Neighbours Dog

I'v name changed for this. But am at the end of my tether and need advice. I recently bought a flat, its lovely and I'm really happy with it, but my neighbour has an absolutely huge dog and I'm allergic. She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat, and it doesnt make any noise. Apparently she has permission for it and permission can only be removed if it is making a noise or fouling - but not for any other nuisance. What can I do?

Errr... nothing? The dog isn't bothering you and being walked three times a day is a good thing. Just try to avoid it if you're allergic.

Take antihistamines. Move home.

There's nothing you can do. She has permission for him to be there and if you say he's a large dog and she's walking him 3 times a day then she sounds like a responsible dog owner. He's also not a nuisance as you say he makes no noise.

Could you try some antihistamines?

Did you ask about dogs specifically when you bought the flat? That's possibly your only recourse if so - if the flat was misrepresented, to take it up with whoever misrepresented the flat.

I don't think there is anything you can do if the neighbour has permission to keep the dog and it's clean and well-behaved. Is there any other route out for the dog besides your communal hallway - if so your neighbour might co-operate from goodwill, to help you avoid the dog, but you can't force her to.

Try taking a piriton. Are you seriously after trying to get your neighbour to get rid of their well behaved pet?

There is nothing you can do and to be h=fair to the dog owner they are doing nothing wrong. Walking the dog three times a day is a responsible owner and you said yourself the dog is not barking or fouling. You did not ask about dogs before you bought your flat.

Take some medication.

Just walking it through the hall is making you sneeze ? Is it an incredibly hairy coat shedding dog ?

Antihistamines make me drowsy I dont think I can take them long term. I'd feel whacked all the time.

But surely if she's been given permission then they shouldve told me that they've granted permission for a dog in the building. I'll email the managing agent and ask why i wasnt told

Ask her to lower the dog from the window in a basket?

Put a peg in your nose when walking through the hallway?

But her some extra cling film and ask her to wrap the dog up before wheeling it out in a wheelbarrow?

Owner has permission and is walking the dog a reasonable amount via the building exit. In fact, if she doesn't have a garden I'm amazed she's not taking the dog out more for toileting. She's doing nothing wrong.

Was it advertised as pet free?

erm do nothing. If your allergies are so bad a dog walking down a communal hallway is a problem the onus was on you to check there were no dogs in the building.

sounds like you just don’t like crossing paths with a big dog. A few sneezes is hardly debilitating is it.

Is this serious? If you have such a huge allergic reaction to dogs you can't live in a communal property.

Report
thereisonlyoneofme · 25/08/2022 12:09

You could wear a facemask when walking through the hallway.
I dont see why you should have been told there was a dog in the building unless you specifically asked

Another option is to climb in and out of your window and avoid the streets in case you come across other dogs

If your allergies are so serious that you react to being in a communal hallway, then you should have asked whether there were dogs living in that building. The dog and the owner have done nothing wrong.

It's usually dander that sets off allergies, not hair.

Nothing, the reason it doesn’t bark and foul is that the responsible owner is exercising it 3 times a day!

YABU and entitled. Your allergy is your problem, not your neighbours.

Like others have said, your neighbour is doing nothing wrong and actually sounds quite responsible.

You weren't told about the dog because it's none of your business. You're being ridiculous.

Report
SolasAnla · 25/08/2022 12:13

unfortunately if you are that allergic to dogs community living spaces should have been ruled out in your home search.
Unless there is a clause your lease which prohibits pets and the management company are willing to go to court to enforce it you have no legal options.

You would be best served buying some face masks and use them when you are in the community areas.

Err, because it's none of your business. Would you want to be told in advance if she had kids or a goldfish? It's not relevant.

I am allergic to my own dog. Take an antihistamine a day.

You can't do anything about the dog.

It's a communal hallway not living in your flat. You will pass dogs in the street. You don't ban dogs just because you have an allergy

Report

A. Wear a mask
B. Take non drowsy antihistamines, of which there are several on the market
