To ask what the plan is for covid this winter?

Winter will soon be upon us and for many, the worry is understandably how they'll heat their homes. However, covid has not gone away with hundreds dying every week and many more getting long covid.

Not that you would know it from the media, who have moved onto their best story. Am I the only one concerned that there has been no mention of what protections will be in place to protect the nhs when we inevitably have a winter covid wave? Is the message still "let the bodies like high"?

Surely the government should be setting out a plan now for common sense, light touch protections that will help the NHS get through winter? I.e. boosters offered to all, a return to testing and isolating if positive, work from home, high-quality masks indoors, social distancing in hospitality, ventilation in public spaces.

They should also list further protections that may need to be imposed depending on numbers and criteria for these, such as limits on large events, the rule of 6, ban on indoor mixing, blended learning up to full lockdown if unfortunately necessary.

Are the vulnerable and the NHS just going to be fed to the wolves this winter?

No thank you, I won’t be following any measures and I’m pretty sure there won’t be any anyway.

KnickerlessParsons · 07/09/2022 20:31

People who are old or otherwise susceptible to infection are already being offered booster shots. My DM has an appt in early October.

XenoBitch · 07/09/2022 20:32

Booster shots for the eligible. Nothing else.

Where are your sources for hundreds dying each week from covid? I assume that's FROM covid, and not just WITH covid.

Mywatchis · 07/09/2022 20:34

You're having a laugh love, that ship has well and truly sailed

HeddaGarbled · 07/09/2022 20:37

Autumn vaccination booster programme just starting. Also some ongoing discussion of increasing the use of anti-viral medication (apparently we have a lot more available than is currently being used).

Aposterhasnoname · 07/09/2022 20:38

LOL.

AliceAbsolum · 07/09/2022 20:40

Lol. You love the pandemic. Are you sad it's over?

SafeMove · 07/09/2022 20:42

There are some winter covid plans being looked at and some policy decisions being made at the moment (NHS researcher). I don't know the details but my boss was called into some kind of SAGE/NHS England/OHID meeting yesterday. There is some capacity and resource planning in hand.

TreeHouse8 · 07/09/2022 20:43

@AliceAbsolum

Unfortunately the pandemic's not over, however much the government would like you to think so to get you out spending money.

Hundreds are dying every week (likely to be thousands in the winter), millions of people with long covid.

There needs to be some common sense protections in place over winter to keep people safe and ensure the NHS can cope. What exactly is the issue with wearing a mask and keeping a distance from others?

Boosters have been announced for the vulnerable and people over 50. Apparently there are supply issues, though.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/09/2022 20:45

Hmm another government conspiracy.

Porcupineintherough · 07/09/2022 20:49

Quite a lot of people are dying (excess mortality is up again). Some are dying of covid and the number of covid cases is placing more strain on the NHS so more people are dying of other things too (see also all the other causes of strain on the nhs).

But other that more boosters for the vulnerable and better funding for the NHS fat chance there really isn't any more can be done. Covid is here to stay.

lljkk · 07/09/2022 20:49

I wonder how many people (eg in UK) have truly never had covid. Is the claim supposed to be that each and every time you get covid you're at same risk of harm (LC or death etc) regardless of how many jabs or times you had covid before?

CheshireCat1 · 07/09/2022 20:50

There is a plan in place for both Covid and respiratory infections, boosters, including the flu vaccine, antivirals and free tests for immunosuppressed. I was on the antivirals a few weeks ago after contracting Covid and I recovered pretty quickly.

gogohmm · 07/09/2022 20:50

Same as for any other winter dominated virus, vaccinate the vulnerable and hone for the best

Mywatchis · 07/09/2022 20:51

You can wear a mask no one is stopping you. I adhered to every single rule going in 2020 and 2021, I'll never do it again to that degree never.

I've still not had covid, everyone at work has had it.

TeacupDrama · 07/09/2022 20:51

covid deaths for months have been in line with the average rate of deaths from repsiratory infections, the excess deaths over the summer were from cancer heart disease strokes etc, it is thought that dissuading people from using NHS as led to late diagnosis of many diabetic, heart and cancer patients which is now proving fatal, there were excess death sover 5 year average in later summer but that followed several months of below average deaths
the country can't afford any more restrcitions
The issue with wearing masks is that for 16% of population with hearing loss it is socially isolating it leads to anxiety in children which is at epidemic proportios in teenagers, and unless people are wearing high grade mask and swapping them every single time thye are touched ie several times a day they are useless
social distancing is not normall for humans it increases lonliness it is only now we are learning of all the other harms of these policies and I really don't want a return to any of them, people need to work to earn money and children have paid too high a price already, if businesses can't operate many will simply fail leading to a big increase in unemployment

just common sense stay at home if you are really ill and don't visit the vulnerable is you even are a tiny bit ill

Namechanger355 · 07/09/2022 20:53

This isn’t a novel illness anymore and is around to stay

we need to ensure people are boosted and look after themselves but no to stopping the country from functioning again sorry

Flapjacker48 · 07/09/2022 20:53

No - there is no appetite for restrictions, "rules of 6" etc etc

Cantstandsmugness · 07/09/2022 20:54

@TreeHouse8 can i ask what industry you earn your money in?

Theluggage15 · 07/09/2022 20:55

You do what you like, I and everyone else I know doesn’t give a shit about covid anymore. You sound ridiculous.

TeacupDrama · 07/09/2022 20:55

i have never had covid despite never working from home going out and about to the max allowed I was not and am not reckless and having a teenager in school who also never caught it

well be fore covid i would not ever have knowingly visited the vulnerable with even a sore throat or tummy bug never mind covid

your immune system needs to encounter germs to deeal with them

The government lied so much I would not believe anything any of them said whether in England Scotland or Wales
