Do you care that Liz Truss had an affair?

On the one hand, I feel that it's her own business, but on the other, I want a PM I can look up to, who I can trust, who has dignity. After Boris, after his endless lies, Truss doesn't inspire the integrity that I want to see in my country's leader. AIBU?

Ukraine - they both Libs/labour hate militarisation - Libdems are committed to abolishing trident - labour the same if the left regain control - but who will defend Britain/Europe when Russia try to seize Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova etc etc - they ignored the whole Ukraine issue as they did on Brexit vote outcome - now one of their own, Lord Sugar on Twitter raises the question of debating rejoining the EU - we had the vote, the majority voted to leave!

Lol!
It was Labour that ordered the latest 2 aircraft carriers and under Blair, we had nothing like the defence cuts that Cameron and Johnson (supported by Truss) have imposed.

Even Corbyn said he'd keep Trident.

So perhaps being economical with the truth isn't kept just for the affairs?

Verbena87 · 02/09/2022 19:40

@CanThisBe in my case I am equally unimpressed with Boris’ alleged intelligence. But yeah, the misogyny is unsurprising but disappointing.

MarshaMelrose · 02/09/2022 19:47

Even Corbyn said he'd keep Trident.

Maybe but from The Guardian...

In an interview with the BBC’s Andrew Neil, Corbyn said he respected the party’s decision to commit to the weapons system, but there would be a defence review to “look at the role of nuclear weapons” if Labour wins power.

So maybe not.

Thats what all defence reviews do "Review the options"

Dress it up as you like, the UK wont be ditching Nukes whoever wins the next election.

But lets consider that Truss supported huge cuts in Army Navy and RAF personal and equipment... and supported not selling Ukraine even one bullet until late October 2021, just 4 months before Putin invaded.

But UK defence is safe in Tory hands... bit like the NHS and the Police .... not.

MarshaMelrose · 02/09/2022 20:00

Dressing up? 🤷

I actually admired Corbyn for being honest about his stance on nuclear disarmament. Not that I agreed with him but that he didn't fake an opinion or hide what he thought. Good for him.

Having said that, when a pm doesn't want trident, it's more likely to go than when when a pm does.
That's just common sense.

Ah didums @Anothernamechangeplease Liz Truss is going to be a GREAT PM able to side-step Sir Beer Starmer and his shenanigans and Make Britain 🇬🇧 Great Again!!!

What a bizarrely juvenile post. Are you from the teenage wing of the Tory party or something?

Blossomtoes · 02/09/2022 20:25

And women are criticising the fact that she's not as young looking as other celebrity women her age?

Nobody mentioned celebrity or her looks, that was your interpretation of what was said. I find it astonishing that she’s young enough to be my daughter because of her attitudes and because the contrast with my son of exactly the same age and his female friends couldn’t be starker. I’m used to women of that age being open minded feminists, it amazes me that her mind is so closed and so old.

LexMitior · 02/09/2022 20:29

To be fair, it has taken 13 pages for someone to point out that Liz Truss is not stupid, went to Oxford from a comp.

On the other hand, there's been lots of comment on her affairs and her looks for her age. From women. We really are our worst enemies and not a few misogynists here too.

mathanxiety · 02/09/2022 20:40

@LexMitior she's getting exactly the same pasting Boris Johnson gets here, for the same reasons.

Just because she's a woman who was ambitious enough and intelligent enough to get into and through Oxford doesn't mean she has any claim on women's admiration or loyalty.

Then why does she come across as so unintelligent?

Clearly bright, Roundhay comp, Leeds, let children down and focused on Social issues according to Truss, thankfully she went to a Canadian school for a year, which turned her life around (otherwise she'd have ended up a teen mum on smack...) before then going to Oxford.

She slags off the UK school that she attended for 5 years & praises the Canadian one she went too for a year, so no wonder she joined the Liberals after experiencing such poor education under a Tory Govt.

illicitinkling · 02/09/2022 20:52

The Ukrainians didn’t have a choice but they’d sure like to have nuclear weapons now - let’s hope that two-ing and Fro-ing left wing labour politicians aren’t believed in their falsehoods about defence - we in Britain could easily be the next Ukraine if labour throw the Americans out - who will fight to defend British freedoms and stop putin’s soldiers raping our women and girls … Jeremy Corbyn? Keir Starmer? David Lammy? Appeasement of a dictator maybe but they would probably resign and leave it to the sons and daughters to defend our British islands!! #NeverLabour

That's good news for us, though, isn't it? It means she'll be ever more keen to improve Britsh education.

