AIBU?

To ask why people vote Tory?

Tierne · 07/09/2022 14:25

It has to be said that life in the UK on low or middle income is much harder than it seemingly is in other western countries of similar wealth. I dont think the Tory party is making this country a nice place to live in at all. But they keep getting voted in.

So if you vote Tory:
Why do you vote for them?
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason?
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? For example making it impossible for people to get on the housing ladder, high rents and low tenant protections, no energy bill caps, etc?

NB: I dont want this to turn into a Tory bashing thread. I'd just like to hear how Tory supporters feel about their party.

Am I being unreasonable?

AIBU

You have one vote. All votes are anonymous.

I don't vote Tory.

I think some people do because they think the alternative is worse.

Because most people are conservative with a small “c”, and that broadly aligns with Conservative values / ideology.

I’m not a Conservative voter but you can’t argue with their electoral record in the last 100 years.

You could ask that about why anyone voted for anyone.

I don't vote Tory btw but in a democracy you're allowed your own view. plus who the fuck would you vote for?

Stupidity and/or selfishness

Never met a Tory that didn't fit neatly into those categories

Depends what the alternative is. I’d vote for the bucket man if the alternative was the SNP.

They are appalling and I can’t understand why anyone would cast a vote for them unless they are in a position of privilege that they’d like to keep propped up.

But there is NO effective opposition in this country. The other parties are all hopeless, divided, ineffective, obsessed with pushing a damaging brand of gender politics that rails against all common sense. So I imagine in such a situation, the status quo will continue to prevail.

Considering their track record with voters has been so good for so long, maybe the key to improving life in the UK isnt to try and piece together a new left out of the ruins of all our fragmented left wing parties. Maybe instead we have to understand what causes the majority to vote Tory, and then create a centre party like Macron's in France that responds to those needs while also being kinder to those who are struggling

OP I'm guessing your weren't around in the 70s when the country was crippled by the unions, winter of discontent etc. Do some research. Look at the Blair years and how much debt we are still paying off from then. People make much of "12 years of tory cuts" while forgetting that 5 years of that 12 were a lib dem coalition.
Did you even read Corbyns election manifesto? If you did you will know very well why tories won the last election. Do your research before you post then you avoid looking like a dickhead

Because we don’t have a credible centre party in this country. Nobody wants to vote for a party run by dinosaur trade unionists. I am not a Tory

People vote for all sorts of reasons and it certainly doesn't help to label people "stupid" for voting in a way which you disagree with.

Personally, the issue we have in the UK is an electoral system which is fundamentally unfit for purpose and so we end up with political parties having to take polarising positions in order to attract voters.

It's not quite as bad as it is in the US but it's not far off - basically elections are determined by a relatively low number of swing voters rather than the makeup of the HoC being truly representative.

I was about to post this. In my area the choice is pretty much SNP or a Conservative (who admittedly is a rather nice person who gets the issues in his constituency dealt with. But maybe there's a difference between Scottish Tories?) I usually vote for the Independent fella who stands little chance but I can see why the Tory gets his seat.

The LP have distanced themselves from ' dinosaur union leaders ' by not endorsing or going to the strike picket lines and Starmer sacked Sam Tarry for joining a picket line a few months ago.
I think their historic affiliation with the unions is very fractured now to be honest.
