Whoops posted early. The 6pm announcement is what was rehearsed for Operation London Bridge so is long-standing plan for this event. The news presenters were dressed in black this afternoon with black ties and the sign language man was dressed in black too - possibly a tad too early for the announcement.

It feels.like they may have jumped the gun? Black earlier but less so now?

Fenella123 · 08/09/2022 17:29

Most likely (my guess) is she passed away earlier today and everything is being lined up for the announcement.

So her family get to say their goodbyes and come to terms with it in private for a little while at least. And so the many, many things that need organising can be set in motion.

This. Edward, Andrew and William have just arrived Not sure if they will wait for Harry.

ThrowingSomeCrumbs · 08/09/2022 17:41

I also know someone who will know. And their credentials aren't press.

And they haven't been warned of a 6pm announcement, or that she has already passed. They have been told it's expected, very soon though.

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 08/09/2022 17:42

Maybe they'were trialing the banner out?

shrunkenhead · 08/09/2022 17:39

@baconbuttieswithsauce because I have my sources and know people who know.

Who do you know? Journalists, government, royal household? So she's died then and they're announcing it at 6?

hopeishere · 08/09/2022 17:42

I think just before six and then a pause and then the six news.

hettyby · 08/09/2022 17:42

I know someone who has said she died at 1:30 this afternoon and it will be announced at 18:00 on the dot so lots of us hearing this!

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 17:43

My friend follows Lady Colin Campbell on her podcast and she announced something apparently.

It flies at half mast though when someone dies

The Royal Standard is never at half mast as there is always a monarch. This caused upset at Diana's death.
They now fly the Union Flag which can be flown half mast.

If that is the case this coverage could go on for days then? Or all night at least.

At least the Queen will die in warmth and luxury.

oh well at least this thread gives you a place to air your grievances about our wonderful monarch who has done more for this nation than you ever will

ApolloandDaphne · 08/09/2022 17:43

It is all very sad but I am glad she is tucked away in Scotland with her family around her.

Even the Global Cycling News presenters (+) covering the Vuelta are all in black!
I'm assuming that a maid went in with the Queen's morning cuppa and found she'd passed away or similar, and today has all been one of those in-between periods where everyone knows but nobody says it.

(+) This never ever happens, "be safe be seen" sort of seeps into the daily fashion choices even in the studio

Yes and they waited to let Truss announce the cost of living stuff before Parliament stops for the next 10 days

Tierne · 08/09/2022 17:44

The EU commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, said:

"My thoughts and prayers are with her. She represents the whole history of the Europe that is our common home with our British friends, she has always given us stability and confidence, she has shown an immense amount of courage, and is a legend in my eyes."

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/09/2022 17:45

There are some vile comments on Twitter - including from Owen Jones.

I'm no great monarchists, but cannot help but feel for an elderly lady coming to to end of her life, and for her family who love her.

If people can't be respectful, or sympathetic, they could at least keep their foul comments to themselves.

She has about as much credibility as horoscopes and most definitely isn't an official spokesperson for BP.

Probably from the same original source and repeated over and over again....

stillherenow · 08/09/2022 17:45

Prince William drove them from the airport to Balmoral? Or at least the final leg. Good for him.

wonderstuff · 08/09/2022 17:46

I wonder if she actually passed when the notes were passed in the commons earlier? Either that or at that point end of life care was started. BBC doing this sort of coverage for days would be a nightmare, although we were in the states when a pope was dying and it was literally days of rolling news like this! BBC don’t get an early announcement, it goes to Associated Press.

Exactly. I can't imagine that letting her know was a fucking priority.

Me too. It would have been horrible for her to be at Windsor with swarms of people surrounding the place. At least Balmoral is relatively remote.
