To ask what the plan is for covid this winter?

TreeHouse8 · 07/09/2022 20:28

Winter will soon be upon us and for many, the worry is understandably how they'll heat their homes. However, covid has not gone away with hundreds dying every week and many more getting long covid.

Not that you would know it from the media, who have moved onto their best story. Am I the only one concerned that there has been no mention of what protections will be in place to protect the nhs when we inevitably have a winter covid wave? Is the message still "let the bodies like high"?

Surely the government should be setting out a plan now for common sense, light touch protections that will help the NHS get through winter? I.e. boosters offered to all, a return to testing and isolating if positive, work from home, high-quality masks indoors, social distancing in hospitality, ventilation in public spaces.

They should also list further protections that may need to be imposed depending on numbers and criteria for these, such as limits on large events, the rule of 6, ban on indoor mixing, blended learning up to full lockdown if unfortunately necessary.

Are the vulnerable and the NHS just going to be fed to the wolves this winter?

Care home staff didn't get routine testing until May/June 2020. Big window before then when DH staff were not yet routinely tested so their infections went undetected.

Like I have said not had a cold or anything for years, I know I have not had it.

brookstar · 07/09/2022 21:27

Nope, nope ,nope.

I work at a university and the last two years have been hell on earth for staff and students. We need normality now which means no masks or social distancing.

We also can't do that to hospitality. The industry needs all the help it can get.

I think the reality is we all will have to take responsibility for our own health from here on .

I really don’t think we should force rules on mixing and socialising, it’s inhumane.
From articles I’ve read, I do worry about long term permanent damage to health from Sars- Covid infection .
I don’t know what the answer is. The logical sensible thing to do is to encourage mitigations without having laws enforcing them thus reducing transmission rather than the ‘let it rip’ policy that we have now.
🤞 for a pan vaccine to become available. Novavax sounds promising. I’m not sure if this new Moderna one will be any more efficient than the last booster.

Another big issue is schools, where teachers and DC are in infection bowls. Surely it would make sense to at least implement a mask mandate and socios distancing/blended learning where possible?

@RooRem2 Don’t yawn FFS! You’re not even wearing a mask and are literally killing people right now.

sst1234 · 07/09/2022 21:28

What kind of spoon feeding are you looking for OP, in order to satisfy your irrational attitude. People still freaking out about Covid don’t need Covid measures, but help of some other type.

Socially distanced teaching and mask wearing is really shit. It's not possible to teach effectively that way.

As for blended learning - what about working parents? How are they supposed to juggle working and supporting younger children with that?

I did it during 2020/21 and it pretty much broke me. I can't do it again.

Womblesaremyfavouritefood · 07/09/2022 21:34

OP do you have children?

Hbh17 · 07/09/2022 21:34

Vaccinations will continue for certain groups and, as with flu jabs, this is probably sensible. But the (new) Government now understand that any restrictions are pointless and that previous lockdowns did more harm than good.
The vast majority of the population will refuse to test, wear masks & give in to media generated panic.
Some of us may succumb to Covid - same as with flu - but we've all got to die of something, so it really isn't a big deal.

I think it’s an impossible situation. I think it’s far too much pressure in teachers to organise blended learning for some and not others permanently . I would like to see support for parents who prefer to tech their child at home during a period where there are high cases

PollyEsther · 07/09/2022 21:35

Fuck me! Are people still banging on about this?

sst1234 · 07/09/2022 21:37

Someone please give OP a time machine to return back to the future. She’s still stuck in 2020.

Lol. You love the pandemic. Are you sad it's over?

Bit of a juvenile response 🙄

It’s true. Many people have been having withdrawal symptoms now that Covid drama is over.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/09/2022 21:43

Booster jabs are currently available for certain groups, the over 75s, frontline health and social care workers, and those with weakened immune systems.

I imagine they will open them to a wider group later on in the autumn, so presumably those who are eligible for flu jabs.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 07/09/2022 21:44

Sometimes I read things on here that I actually hope are trolling. I'm not saying OP is, so this isn't a troll hunt. Only that it would be preferable to actually meaning any of what she's typed.

SteakExpectations · 07/09/2022 21:45

I had someone at work ask me about this a few weeks ago. I pointed out that there will be no Covid this winter because nobody is going to be testing.

Mariposista · 07/09/2022 21:47

Booster if offered. Other than that planning on doing absolutely nothing about it other than having a chuckle at posts like this.

TokyoTen · 07/09/2022 21:48

I'll get the booster jab but I won't be following any rules.