LexMitior · 02/09/2022 20:54

If she is so stupid, then she is in a rarified category of Oxford educated stupid which is looking stupid but acting otherwise in private. She is hitting the right level of political discourse. That's got her votes, and didn't matter whether the voters were clever.

She is a shrewd woman. She has worked there are more votes in tabloid thinking than there being a broadsheet person. Tabloid gets votes. Her colleagues like that too, and that is why she will be leader, not Sunak.

I think its pretty shitty to rubbish the school that you attended very successfully for 5 years.

As for improving standards? why would she do that? she has had her state education & has been in Govt for the majority of the last 12 years... what has done about the dire state of some of our schools?

The problem with Corbyn and Trident is he said he wouldn't push the button before later saying he'd only do so in consultation with others.

Except the PM has to be the one to give the Letters order. And they have to decide that....alone by themselves.

Unsurprisingly, plenty of people weren't comfortable about Corbyn being in charge of national security after that.

Alexandra2001 · 02/09/2022 21:05

@LexMitior Had Boris been on the ballot sheet, Truss wouldn't be PM and the turn out is apparently shockingly low, the membership want BJ.

Her colleagues actually want Sunak by some margin, she 'll be replaced within the year.

blackpearwhitelilies · 02/09/2022 21:05

Well Liz Truss focusses very much on appearance over substance and seems interested above all in photo opportunities, so if people think about appearance when it comes to her, that is largely her own doing. Similarly if she spoke intelligently it would be less astonishing to think of her Oxford degree. I’m struggling to remember a sensible, reasoned, thoughtful debate she has managed.
I don’t think it’s gender specific though. Johnson also attracted similar attention and comments. I don’t see why Truss should be immune because she’s female.

Notonthestairs · 02/09/2022 21:06

We will see won't we. She's made commitments to members and (presumably) her backers & donors and has an unenviable fix it list which may not necessarily marry with the aforementioned promises. A tricky juggle .

blackpearwhitelilies · 02/09/2022 21:07

And you’d never catch me voting Tory, but I respect MPs such as Justine Greening, Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen. I know they aren’t MPs anymore, but they were sensible, capable Tory MPs, as was Sarah Wollaston.

Alexandra2001 · 02/09/2022 21:08

@DownNative Clearly not as he almost wont in 2015... & the 2019 GE was clealy a Brexit vote.

Anyway, its really a massive diversion from Truss, other than, being a LD, she wouldn't have supported UK having a nuclear deterrent in the 90s.

MushMonster · 02/09/2022 21:10

I really wish someone makes it impossible for any further non-ellected PM. If anyone is pushed out of their own party or resigns while being PM, we should have elections.
Come on! This will be the third one to have!

Johnson and Truss are cut from the same cloth - both have tabloid styles of communication, safe in the knowledge that anyone who thinks that sounds stupid is unlikely to vote Tory. This Guardian style critique of the Tories is way off. Truss presses all the right buttons with the membership, and assuming that she attracts the right colleagues (which she seems to) then I don't think the return of Boris Johnson is likely. She is as ruthless as him, if not a bit more. If she has a brain she will build her own image very quickly, to eradicate his brand.

However, unless she gets control he will hang around like a bad smell. My guess is that she lets that Parliamentary Committee do him after making some noises about process.

GreenLunchBox · 02/09/2022 21:17

It's astonishing that the Tories have had something like four leaders in 6 years because of their failures and each time manage to trick the electorate into thinking it's a brand new government

It's the same fucking government! The same arseholes that have been ruining us for the past 12 years! Truss was in cabinet all along, nodding her head to all the catastrophic policies they've brought in.

That would this effective tabloid style communication which the Tories have got better and better at since Brexit. It is very effective with the voters. It does not have to be clever. It just has to grab your attention and your emotions. No follow up, job done.
