ShockShock

I was folding laundry in my bedroom and this chap fell out, across my wrist and onto the floor.

I'm thinking of ways to catch it safely without hurting its legs. Normally I'd put it in my hands and out the window. Not happening this time!

Does anyone know what type of spider this is?

And did I say, HELP!!!!

I cried one night when I saw a massive (and I mean the size of my hand) spider on my curtain as a young teen. My mum (not scared of spiders) came in and attempted to catch it in a cup. It dropped (with a bit of a thud) behind my bed in my tiny room. I was then told to just forget about it and she just left me to it!
I didn't sleep for weeks! I don't trust the creepy bastards. I'm an animal lover but shiver when I think about them.

meateatingveggie · 27/08/2022 23:06

Hoover. With extensions. At arms length

notnownorma · 27/08/2022 23:06

Bog standard tergenaria gigantea. Shrug
It's a spider. And? Just move it if it's in danger. Otherwise live and let live.

Dfg15 · 27/08/2022 23:07

Just splat the fucker with whatever is handy

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 27/08/2022 23:07

I've got one of them living on my landing.

Well he was until he crawled across DNephew's face whilst staying in our spare room last night.

Funny how a 28 year old man can sound like a 5 year old girl when startled.

He didn't manage to catch him so he is somewhere at large presumably upstairs.

His name is Cyril.

The Spider, not DNephew😁

I wanted a Mexican red knee tarantula but my dd said if I got one she would never ever set foot in my house again .

She was the same when I had pet rats . 🤷🏻‍♀️

Rats are amazing little creatures! My nan used to have them as pets, and I watch people with pet rats on YouTube and they are so sweet.

stillvicarinatutu · 27/08/2022 23:09

I went on a Buddhist retreat years ago and stayed in a stable block that had been converted into a room and en suite .

One of them that size ran under the wardrobe from under the bed . I didn't sleep terribly well 😂

Just move or burn your house down.

I commented this on Facebook the other day on my friend of 39 years post about the same thing & it's earned me a warning 🤣

GrilledWatermelon · 27/08/2022 23:11

There's a great FB group on UK Spider Identification or something like that - spiders used to make me a bit uneasy but I had no phobia as such. I joined the group and I've learned so much about them, they bother me a lot less now I know they're just going about their lives, feeding and breeding and doing spidery stuff. I gather there are no spiders in the UK that have a) powerful enough fangs to pierce our skin very deeply or b) any type of venom to give you more than a very mild reaction. The media are terrible at writing exaggerated horror story headlines about spider bites, although like any other bites they can get infected.

But I totally sympathise with all phobia-sufferers, I have a fear of something entirely different which effects me every day, and I know two people who are so terribly afraid of spiders that I've seen them both virtually incapacitated at the very mention of them. And I know someone else who has been known to faint if you even speak about needles or blood.

The brain is a very powerful thing, and not always in a good way.

Baoing · 27/08/2022 23:12

I learned on MN a few years back that the spindly, daddy-long-legs-looking spiders capture and kill the big ones. I've left those fellas alone ever since Grin

stillvicarinatutu · 27/08/2022 23:12

saphire rats are wonderful pets. Like pocket dogs . Mine used to lick my face like dogs give kisses , so funny and sweet . And I absolutely adore the smell of boy rats - they smell musky and gorgeous. They're very clean and very cute . I used to walk round all day with my 3 boys in my hoodie . The girls I had were more naughty and active ! The boys just lazy and want to be stroked . I absolutely adored them . I might get more at some point ....pocket dogs . ❤️

ooh bitchy, I like it.

Its a genuine question though, I want to understand why so many people are scared of spiders, it interests me.

Not sure what thread I pissed you off on but if you want to PM me with your grievences I'll happy reply :)

@ZeroFuchsGiven

my post wasn't bitchy.

oh there wasn't ONE in particular, it's just your general attitude, mocking & belittling people.

if you were genuinely interested in why people are scared of spiders, you could have just asked instead of belittling them & mocking people wanting a trigger warning.

stop being disingenuous.

Heres my first LTB

Softplayhooray · 27/08/2022 23:22

@ZeroFuchsGiven it's just a phobia, kind of unexplainable. You'll be scared of something too, just not this. Its not a logical thing, is it?

I'd have had a heart attack seeing that beast!! I'm in awe of anyone that would use glass and cardboard to remove it, as the glass would magnify it. I could physically not get that close. Mind you I love snakes and think rats are cute and there are lots of people phobic of those. We're all different.

Absolutely true.
I have a phobia of worms ( Parasitic) after a friend worked temporarily as a student in a fish factory specifically removing encysted worms in the FLESH , I couldn’t eat fish for months, or even look at a picture of them.
Spiders don’t bother me- but cod worm - Urgh.

Aww, that's so sweet. I want some pet ratties now. In my dreams I have my own home with rats and guinea pigs! And I will love and adore them. ❤️

CookPassBabtridge · 27/08/2022 23:41

I love spiders and follow all the subreddits, never kill them etc.. but there is something about these giant house spiders that gives me the willies still 😆 Think it's the size of the legs in relation to the body and the speed, and the dark colour.
I thought when we moved next to a field we'd be overrun with them (not sure why as they are indoor spiders!) but we're not, very rarely see them. But we do have tons of the translucent benign looking cellar spiders which eat them so maybe that's why.

You’ve just added a new question to sellers if I ever move. 😱

Love this!

Any woodworm?
Any damp problems?
How's your relationship with spiders?

SometimesrightlySometimeswrongly · 27/08/2022 23:46

This beast has just scuttled from under the sofa, DDog didn't even notice it. Managed to catch it under a glass and DH has deposited it outside. I might not sleep tonight!

I find if I look at the face instead of those huge legs they're a little cuter 😂

It’s a mature male giant house spider (Eratigena sp.). You can tell the males from the females by the pedipalps (little front legs). He has emboli on his pedipalps to store sperm. Females don’t have this.
He will be fine outside, despite being called ‘house spiders’ they do fine outside. We have them in our shed, under the decking, and in various nooks and crannies around the garden!

Interesting!

Very glad to know that they can live outside, too.

foxlover47 · 28/08/2022 00:08

@KermitlovesKeyLimePie that has cracked me up 🤣🤣🤣🤣
