To be considering going to A&E?

Woke up at 4am this morning with pain high in the middle of my stomach. Thought maybe trapped wind, took buscopan and windeeze , went to loo twice and no better.
I've not eaten all day cos of this pain. It's like an intense stitch or wind type pain?
I don't know if I should go to a&e or if I should just wait. It's probably a 6 on the pain scale, I can walk around kind of but it's always there. It's about here (see photo)
I don't know what to do.

To be considering going to A&E?

Please get help. My MIL had these gallbladder symptoms last week, left them too long and sadly we buried her today.

Darbs76 · 07/09/2022 18:13

Could be gallstones. Just got to A&E if pains that bad. Take it from someone who was left with half a pancreas and constant pain - don’t ignore it

leopardprintlover88 · 07/09/2022 18:19

@JustDanceAddict did you find out what your pain was?

@Onlytheriver other than the ibroprofen last night I've not taken any pain relief, just busopan and about 5 mins ago some gaviscon.
I've got an appointment at my urgent treatment centre which is within a&e at 7 but it's 20 mins away and not sure if I'm up to driving Sad

@Marmunia1066 Good grief. I'm very sorry to hear that Flowers

my gallbladder pain was much higher up - under my rib cages. My sister had pain in a similar position to yours which turned out to be an inflamed cyst on one of her ovaries. good luck at 7.

gaviscon isn’t a painkiller. Neither is lansoprazole. Why haven’t you taken paracetamol?

@hedgehoglurker I had a light tea about 5pm as I felt a bit nauseous and had a meeting so ate early, then took 2 ibroprofens before bed for some back pain I've been having. I very rarely take them as I used to take them a lot when I was younger but they were the first thing I came across. I took them around 10pm I would say, and then woke up in agony with this pain at 4am. I've been suffering a lot lately with bloating and some kind of acid reflux x

You're not supposed to take ibuprofen on an empty stomach, and if you only had a "light tea" at 5pm, your stomach may well have been pretty empty by the time you took them 5 hours later. Ibuprofen can irritate your stomach, especially if you already have issues with stomach acid, so it may well be best to avoid it and use an alternative painkiller.

The lansoprazole should sort it, but it might take a day or two.

I would call 111. This could (possibly) be appendicitis and my doctor missed it when this happened to me. They will ask you the right questions.

I'm not disagreeing with you about the OP getting further advice but 111 missed my appendicitis and gave me terrible advice. I ended up in A&E later that day after my temperature just started to rocket. I was feeling very unwell though and had absolutely zero appetite, which is fairly typical for appendicitis.

Really she needs examining as it could be any number of things.

So was mine, and it radiated into my right shoulder, and made me vomit.

I only get it if I eat something fatty though, so I'm hoping to avoid surgery.

mariominder · 07/09/2022 18:49

If you can't drive and have no-one who could drive you I do hope you're taking a taxi. Good luck.

CookieCoo · 07/09/2022 18:50

Sounds like gallstones. Excruciating. Hope it gets sorted soon OP

Yeah YABU.

Why don’t grown adults know what A&E stands for? It’s weird.

I think the E stands for Emergency, is that right?!

An Acute abdo (acute abdominal pain) is an Emergency until proven otherwise. The statistics for acute abdo are actually quite eye opening, with around 50% of presentations being nothing much and 50% being something serious that needs treatment, with I think about 10% that could land the HCP in coroners court if they fuck up and miss it (it's a while see I listened to a podcast on it), but you get the idea.

TabithaTittlemouse · 07/09/2022 18:52

Obviously I hope that you are okay op but this really is mumsnet at it’s worst. You’ve been given a variety of diagnoses by people who may or may not be getting information from holby city.

are you also waiting for the ‘I’ve phoned an ambulance’ update?

DWMoosmum · 07/09/2022 19:31

@leopardprintlover88 yes, almost exactly the same place. It started with a sensation of food sticking in my oesophagus and then the pain started under my breast bine but would radiate up to my shoulder which worried me. The meds have worked wonders though. The esomeprazole is a bit stronger so started working quicker as well. Im still waiting for an 'urgent' appt with the gastroenterologist form June but hey ho, it's all but fine now. Mine started up during a period of real upset. Have you had anything upsetting or unsettling recently? x

leopardprintlover88 · 07/09/2022 22:10

@DWMoosmum Yes! I've recently split up with my partner and we had a huge argument Sunday and I spent most of Monday trying not to cry. Wonder if it's connected! X

@leopardprintlover88 How did it go last night? Hope your pain is better.

leopardprintlover88 · 08/09/2022 09:59

@hedgehoglurker I'm back this morning for a scan as they want to rule out an ovarian cyst or appendicitis. I've taken 3 lansoprazole now though and although I'm still in quite a lot of pain, I'm not in the agony I was all day yesterday so my gut feeling is you and the doctor I spoke to at my gp are right, and it's an ulcer. Thank you for caring Flowers I'll keep you updated x

OP posts:
Loachworks · 08/09/2022 10:18

Have they offered you an endoscopy? Or tested for h.pylori? Ultrasounds won't spot an ulcer.
I had many ulcers (no h.pylori) so they didn't respond to treatment.

hedgehoglurker · 08/09/2022 10:19

It's wonderful that you are being seen so quickly and will get things ruled out. Good luck today!

Ovarian cyst is a surprising thought, so your pain is possibly more generalised than just that high point.

My Gastroenterologist felt one whilst examining me for another issue and he scanned me immediately to confirm, it was 7cm. However, when my Gynaecologist had me scanned, it had already burst (very painfully). I get them from ovulation, so have had many, but they self-resolve by bursting. For me they are a very different pain from the ulcer and in a different location.

leopardprintlover88 · 08/09/2022 10:53

@hedgehoglurker the worst pain is by far the middle high up pain but I've got some lower cramps (If I'm honest I think that could even be a separate pain from ovulation or something but they asked if I had pain anywhere else and was tender all over when they examined my stomach) so I think they are just wanting to cover all bases which is good. I am impressed to have been seen twice in 24 hours and a next day scan.
Do you feel sick when you have ulcers? I just tried some toast before I leave as I didn't eat at all yesterday.. I couldn't finish it as I thought I was going to vomit.
The GP said if the lansoprazole doesn't work after 2 weeks to let her know and she would send me for an endoscopy. She said if the pain didn't ease from what it was yesterday to either see her sooner, or go to hospital like I did.
Thank you all! Xx

leopardprintlover88 · 08/09/2022 10:55

@Loachworks I went to my GP in July as I've had heartburn almost every day for months so he tested for H.pylori then, and it came back negative. What treatment did you have for your ulcer? I've got to take 60mg lansoprazole a day for 2 weeks apparently 🤷🏼‍♀️ did you find out what caused yours? I used to take a lot of ibroprofen etc but this was at least 5 or so years ago.

OP posts:
leopardprintlover88 · 08/09/2022 17:15

The pains not as horrendous as yesterday but still there 😢 I try eating and I wretch, I feel like I need the toilet but nothing happens.. I just don't know what to do. Scan showed nothing in terms of my appendix being inflamed. Showed a scar on my right ovary that was it. Don't know what to do xx

OP posts:
hedgehoglurker · 08/09/2022 20:46

It sounds like you need to hang in there, unless it gets worse. You've had an examination now, and some tests and qualified medical opinions in person, so it probably will just take a little time for the medication to work.

Did they advise on what and when to eat? Any pain relief advised like paracetamol?

I'm no medic, but the ovary scarring could suggest a cyst that has burst/ resolved. In my experience, they can be really painful, cause nausea, etc.

It must be hard if you are alone with the baby, but hopefully you have support.
