To ask what the plan is for covid this winter?

TreeHouse8 · 07/09/2022 20:28

Winter will soon be upon us and for many, the worry is understandably how they'll heat their homes. However, covid has not gone away with hundreds dying every week and many more getting long covid.

Not that you would know it from the media, who have moved onto their best story. Am I the only one concerned that there has been no mention of what protections will be in place to protect the nhs when we inevitably have a winter covid wave? Is the message still "let the bodies like high"?

Surely the government should be setting out a plan now for common sense, light touch protections that will help the NHS get through winter? I.e. boosters offered to all, a return to testing and isolating if positive, work from home, high-quality masks indoors, social distancing in hospitality, ventilation in public spaces.

They should also list further protections that may need to be imposed depending on numbers and criteria for these, such as limits on large events, the rule of 6, ban on indoor mixing, blended learning up to full lockdown if unfortunately necessary.

Are the vulnerable and the NHS just going to be fed to the wolves this winter?

I was / am in the clinically extremely vulnerable group. I’ve had 4 jabs. I’ve had covid twice. I think I have long covid now. But fuck me if I’m spending any more of my life altering my ways or shutting myself off. I’m done with it. I want to get out and live my life, I have children to look after, things to do, places I want to go to. Any one of my chronic health conditions could kill me anyway. I’m not wasting any more time worrying about covid.

thankyouforthesun · 07/09/2022 20:56

I thought the reason for the lockdowns was because we couldn't get covid all at once when it was a new virus and none of us were immune.
Now the vast majority of us have been vaccinated and the virus has mutated to make it less serious in many people.
Of course it is still a threat to elderly and otherwise vulnerable people and they are being offered booster vaccines and various other treatments. The NHS is making some winter plans which won't include any kind of lockdown because the costs exceed the benefits now the calculation has changed (vaccines, herd immunity, available treatments, medical knowledge advanced since 2020 etc)

bookworm14 · 07/09/2022 20:56

Social distancing in hospitality is not ‘light touch’ - it would kill off the remaining pubs and restaurants that aren’t already going to be killed off by their astronomical heating bills.

I've still not had covid, everyone at work has had it.

Unless you have checked every single day - and the tests weren't available at the start - you cannot know whether you have had Covid or not.

I wonder how many people (eg in UK) have truly never had covid. Is the claim supposed to be that each and every time you get covid you're at same risk of harm (LC or death etc) regardless of how many jabs or times you had covid before?

Anecdotally, I had it twice. First time was after 2 x jabs - had it quite badly, struggling to breathe (though not bad enough to be hospitalised).

The second time, I'd had a further booster and I had it very mildly - I've had worse colds - and it didn't touch my chest.

HouseOfGuineas · 07/09/2022 20:57

We will never be rid of COVID. We now have to treat it like flu and other seasonal illnesses ie. boosters being offered to the vulnerable and individuals take precautions they see necessary. State intervention is so 2020.

Its interesting to hear Liz and Rushi and others talk retrospectively about what have been done differently to manage COVID. I agree early on no country really knew what we were dealing with so I don’t point fingers as easy to judge in hindsight, but many now saying the lockdowns and schools closures etc. we’re too much. MN was an example of mass hysteria. Had all that money not been spent on furlough and other bailouts I wonder how the decisions and narrative around the cost of living and energy crisis would be different today.

Kendodd · 07/09/2022 20:58

Isn't the plan to gather all vulnerable and elderly and huddle them together in 'warm banks' because they can't afford to heat their homes?

Work in care and had 2 do 3 lfts and pcr every week.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/09/2022 20:58

Also had 3 vaccinations.

😂😂😂

Nice one OP!

carefullycourageous · 07/09/2022 21:00

Plan? HAHAHAHAHA

We don't need much in the way of measures, but a plan for how the NHS is going to manage would be nice.

Overthebow · 07/09/2022 21:02

TreeHouse8 · 07/09/2022 20:43

@AliceAbsolum

Unfortunately the pandemic's not over, however much the government would like you to think so to get you out spending money.

Hundreds are dying every week (likely to be thousands in the winter), millions of people with long covid.

There needs to be some common sense protections in place over winter to keep people safe and ensure the NHS can cope. What exactly is the issue with wearing a mask and keeping a distance from others?

Lots actually. Mask wearing is bad for young children so development, particularly speech. Social distancing is bad for the economy and hospitality is already struggling. That’s before you get to the effects on peoples mental health.

TreeHouse8 · 07/09/2022 21:04

@bookworm14

Social distancing in hospitality is light touch compared to the alternatives, which are closing them or full lockdown, which may need to be implemented if the NHS gets overwhelmed.

A stitch in time saves nine- better put in some light touch protections now than have to go back to full lockdown later.

Yes. What would you like us to do? It’s thanks to prolonged and painful lockdowns that we are economically absolutely fucked

confusedgirlie · 07/09/2022 21:05

Oh do bugger off it is over !

Boosters have been announced for the vulnerable and people over 50. Apparently there are supply issues, though.

I don't think there are any shortages. Where did you hear that?

confusedgirlie · 07/09/2022 21:06

We didn’t go back to full lockdown or even partial lockdown last winter so why would we this winter?

JasmineIndigo · 07/09/2022 21:07

What was the point of us all getting vaccinated if we have another winter disrupted OP?

I've still not had covid, everyone at work has had it.

You probably have but didn't even know it.

I can't believe people are still fretting about covid. I literally couldn't give a shit - you may as well be constantly worrying that you are going to catch any other illness and die from it or get run over when you step out of the house - who wants to live like that? Even my cv mother is going out and about on public transport and living her life as normal. I think some people just have serious anxiety issues or secretly enjoyed all the drama.

confusedgirlie · 07/09/2022 21:08

Theluggage15 · 07/09/2022 20:55

You do what you like, I and everyone else I know doesn’t give a shit about covid anymore. You sound ridiculous.
