The Ukrainian First Lady has made a statement addressing the UK telling us while we are counting our pennies they are also counting their casualties.
Aibu to feel selfish moaning about my lifestyle reductions?

So new to Mn then?

Konfetka · 03/09/2022 17:56

Crocodile tears:

Ethnic Russians in Ukraine were being persecuted; ethnic Russians in Kazakhstan are not.

OhmygodDont · 03/09/2022 17:56

Many British families may also be counting the casualties this winter of their own elderly and those with other continued or little who suffer from those pennies being counted. We may not be being bombed but starving to death or freezing to death isn’t a nice alternative either.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 03/09/2022 17:58

I can understand that she is frustrated though the statement seems a bit harsh considering how Europe has pulled together.

Without the support the war would have been over long ago.

Granted people aren't been killed by Russian forces on the streets but it has had an impact.

I don't know how we will get through the winter, it's a short hop skip to Christmas too, I need to fill up my oil tank, not sure how yet while electricity and food prices have skyrocketed.

My friend is closing her business as tourists couldn't visit tbe area as hotels were full accommodating refugees it has killed her store.

I'm trying not to be negative as it is Putin's decision that caused the crisis.

Starving to death?

RedToothBrush · 03/09/2022 18:00

I have a feeling that it will go down like a lead balloon in certain quarters.

The cost of living is so high people are likely to end up dying here. So it just comes across as tone deaf coming from someone who isn't going to struggle for food and is on magazine covers.

The same thing said by a Ukrainian fighting on the front lines for his family, stressing that his family are also struggling for food and heat might go down somewhat better...

Starving to death?

Those that can’t afford the cost of longing increases. Those that have already need using food banks before the costs have increased meaning less and less people donate. The whole food vs heating. Some people won’t even get that choice it will be no heating and minimal to no food.

Why do push these doomsday scenarios? It helps no one

VirginiaWool · 03/09/2022 18:13

If her billionaire husband hadn't set his sights at NATO, chances are Putin would have continued to treat him as just another oligarch and none of this would have happened. Do you think she's feeling a bit guilty and trying to deflect?

QuentininQuarantino · 03/09/2022 18:16

MissPankhurst · 03/09/2022 17:19

Well, it's complicated isn't it.
Ukraine had agreed not to apply to the UN if Russia let them be.
That all seemed to working than he decided he would like to join the UN and the war began. Many Ukrainians see themselves as part of Russia. Eastern Europe is very, very complicated.
I think he is enjoying strutting about in his green tee shirts-all perfectly pressed-presenting himself as David against Goliath or some sort of cut price Che Guvara but never near the actual theatre of war.
It's their country-they want to go to war that's great.
Other countries want to support them, great too.
What's not great is to have his wife-with whom he posed in Vogue while war goes on-pout away on a gold chair telling us tough shit about Europe's and the UK's rising bills.

She is out of order and no matter how many people want to apologise for her-some even suggesting that our PM made her say it, that remains a fact.
At the end of this, she will still be a multi millionaire and I will be fucking broke. i think that's worth a thank you not a so fucking what from her.

At the end of this she might not be here.

she was “target number two” and her husband “target number one.” There have been actual foiled assassination attempts. That gold chair is not one you would like to sit in.

Tierne · 03/09/2022 17:48

@CheapBeersFilledwithCrocodileTears
You say "when Ukraine falls". Do you really think that's the inevitable conclusion to this?

@Tierne I never thought the UK and the US would let it get this far. When they let Crimea happen, it was the death knell, and that was years ago. Maybe things can still be turned around, but it’s not great. I’d say the fall of Ukraine is 75/25 assured at this point, yes. I mean, I don’t exactly know anyone who’s sinking their life savings into investing in Latvia at the moment. In fact, if there were any dual citizens left in Latvia and Lithuania, or any rich citizens who still had the ability to leave long term, get other National passports, etc… they’ve done it now, or they’re doing it quickly.

BuenoSucia · 03/09/2022 18:17

Hang on… are you saying nations SHOULDNT aim to join NATO? But instead should be pushed around by a tinpot dictator so it doesn’t upset the apple cart?

there’s doing the right thing and there’s doing the easy thing. They rarely go hand in hand.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 03/09/2022 18:18

"I understand the situation is very tough. But let me recall that at the time of the Covid-19 epidemic, and it's still with us, when there were price hikes, Ukraine was affected as well.

"The prices are going up in Ukraine as well. But in addition our people get killed.

I have to agree OP that you started a thread with bad intentions by deliberately taking the quote out of context.

I hear her and I'll put an extra duvet on the bed.

The cynic in me says our own government has set this up to shut up the whinging peasants.

Yes. It’s ‘whataboutery’. We mustn’t complain because worse happens elsewhere. No, the suffering in other countries shouldn’t detract from our own problems. Johnson said the same thing recently. It’s another attempt to deflect from the failures of this government.

LaQuern · 03/09/2022 18:21

Nah she can fuck off.

Yes they're at war and undoubtedly that's horrific, but so many people and businesses are going to go under this winter that I can't see our situation as just a minor inconvenience
