To think we're about to witness a repeat of Labour's wrong Miliband brother moment?

How Liz will won above Rishi is beyond me. I mean, I know they're both Tories and we are where we are but her interview with Laura K on Sunday really worried me.

I feel like the country is on a knife edge waiting to see what she will announce and I'm 99% sure it just won't be enough and it will start a chain of events that will make for such a difficult time for this country.

I do think it would be stopped if Rishi were PM or at least kerbed but I feel that the Tory party are about to make the wrong decision with who they chose and with it will bring dire consequences for the country.

I would think it would make them unelectable but if they've selected an ERG PM then who knows any more? Maybe I'm just a cynic but I'm so concerned about the next few weeks and months.

Why would anyone want Rishi as PM? He partly responsible for the problems of inflation by printing huge amounts of money during the pandemic. His solution is to massively increase NI on the few workers left to pay for this largesse. Not very Conservative. I'm not a big fan of Truss but she is the better of the two by far in my opinion.

How do you imagine she is going to pay for all she has promised as well as reduce taxes, N Insurance and all the rest? By creating money. Al least Mr Sumak was honest about not being able to reduce taxes.
In the end, despite all that has been said about her winning, she didnt win by much. And I'm guessing she won't last long, given that many consider that she can't win an election.

I think you are over egging Sturgeon here but at least we have a way out of this mess!

Oh ha ha, yes we're so lucky having Elsie McSelfie. That's a good one- I mean your comment is a joke ?

Festoonlights · 05/09/2022 15:39

Well there are options to pay for some of the support through a voluntary or compulsory windfall tax, she can scrap green tax and other options like the recent social care tax etc she can also insist that the forecourts pass on savings to the customers which they are not doing at the moment.
Ultimately what choice does she have? We can't just let Russia sink the economy via energy pressure. I think the tax cuts are likely to be (very) modest, and efforts will be redirected to keep the energy prices capped (I hope) and prices down.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/09/2022 15:42

You need history lessons just saying, but in any event Macron has form for offending world leaders, and is in fact very anti British atm, the French people however are great friends and will be friends long after he has croaked it on the world stage

Ha ha, got an A in history A level, before A* were a thing..

What level of lessons do l need?

vera99 · 05/09/2022 15:44

@Festoonlights Nurse ! 😉

Festoonlights · 05/09/2022 15:46

I have no idea what you are talking about vera are you feeling okay hun?

Festoonlights · 05/09/2022 15:47

If you were actually educated you would know the history/tension between France and the UK has stretched back for centuries! So.......not sure exactly what you are on about.

@Festoonlights

I actually used to lecture in a section of history😂

l should have said, in recent history. Since WW1.

l know obviously our history with France goes back further than that🙄

Festoonlights · 05/09/2022 15:57

Well that was a pretty big mistake to make given you are a history lecturer. I feel sorry for your students Confused when you miss out such important details.

You have a weird subservient attitude towards the french, it is a little unnerving.

😂😂😂l actually used to get amazing results. But you know much better than me, obviously😂

Just because l forgot to use the word ‘contemporary’ on an Internet forum chatting to people l don’t know and don’t care about.

l don’t give a shit what you think🙄😂

Unfortunately she didn't get to vote, so abit pointless really to be demanding.

She’s got one in the next general election where it really counts for something.

Two years away! A lot can and will happen in two years....just saying.

I want a lot of things, doesn't mean they are going to happen!

Blossomtoes · 05/09/2022 16:43

If we have to wait two years for an election I’ll eat my handbag. I reckon six months is generous given how divided the Tory parliamentary party is.

itsgettingweird · 05/09/2022 16:47

TheKeatingFive · 05/09/2022 08:44

The party, as a whole did not agree with the removal of Boris Johnson. Full stop.

Yeah, I'm not sure that's properly understood. The party members didn't want the election in the first place.

And it says it all - doesn't it - when party members wanted to keep a lying Bauchi on in power.

The government work for us. Do they honestly believe that's what we deserve?

Johnson?

What's actually worrying is that Truss was the best of the rest.

Speaks volumes for the lack of depth within the party full stop.

I'm embarrassed for them that Truss was the best if they rest. And I'm worried for us.

UnnecessaryFennel · 05/09/2022 10:59

I can't believe we have posters on this thread still attempting to blame Labour for the 2008 global financial crisis and still bringing up 'that letter'.

It is utterly embarrasing that our political discourse has been so debased. Really, you have nothing more than lying about the events of 14 years ago and parroting Daily Mail headlines?

Labour are far from perfect, but my god, the idea that actual functioning adults believe they would be 'worse' than the current shower of venal incompetents is mind-blowing.

I'm sorry that living in a democracy upsets you so much.

Blossomtoes · 05/09/2022 16:59

I'm sorry that living in a democracy upsets you so much.

Unfortunately we don’t. Far more people voted for parties that aren’t Tory in the last election. First past the post isn’t democratic.

LittleFluffyCloudz · 05/09/2022 16:54

God forbid that people's views are actually taken into account! I agree fluffy
Referendums are only useful if they produce the right answer
Elections are only useful if they produce Jeremy Corbyn Confused

These people are not interested and have never been interested in true democracy.

WonkotheWonderDog · 05/09/2022 17:07

@Blossomtoes
I wouldn't shout that too loudly if I were you.

In 2005 Labour (Tony Blair) won a GE with 35.2% of the votes.

This result, that represents one voter in four, makes the Labour Party the weakest elected political party in British history. In 1974, Labour Harold Wilson, who won the general election with fewer votes than the Conservatives, did however win 37.2% of the vote. With 35.2% Labour had regressed mainly due to the low participation rate which lay at its 1980's and even pre-Second World War level.

Well, you clearly don't know anything about the more recent history between France and the UK do you?

French destroyers protecting the QE carrier, French and UK troops in Afghanistan, & very recently, French troops, supported by British aircraft in the Sahel, fighting ISIS backed insurgents.... but to be fair to you, neither does the Foreign Secretary either...

Don’t be ridiculous. FPTP isn’t democratic, regardless of the result. My vote’s worthless, like everyone else who lives in a stronghold, be it red or blue. Disenfranchising huge numbers of voters isn’t democracy, however much you might want to pretend it is.

I didn't say the two countries don't sometimes work together, but France/Macron have caused a hell of a lot of problems for us in the last few years. I am not a fan, even though I like the French - of Macron, he is a weasly, dishonest man that should send less time with his bodyguard and more time learning diplomacy.

antelopevalley · 05/09/2022 17:41

French Prime Ministers put their country first just as Prime Ministers of other countries do. Why should Macron put Britain first?
