To think sister is starving herself?

ScaryBiscuitz · 02/09/2022 15:53

Sister is living off a bowl of Shreddies and one small meal a day. The Shreddies is her lunch. Small meal for dinner.

She’s lost a lot of weight and was not overweight to start with. WIBU to tell her she’s basically starving herself?

10st at 5ft 10 is not very slim. 10st at 5ft 2 would be very over weight.
You could mention your concerns but she doesn't sound like she is under eating.

Losing a stone in 5 to 6 weeks combined with exercise is a healthy weight loss.

WTF? She's eating 700 calories a day! You also don't have to be 'very slim' to have an eating disorder. 10 stone at her height is at the lower end of the BMI range and it won't take long to slip into underweight territory at her current rate of weight loss.

Bullshit. Give your head a wobble. 10 stone at 5ft 10? It's very slim probably skinny at that height in fact.

Some people clearly have eating disorders themselves it's shocking.

Fast 800 is medically fine, but you should count your micro nutrition and take supplements. I'd ask her if that's the plan that she is doing and go down the proper advice route. Is she wanting fast weight loss for an event? Otherwise at her weight she'd be better off eating and doing weights.

I’m 10st and 5’3 and I can assure you I am not very overweight 🤣

This is why weight is an impossible
subject on here.

Without seeing someone in person it’s impossible to tell.

It could be a fad diet or it could be an eating disorder, dizzy spells of course don’t sound good.

Ponoka7 · 03/09/2022 13:05

Also, a stone a month is fine. I and many others who struggle with slow weight loss do Michael Mosley fast 800 etc.

Fast800 is also absolutely not recommended if you have a history of disordered eating.

Who says that the OPs sister has disordered eating? My eating, like many others was disordered, that's how I became obese. I like many others found fast plans work for us. I couldn't do the 1-2 lb a week weight loss for enough time to get to a healthy weight. MN hates obesity, but also the diet plans needed to stop being obese.

YingMei · 03/09/2022 13:12

Op, your sister is clearly suffering from some kind of ED as she is massively restricting herself and being repetitive in what she will eat. At 5ft 10 that is clearly not enough food and anyone on here telling you it is is deluded.
I have a history of EDs and I would eat a bit like that - I got very very underweight in the end.
You are right to be concerned, but saying it outright wouldn't help at the moment. I would monitor and suggest a doctor if you think it's getting further out of hand and she's not meeting her nutritional needs.

EugeneLevysEyebrow · 03/09/2022 13:14

Oh @Fallonangel mumsnet doesn’t disappoint! After seeing OPs update I wondered how long before someone comes along to confidently tell us that actually OPs sister isn’t particularly slim and there’s nothing to worry about.

Because feeling lightheaded when you stand up is soooo normal…

10stone at 5ft 10 is a BMI of 20. Does that not count as very slim? And 10 stone at 5ft 2 is 5lb outside the normal weight range. BMI of 25.7. Not “very overweight” at all.

Fallonangel · 03/09/2022 13:16

I'm 5ft 2 and at 10stone I am heading towards obese. And I look terrible.
At 8st 2 I am slim. I know many people at 5ft 10 at 9stone who are slim and healthy.

As long as your Sister is not nutrient deficient her current loss should not be of concern. She may need extra veg/protein. Not fatty carbs etc.

Josette77 · 03/09/2022 14:07

She is starving herself. She is on the thin side already and starving herself.
People are so messed up on this thread.

MissingNashville · 03/09/2022 14:13

Your updates are worrying OP. It’s not a normal way to eat. She was a healthy weight to start with and has only got to the lower end of a healthy weight for her height by eating 800 calories or less a day, has gone from active and fit to dizzy when standing and unable to complete a gym workout, she’s anaemic and despite all this is continuing this diet. This ‘shreddies’ diet and the fact she’s always on some sort of diet is disordered eating.

Anyone here saying it is ok is deluded. If she ate more calories, exercised, wasn’t deficient in anything and maintained this weight, that’s fine. That’s not the case here.

miserablecat · 03/09/2022 14:15

Surely the point was that OPs sister (if I have read correctly) wasnt obese, or even overweight to start with. And has lost a significant amount of weight in a short time, by eating a fairly small number of calories per day. And has low iron and feels dizzy and lightheaded.
Quite surprised how many people are happy to defend this as normal/acceptable.
Has anyone trotted out "we've lost sight of what a healthy weight is" yet...? Hmm

Astounding · 03/09/2022 14:24

Its about far more than this. OPs sister is eating a few select foods, weighing them out meticulously and then strictly counting the calories of her one meal so it doesn’t exceed 500 calories. If she did not have an eating disorder and needed to lose a stone or two and was doing this for a month and had a plan for after that then fine, As it is this is not the case. OPs sister is feeling unwell, has very low ferritin, couldn’t complete the exercise routine she wanted due to lack of energy and is losing weight quickly. Not at all good and very worrying.

ArabellaRockerfella · 03/09/2022 15:35

OP
Dizziness, low Ferritin and lack of energy (which she previously had) are more pieces to the puzzle which to me show a picture of an Eating Disorder. It's not just the eating it's all the factors and her response which clearly highlight this. When my daughter was very ill her blood pressure and heart rate dropped seriously low, she would have been hospitalised if there had been a bed on a unit. She had to be on bed rest for a while. When someone is restricting their diet they are also restricting vitamins and nutrients that are essential for muscle and brain function. The heart being the most vital muscle. The thing that kills anorexics most commonly is sudden catastrophic heart failure. This can happen quite rapidly. I had no idea she was so bad because she hid it so well and was appearing to function normally.
Please look at BEAT website or call their helpline for advice and get your sister some help please. Best of luck xx
