To be considering going to A&E?

Woke up at 4am this morning with pain high in the middle of my stomach. Thought maybe trapped wind, took buscopan and windeeze , went to loo twice and no better.
I've not eaten all day cos of this pain. It's like an intense stitch or wind type pain?
I don't know if I should go to a&e or if I should just wait. It's probably a 6 on the pain scale, I can walk around kind of but it's always there. It's about here (see photo)
I don't know what to do.

To be considering going to A&E?

"I actually took 2 ibroprofen last night before bed for an unrelated issue do you think that could've triggered it?"

Ibuprofen gives me horrendous upper abdo pain (I don't take it any more).

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/09/2022 17:32

What was your back pain? Gall stones very often presents as pain in/around the shoulder blade. I'd mention the ongoing backpain when you see urgent care - it may not be your back at all iyswim!

Yeah YABU.

Why don’t grown adults know what A&E stands for? It’s weird.

It is actually ED, not A&E. It changed a long time ago.

I agree - 111 if unable to get in contact with the GP for a review.

OP be mindful of continuous loose stools and if you begin to vomit, you will become dehydrated quickly.

lurchermummy · 07/09/2022 17:32

Sounds like trapped wind, which is very painful I grant you

BlodynGwyn · 07/09/2022 17:33

Before I had my gall bladder removed, I found that jumping about unclogged the bile duct and gave me relief. Sitting still made the pain much worse. I also avoided all fats in my diet, and so with all the jumping jacks and almost zero fat diet I lost weight and became rather fit. This worked for me for a year or so, but I don't advise it.

Why? She’s not had an accident, and it’s not an emergency.

Quite right with the first statement. You can't possibly know with the second. Pain is really subjective. People can genuinely think they are dying from quite a minor condition. Other people might say they are in 'discomfort' with a major condition. That's why physical examination is so important because the physical signs are combined with the symptoms the patient experiences to arrive at a differential diagnosis that can be explored. Assumptions lead to misdiagnosis.

Onlytheriver · 07/09/2022 17:36

Pancreatitis and you need urgent medical attention.

Onlytheriver · 07/09/2022 17:39

How long have you had the pain?

Loachworks · 07/09/2022 17:50

My 10 and your 10 are probably very different. I discussed this with a pain specialist yesterday. She said she always asked lots of questions to try to ascertain a true scale.

My 10 is a perforated bowel or when the epidural (used as pain relief post major surgery) stops working.

My labours are precipitous so very fast, very painful and no drugs. The back to back one I'd put at a nine.

A six would for me would merit a trip to a pharmacist or an email to my GP but your six might be my ten...

Winnietheboo · 07/09/2022 17:52

The pain scale is more to see how a patient is fluctuating anyway, ie if someone comes in as a 4 and then goes to a 7 later on its clear their pain is getting worse. It's not an accurate scale that directly relates over different people, you can usually tell more by how someone is acting ie if someone says they're a 10 but they're happily walking around and using the affected body part it's unlikely its an actual 10.

DWMoosmum · 07/09/2022 17:52

I had this a couple of months ago. I suffer with reflux but it had got really bad and was giving me chest pains and difficulty swallowing. Doc gave me lanzoprazole to start with, which did nothing, so now I'm taking esomeprazole and it's worked a treat, no more pain. However when it was bad I was questioning on whether I was having a mild heart attack.

With anything like this, don't take to mums net, call 111 or go to A&E, however, don't drive yourself as If it is a heart attack and you go into a spasm, you could cause an accident.

Hope you got it sorted.

OldFan · 07/09/2022 17:54

As it would take two weeks to get an appointment to see a GP, you may as well go to A&E.

You can usually get a same day urgent appointment if you call first thing or first thing after lunch.

Glad you've have a chat to them @leopardprintlover88 . If 111 said a certain course of action then go. You're not making a wrong course of action by doing so.

OldFan · 07/09/2022 17:55

Feel better soon. x

Fingeronthebutton · 07/09/2022 17:59

Loachworks
same here. I suffer from diverticulitis. My ten is falling off the toilet and being sick as well as the other end.
The last thing I would be doing is posting on MN.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/09/2022 17:59

excellent that you have an appointment hope they get to the bottom of this, ad cure it!

leopardprintlover88 · 07/09/2022 18:01

@Loachworks It's strange isn't it. I actually like labour pain in a strange way I've had 2 with just gas and air at the end (I'm really not showing off I've never had a back to back labour I've heard they're horrendous)
I think the not knowing makes it worse for me as I focus on it? Constantly thinking what could be wrong with me and hyper focusing on if it's worse or not. Where as in labour I don't worry what's causing the pain as I have a pretty good idea! 😂

I went to a&e last week with awful persistent chest pain in the middle of the night. I was 99% sure it was heartburn but it just didn’t shift for hours. They were really good and the Dr (after a 4.5 hour wait), said he’d have come in too with chest pain of that nature. I’m on omaprazole as well, and took gaviscon to no avail.
hope they get to the bottom of your pain soon.

leopardprintlover88 · 07/09/2022 18:05

@MrsLargeEmbodied thank you x

Have you taken pain relief aside from ibuprofen (don't take that). Are you willing/able to get your ass to A&E? Are you vomiting?

leopardprintlover88 · 07/09/2022 18:07

@DWMoosmum Did you have pain in a similar place? x

TwoWeeksislong · 07/09/2022 18:07

That’s great you have an appointment for this evening. Hopefully they can figure it out and get you some treatment started and get the pain under control too.

leopardprintlover88 · 07/09/2022 18:08

@OldFan thank you ❤️ it's my daughters christening on Sunday so I really don't want to be unwell!! X

Have you done anything strenuous and perhaps pulled an ab. muscle? I did this a month ago while pulling my daft kitten off a porch roof from an upstairs window, where she had jumped out. Very bad pain that woke me in the night for about 4-5 days & sore during the day too. Only really got relief lying in the bath. Is it worse when you palpate the area or stretch or is the pain constant?

9thlife · 07/09/2022 18:10

I have pain this ( obv not medical) it’s serious reflux for me.
i take two diff meds from gp and then things like gaviscon/rennies when its really bad.
ofcourse I was checked out by gp first as the pain was so bad it hurt breathing.
