a huge fan of Her Majesty, but even I felt embarrassed that someone was using this sort of stuff to represent an intelligent, educated, tasteful woman without the consent of her or her family.

ShowOfHands · 09/09/2022 13:41

I saw it last night and about choked on my cocoa. Poorly-written, mawkish shite.

LuftBalloons · 09/09/2022 13:49

The queen has died and you’re loosing your mind over grammar?

Bad grammar doesn't 'loose' my mind: bad art drives me crazy though.

I found this poem very useful.

Whenever I saw it, it helped me to remember that there were still some dim people from my home town that I'd forgotten to unfollow on Facebook.

Same here

Mochudubh · 09/09/2022 13:53

I saw this shared on FB by someone who said they were "derverstated" by the Queen's death.

I feel like I've eaten 5kg of candyfloss and bathed in Tizer after reading that.

😂

Was it written by Ryan Giggs?

This thread is killing me. A bit of humour is much-needed at present!

As to Facebook, I'm keeping my mouth shut at present. People I previously thought were sensible are reposting this godawful, saccharine, schmaltzy 'poem', some of them together with straplines about a nation in mourning. After the Diana circus this nation collectively lost its senses and I don't think it ever fully regained them.

It's harmless, I suppose, and I have no wish to offend FB friends who can post what they like on their own timelines, but it depresses me how easily people are taken in by this feudal, anachronistic, anti-democratic crock of class-riven BS.

After 5 years of Charles III we'll see if the sentimentality sticks. I'm cautiously optimistic ...

All the people I've seen sharing it are kind hearted, good natured people who aren't brilliant at expressing themselves and haven't had certain advantages that some other people have had.

It's a terrible poem but it doesn't follow that anyone who likes it is a terrible person.

I do agree with this.

In reference to a pp, there’s nothing wrong with being ‘a bit dim’, as you put it. Not everyone can be clever, or even average.

The poem is awful but it doesn’t follow that one must insult or be disparaging toward those with whom it resonates.

SirChenjins · 09/09/2022 14:33

When I read things like that I realise that I don’t actually like the cynical, more vicious part of me. The person who wrote this obviously had a lot of love and respect for the Queen, and is expressing their grief through writing in a way that’s meaningful to them. I haven’t written anything beyond work reports, posts on SM or emails in years - so if someone wants to put pen to paper in this way then I take my hat off to them.

InsertPunHere · 09/09/2022 14:34

Christ on a bike, I thought it was parody and was thinking "too soon, mate"

AlmostDone7 · 09/09/2022 14:37

When you find beauty, enjoy it and don't let other people tell you it's not beautiful.

It took me a while to learn that lesson, and I missed out in the intervening years!

Me too. Genuinely thought it was a pisstake.

Comedycook · 09/09/2022 14:40

The only thing it's missing is a line about how she is now with the angles

Rinoachicken · 09/09/2022 12:06

They haven’t even spelt Philip’s name correctly FFS…

Phillip came to me today,
and said it was time to go.
I looked at him and smiled,
as i whispered “who the fuck are you?!”

😂😂😂😂

Comedycook · 09/09/2022 14:40

Well, some people might say it is obtuse, but they wouldn't be right....

MirandaWest · 09/09/2022 15:38

I don’t like it. The incorrect use of apostrophes annoys me, it doesn’t scan well and I find the sentiment mawkish.

But I understand some people find it helpful.

Comedycook · 09/09/2022 15:40

@AlmostDone7 it's acute poem though

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/09/2022 15:53

If people like it... then that's nice for them!

It puts me in mind of Keith J Furnival of Angry People In Local Newspapers 'fame'... dire drivel without any poetic merit whatsoever, one step up from the Baldrick School of Poetry.

But we can't all like the same things.

AlmostDone7 · 09/09/2022 15:57

@Comedycook

Sorry, just a daft joke because you mistyped angels as angles....😊

inappropriateraspberry · 09/09/2022 16:00

It's awful. Trite, mawkish, naff, soppy and over sentimental. Badly written.
I can't imagine the queen would have liked it either.

Yes...I did it on purpose! 😂because I see so many people on social media doing that!

AlmostDone7 · 09/09/2022 16:06

Oh. I get it! It's acute poem indeed!!!!😅

I thought you missed a space .... ah well that made me laugh anyway.

Arf arf.

You ain't kidding. I've seen it reposted by academics. And I wish I were ...
