To think we're about to witness a repeat of Labour's wrong Miliband brother moment?

How Liz will won above Rishi is beyond me. I mean, I know they're both Tories and we are where we are but her interview with Laura K on Sunday really worried me.

I feel like the country is on a knife edge waiting to see what she will announce and I'm 99% sure it just won't be enough and it will start a chain of events that will make for such a difficult time for this country.

I do think it would be stopped if Rishi were PM or at least kerbed but I feel that the Tory party are about to make the wrong decision with who they chose and with it will bring dire consequences for the country.

I would think it would make them unelectable but if they've selected an ERG PM then who knows any more? Maybe I'm just a cynic but I'm so concerned about the next few weeks and months.

@Festoonlights why would it be a joke?
Sturgeon has seen off 3 prime ministers in her tenure as first minister.
As leader of her party she has won parliamentary elections in scotland in 2016 & 2022
She has seen off
• 3 conservative leaders in scotland
• 4 Labour Party leaders in scotland
• 3 Lib Dem party leaders in scotland

As leader of her party a majority of snp politicians were returned in westminster elections in 2015, 2017 & 2019

As leader of her party a recent poll showed that in next westminster election her party will take all but one westminster seat

She is the only party leader with a positive approval rating in the UK currently according to recent Yougov poll.

We have free at point of use university education for our young people
We have free at point of use transport for young people
We have free at point of use prescriptions

Are things perfect ? No. No county is post covid and especially post brexit.

But she's a strong leader & I'm bloody pleased to have her.

That's some deep internalised sexism & misogyny you've got going on there. Criticise policies or ideology if you can, but quoting the critical "nickname" of a male daily Mail journo makes you look awfy stupid pet.

I'm afraid anyone who supports separatism is on pretty thin ice calling out anyone for "looking awfy stupid" . I can't think of a better example of a demonstrable lack of critical thinking.

Sturgeon's performance at the last Climate Change Conference was an embarrassment- shoe horning her way into selfies with everyone she could- despite having no actual standing or remit, or the other person even knowing who she is. Then there was her recent vainglorious trip to Copenhagen whilst Edinburgh was turning into a rubbish tip.

The nickname has nothing to do with her being a woman, so sorry you can shout "internalised sexism and misogyny" as much as you like. I'm sure a similar name would have been found for a male SNP leader that vain and shallow.

verdantverdure · 05/09/2022 19:15

@KenAdams We already had that when the Conservative party chose that walking seven deadly sins over Rory Stewart.

Separatism - you have got to be joking?!!

When we are at the moment stuck in an unequal union with little England.

Off you pop pet.

I'm sorry that living in a democracy upsets you so much.

Sorry, what? Your comment makes no sense at all.

(Especially when one considers the fact that the most people didn't vote for the Tories, of course...)

I find it is a waste of time trying to engage with people when that is the language they use.

What language? Is it pop or pet you object to?

basilmint · 05/09/2022 21:21

Do you honestly think Sunak would win the election? Nope. Boris will be back to do that.

The party members may think Boris was unfairly ousted and Liz is just keeping his seat warm until he rides back in on a blaze of glory but most of the rest of the electorate was long sick of him.

I didn't say the two countries don't sometimes work together, but France/Macron have caused a hell of a lot of problems for us in the last few years. I am not a fan, even though I like the French - of Macron, he is a weasly, dishonest man that should send less time with his bodyguard and more time learning diplomacy.

Such as?

If you mean since 2016? we caused Brexit, not France and leaving a "club" has consequences.

France and UK don't sometimes work together, they work together a heck of a lot.

But a nice side step from your original assertion that we are almost enemies & have been for centuries.

Alexandra2001 · 05/09/2022 21:39

@beachcitygirl Yes Sturgeon is probably the best politician/party leader in the UK, she has been for a quite a while.

DdraigGoch · 05/09/2022 21:42

donquixotedelamancha · 05/09/2022 07:01

By what metric is Truss essentially a fascist?

PP is using fascist to mean 'someone I disagree with'.

I don't like Truss but it's utterly moronic to say she's a fascist.

Some people use "fascist" to refer to pretty much anyone to the right of Marx.

Their hyperbole discredits even any sensible views they have.

ShirleyJackson · 05/09/2022 21:48

Sums it up.

To think we're about to witness a repeat of Labour's wrong Miliband brother moment?
vera99 · 05/09/2022 21:57

Fascist Mussolini got the trains running on time - she's no fascist merely a smear on the surface of time seen through a cracked dirty glass.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/09/2022 23:18

Talk about damning with faint praise.

I usually object to bandying around words like fascist but this definition from the Merriam Webster is interesting:

a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.

Truss is doing a darn good impression.

Just requoting my own post for the people who question the use of the word fascist. It's looking more and more like it by this definition.

carefullycourageous · 06/09/2022 00:16

I agree that we are getting very close to fascism @Zonder with attacks on rights, justice, protest, trades unions, voting. I'm scared about where we are headed and I'm starting to wonder if it is time to leave England.

You can requote it as often as you like. Doesn't make its application any less subjective.

The biggest criticism of conservativism that gets made is how it supports individualism rather than putting society first. That is completely at odds with your claim.

Boris was often called a "fascist" by some Mumsnetters, yet the same Mumsnetters were furious at how liberal his covid policy was.

If only they did!! is trying to licence/test/tax bicycles "supporting the individual" or an attack on individualism?

The people they put first are their own ilk, no one else.

What was liberal about his CV policy? unless you mean the CV policy he applied to himself....

The UK is a long way from being a fascist state but the attacks on the legal system, removal of rights, voter ID, boundary changes favouring the incumbent party, attacks on certain groups of workers, running down public services & corruption... none of its good.

What problems have France caused?

Have you seen how far up Putin's arse Macron has been? Managed to piss off most of NATO.

I read that article, in what way has Macron "pissed most of NATO" or caused problems for the UK?

Politico is not exactly an unbiased source for opinion pieces either, editorially strongly supports the Republican party.

Ultimately, there will be a negotiated settlement in Ukraine, neither side will win militarily and even if Putin goes, the next Russian President will not be pro west.

Macron has kept lines of communication open, whilst also supplying Ukraine with weapons.

It's a load of hot air from Shapps that everyone knows has no chance of actually happening. He's trying to distract from his mismanagement of the railways.

What was liberal about his CV policy?

It was more liberal than most of Mumsnet would have liked. Thread upon thread berating people for going out to buy milk. Mumsnetters would have loved the Spanish rules where you needed a written form to leave your house. They wanted a New Zealand approach of sealing the entire country from the rest of the world, ignoring that the UK is closely connected to its neighbours. Every lockdown came too late, every unlocking too early, and any rules weren't strict enough for many on this forum.

If thats true, its very bad, his "hot air" is enabling car drivers to drive even more badly around cyclists..

Schapps was playing to the Daily Mail crowd but that has consequences for real people and as a cabinet minister, he doesn't act alone.

Yes BJ should have acted more responsibly over CV, you remember Cheltenham, Rugby, Football, boasting of shaking hands etc etc and then he delayed and shamefully released infected patients into care homes oh and then poured away billions on trace, PPE & business loans.

I don't see that as Liberal, i see it as incompetent & Truss was part of all of this.

The irony of flinging around accusations of internalised misogyny and calling me "pet"

"Separatism" is a perfectly legitimate and common term used to describe the aim of separatist parties, whether in Scotland, Spain or Canada.
