Why?
Why not just give the job to - oh I don't know - a woman???

Why scrap it totally?

If a man can't have the job no one can?

Ffs.

Wow. There are people here who think that working regularly with young people doesn't require enhanced background checks.

And no @nutellachurro enhanced DBS checks are not just for regulated activities.

Why should it have gone to a woman?

Can only women read the new law and enforce said law in schools and other public buildings?

Because girls and vulnerable women are more comfortable talking to women about their periods than men. Because women have actual menstruation experience.

Why do you think this arrogant chancer should have got the job?

he says’ periods are an issue for everyone’. Wow, that is some unfortunate phraseology, right there

They are, though I wouldn't have used the word "issue" (which is a euphemism for problem) - I would have said that they should be considered by everyone. Which they should. Men should remember that many women suffer with really awful periods and cut them some slack. Not sure we need a man or indeed a woman to tell us that though.

You don't even need a regular DBS unless you're conducting regulated activities with children.

Some employers ask for one anyway to cover themselves, but it's not necessary.

And an enhanced DBS is just that, or do you think an enhanced DBS would be required in situations a regular DBS wouldn't be? (If so you don't seem to understand the concept of 'enhanced')

Indeed not.
I have one for example and my activities are not unregulated

£35,000 is more than most of the private sector workers in Tayside earn, you know the people that actually pay for the local council.

Sorry but I think local government in this country is an absolute fucking joke, on every conceivable level. It's basically legalised robbery of council tax payers, if it was run properly 99% of the people working there would no longer be working - and most of them would not last 5 minutes in the private sector where you actually have to be good at what you do.

in the private sector where you actually have to be good at what you do

I have worked extensively in the private sector. Sadly you appear to hold a somewhat idealistic belief here! There are shit employees in every sector; private, public and everything in between.

DBS doesn't apply here — it's not a thing in Scotland.

Really? How are adults vetted and children safeguarded?

@TooBigForMyBoots

And why do you think people will be talking to this person about their periods?

The job is to raise awareness of the period product act and the activities and initiatives being done to ensure this law is being followed

Unless you're one of those who have read the title and thinks he will be sitting in a circle of teenage girls having chats about cramps?

The bloke was an ex tobacco salesman, the job was barely advertised, the woman who got him his past 3 jobs was on the panel. It stank from the get go - welcome to Scotland, where it is all about who you know.

No one said you have to be doing regulated activities to get a DBS

It's that you don't have to have one unless you are

Goodness me

Please for the love of god read the job descriptions @nutellachurro . Please.

You are very much coming across as someone arguing for the sake of it.

The job description is pretty clear what the remit of this role will be

But no, you know better Biscuit

We have basic disclosure checks and PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) checks. Between them they cover similar ground.

It's just a bit irritating as a Scottish person when people continually use English-centric phrasing when the matter is clearly located in Scotland, and subject to Scottish law and processes. At least get the terminology right.

Can you highlight where in the JD it states you'll be talking to women and girls about their periods?

I'll wait

Because I've read the job description.😆 And I know that the front of any awareness programme needs to be relatable to the target audience.

Why do you think this ineffective, inexperienced tool was up to the job?

It really doesn't mean that. They train for years to be qualified, this dude is a personal fuckign trainer who knows about as much about the menopause as Dave down the pub.
Not even slightly the same thing

OK. See the difference.

But wasn’t the role focussed on making sure that legislation was implemented rather than on educating girls and women?

Report
nutellachurro · 06/09/2022 15:24

@TheDailyCarbunkle

You're the one who said I should check the JD

I have, and there is no mention of chatting to people about their periods as you claim

If you're accusing me of not reading it, it would be easy for you to copy and paste the relevant section you're referring to?

I wonder why you can't do that...

Report
IrisAtwood · 06/09/2022 15:26

OK. Just saw @TooBigForMyBoots post. If the job was raising awareness among girls and women and didn’t involve being educated and trained then it makes sense to appoint a woman.

Another post where the ignorant will bleat on about incorrect assumptions as to the remit of this role.

YABU op

I look forward to hearing more about what a male, er, personal trainer can bring to the role of "period dignity officer".

@TooBigForMyBoots

I didn't hire the guy so no idea

But to claim a woman has to be the one doing such a basic projects and compliance role is a bit silly

People have clung onto the 'period dignity' in the title and started their frothing without understanding the job itself.

I personally feel this would have been different had the job title been 'period product act enforcement/awareness officer' or something more aligned to the actual JD.

Report
Thelnebriati · 06/09/2022 15:27

LOL, you say they are discussing the period act? With a load of period products on the table? Is that how we discuss the law now, with a load of props?
