The Ukrainian First Lady has made a statement addressing the UK telling us while we are counting our pennies they are also counting their casualties.
Aibu to feel selfish moaning about my lifestyle reductions?

Can totally imagine Boris saying to Zelensky “no one appreciates me, everyone is saying Boris broke britain, would you mind getting your lovely wife to tell everyone not to be so moany.”

Not everything can be blamed on Boris et al.
It is becoming ridiculous when people try to defend this ignorant, thankless woman by saying Boris Made Her say it!

For fucks sake.

Saucery · 03/09/2022 16:49

It was in reference to the Russian involvement in pushing up prices, to be fair. Undoubtedly spin, of sorts, but not without context.

Rich coming from her with her publicity tours and Vogue spreads

Oh ffs. Don’t say shite like this until you’ve actually looked into the statement, which isn’t a statement at all, but a response to an interview question. And of course, doesn’t help that OP hasn’t actually shared the true quote, accidentally or intentionally.

The First Lady of Ukraine was asked a DIRECT question in a BBC interview she was already doing. Here is the entire truth:

In a wide-ranging interview to be broadcast on Sunday 4 September, Mrs Zelenska was asked what message she had for British people who are facing soaring energy bills in part due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the impact that has had on global gas and oil prices.

"I understand the situation is very tough. But let me recall that at the time of the Covid-19 epidemic, and it's still with us, when there were price hikes, Ukraine was affected as well.
"The prices are going up in Ukraine as well. But in addition our people get killed.
"So when you start counting pennies on your bank account or in your pocket, we do the same and count our casualties," she said.

Sounds to me like she was trying to establish common ground, she knows it’s shite for everyone, and by saying “we do the same” which everyone has so conveniently cut out and started chastising her for singling out the UK (she was asked the question!!!) or doing bloody Vogue spreads (she’s supposed to draw attention to their country - this bloody BBC interview is yet another way!). Sigh.

Ridiculous to have to read this shite from sharing half-quotes and not even why she said it, as if she just released some anti-UK statement. Read the REST of the quotes; she’s trying to encourage people to stay strong against all the shite Russia will pull, and causing raising energy prices is the beginning.

Well, she’s had a crappy year and is probably a bit stressed. She’s trying to create headlines to raise awareness to keep weapons flowing to her dying friends and family.

I feel like maybe we don’t nitpick, eh.

Ukraine is hardly the first country to be invaded, and it won't be the last.

What has this person, who has been elected by nobody, sacrificed to help victims of war elsewhere in the world?

AbsentinSpring · 03/09/2022 16:50

The full interview will be aired tomorrow.

The cynic in me says our own government has set this up to shut up the whinging peasants.

and you win the tin foil hat award for conspiracy theory of the month!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

MissPankhurst · 03/09/2022 16:53

Russia is not supplying Europe because Europe is supporting her husband's war.

If Europe said they were not becoming involved in a war between two Eastern European Warlord's dispute, we wouldn't have these crazy prices with Germany and France already planning their blackouts.

Therefore, a Thank You would not go amiss, not a shrug of the shoulders , accompanied by "so what" while sitting perfectly coiffed on a gold chair.

FAQs · 03/09/2022 16:53

To be fair depends how it was asked. This could be interpreted as it’s Ukraines fault, when they are in a devastated situation it probably wasn’t the best question to ask !

VirginiaWool · 03/09/2022 16:53

Well unlike her I can't count my gold bullion and houses in Mayfair so I'm going to have to stick with pennies for now.

Fallonangel · 03/09/2022 16:54

It was my mistake not to add the whole context.
It was not intentional.
My point remains.... She could have added a thankyou.

Agree with@Saucery the interview question was set up in a way that tied the Ukraine crisis to the cost of living crisis in the UK. They are both related yes but one is not the cause of the other. I think she was put on the defensive

Agree re defensive, it was an incredibly tone deaf question.

I'm afraid that's bollocks and will be clearly bollocks to anyone who goes to the BBC webpage and watches it. Her expression matched her words-up yours. suckers! Where is all this "pennies" coming from.
My fucking bill will be going up thousands, not to mention everything else and extra childcare for when the kids are sent home from school one day a week.
It might be pennies to her but it's not fucking pennies to me.

Namenic · 03/09/2022 17:02

It is a lot worse for people in ukraine - so I get where she is coming from. I would not want to be in either hers or her husband or kids’ shoes - they are probably marked out (by Putin)…. I’m not sure the economy is going great in ukraine either - plus they have to worry about war, nuclear fallout from power plants, relatives dying or far away.

Might start a conversation she'll regret.

Warszawa · 03/09/2022 17:05

As always though the vast majority of people count thier pennies whilst a small minority live in obscene luxury.

if the pain was fairly shared then yeah great - but it isn't and we shouldn't accept it just because someone else has it worse.

if the strike action should teach us anything the question should be " why are you striking, i haven't had a pay rise either"

it should be " why aren't I striking, I haven't had a pay rise either"

the U.K. response to the Ukrainian situation has actually been the only good thing this government has done imo

itsgettingweird · 03/09/2022 17:06

Thankyou to the person to linked the whole speech and in context.

Laura K has asked some fucking stupid questions the past few years but that one really did set the First Lady up to have to be defensive.

She was asked what she'd say to the people of Britain suffering as a direct result of their country being invaded - basically.

As if it's their fault they were invaded and we suffer.

We are suffering because we stand by them. But not because of them.

Tierne · 03/09/2022 17:07

@CheapBeersFilledwithCrocodileTears

Even with the full context it doesnt look great. People across Europe are going to be starving this winter as a result of supporting her country. They dont need patronising by a millionaire.

SpindleInTheWind · 03/09/2022 17:08

generally the British aren’t cunts

Yup

Which is why it hurts to see them exploited or manipulated, and my jury's out on this for a while because I don't trust Laura Kuenssberg an inch

Not exactly "her husbands war" now is it?! He didn't invade another sovereign nation, should he have just rolled over and said "No worries Mr Putin, take whatever you like."?

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2022 17:09

It's a short snippet of a longer interview. You may well discover that she does thank the UK for its support. Zelensky hadn't held back in thanking Johnson personally and the country.

To be honest if women & children of my country were being raped, bombed and homeless I'd probably focus on that too.

LampLighter414 · 03/09/2022 17:10

Competitive misery.

Life is much easier if you don’t pay attention to news and just get on with your own.

You are okay to feel down or worried about the cost of living. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

ClemmyTine · 03/09/2022 17:11

Boris told her to say it. I bet.

SpindleInTheWind · 03/09/2022 17:12

Whatever we do we must not let the likes of Laura Kuenssberg at the BBC get her kicks out of setting up competetive misery. Agree with @LampLighter414

Mossygreenchypre · 03/09/2022 17:14

I've watched as much of the interview as the BBC is showing until its full broadcast tomorrow.
All she has done is answer specific questions that were asked by a UK BBC journalist about the UK for an interview that is to be broadcast in the UK by a UK owned broadcasting company.
She ain't gonna talk about France is she.
I don't feel she was singling out the UK at all.
