Is there anything more repulsive than Boris Johnson pretending to give a shit about Ukraine?

Has he no shame?

And is there anyone stupid enough to fall for today's crass publicity stunt?

The president wasn’t too busy to arrange a commemorative flagstone for him. Or have a medal award ceremony. What useful purpose did Johnson’s visit have? He’s done nothing of any value since he resigned, it’s all been bread and circuses.

He's been to Ukraine. The Ukrainians asked him to go. So he went.

MarshaMelrose · 24/08/2022 22:46

StoneofDestiny · 24/08/2022 22:42

You can't know that but let's say he only supported them for his own nefarious reasons, what does it matter? If he did the right thing. You have no idea of anyone's motivations because you can't see into their heads

Judging by the evidence of Johnson and his behaviour, I'm making an informed judgement - as history will. He does nothing that does not draw attention to himself. He is trying to sculpt a legacy for himself - nothing more than that.

You're making a judgement formed by your prejudice. Which is not the same as an informed judgement.

DdraigGoch · 24/08/2022 22:48

applespearsbears · 24/08/2022 18:25

He's eyeing up his post PM career... goodwill ambassador anyone?!

He's probably better qualified for the job of "goodwill ambassador to Ukraine" than Blair was as "Middle East Peace Envoy".

DrManhattan · 24/08/2022 22:48

Totally agree op. I can't believe anyone can't see through it

Blossomtoes · 24/08/2022 22:50

It’s a judgement based on the information we have of his performance over the summer and the knowledge we have of his character, starting with the assessment of his housemaster at Eton, carrying on through being sacked from every job he’s ever held and a lifelong record of lying. That’s not prejudice, it’s fact.

LexMitior · 24/08/2022 22:53

Well, you can't blame him for trying, but for a journalist even he knows that the kind of history that will be written about him will be unflattering. I've never seen a PM with so many "firsts". As in, no one ever did that before because it was extremely stupid.

Ukraine - all power to them. I think Liz Truss will take that on, and probably play it better than Johnson.

Dampclout · 24/08/2022 22:55

Despite your keyboard warrior distain, the President of the Ukraine seems to welcome Boris as a true friend.

Shepandawing · 24/08/2022 22:56

What a ridiculous thing to say

echt · 24/08/2022 22:57

Johnson is nauseating. He used the Ukraine war to avoid domestic commitments, and is doing it now.

What sticks in my craw in previous bailing out on his job, is his touching/patting attaboys of Zelenskyy, so presumptuous and patronising.

LexMitior · 24/08/2022 22:58

The president of the Ukraine understands that Johnson may still advocate for lots of weapons even when not PM - the president understands politics. But seriously, Ukraine is not going to change what history writes about Boris Johnson. Too messy, too careless, and underneath, too bullish to do the job he craved.

being sacked from every job he’s ever held
That’s not prejudice, it’s fact.

He wasn't sacked when he was London Mayor, he wasn't sacked from the Spectator or the Daily Telegraph either. He resigned when he was Foreign Secretary.

LexMitior · 24/08/2022 23:06

He was a terrible Foreign Secretary - couldn't stuck to his brief and gave the Iranians every excuse they needed to imprison Zaghari Radcliffe. His own words used in court against her. Stupid careless man.

coffeerevelsrule · 24/08/2022 23:08

I thought he was sacked from The Telegraph and Spectator? But even if not, he has been sacked for lying more then once. He is in a role where the highest standards should be applied. I have never been sacked for any form of dishonesty (or for anything else!) and neither has anyone I know. He's not good enough and never has been.

Oh Clav's here. Working late tonight for tory HQ. The poster who has literally never criticised Johnson or the Tories and copies and pastes galore it's become a joke..

Clavinova · 24/08/2022 23:23

gave the Iranians every excuse they needed to imprison Zaghari-Ratcliffe

They didn't need an excuse - Nazanin had already lost her final appeal against her five-year prison sentence six months before Johnson misspoke -

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39697016

The Iranians justified her extra sentence on her attendance at a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in 2009;

She was found guilty of spreading propaganda against the regime, the court said, after she attended a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in 2009 and spoke to a BBC Persian journalist at the gathering.

LexMitior · 24/08/2022 23:27

@Clavinova - you are an intelligent person and no one is suggesting that Boris Johnson was directly responsible. Nevertheless, the Foreign Secretary is not supposed to off piste and make statements useful to hostile foreign governments such as Iran. That is was the particular failure he did in this instance.

There were of course, plenty of others, mostly concealed by civil servants and his advisers.

Clavinova · 24/08/2022 23:29

I thought he was sacked from The Telegraph and Spectator?

"Boris has been a wonderful and magnificent editor of the Spectator and we are sorry to lose him; in many ways he will be irreplaceable."

They frequently do.

I bet he does give a shit. He models himself on Churchill.

Yes well it will be a cold day in hell when Boris Johnson gets even a fraction of the garlands Churchill did. Churchill had dignity and a vision. A man loyal to his wife, country, and with a sense of purpose.

Johnson is a man. End of comparison.

Well, my suggestion is he was, on this occasion, a lose lipped nitwit - who fluffed the line, the job, and gave the Iranians what they wanted.

ThunderLizard · 24/08/2022 23:39

He is wildly popular in Ukraine. They are naming streets after him. They have named a beer after him. Zelensky has specifically said that Johnson has been Ukraine's most valued supporter since the war broke out.

Johnson will have a tarnished legacy for sure, but Ukraine won't be part of that.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 24/08/2022 23:43

travellinglighter · 25/08/2022 00:05

Lets face it. Bozo is an opportunistic liar, unfaithful husband, terrible father, incompetent and lazy. The U.K.s policy with regards to Ukraine has largely been led by Ben Wallace who seems to have broken ranks with the rest of this government by actually being semi competent.

Bozo’s contribution is to rock up in Ukraine whenever things get tough at home. His first visit coincided with him being fined for breaking lockdown and his second visit meant he had to cancel what was going to be a difficult meeting with red wall tories.

His current visit has coincided with a wave of pressure on the Tory party after it appears they voted to let water companies contaminate our beaches with sewage, power companies have made record profits on the back of rocketing energy prices and Bozo has been accused of running a Zombie government.

if you think it’s a coincidence then your a Tory party member with your fingers in your ears shouting lahlahlah or you lack a basic understanding of the role of spads(special advisors) in government and you may be lacking critical thinking skills.

travellinglighter · 25/08/2022 00:17

CapMarvel · 24/08/2022 19:08

Bozo is just living out a fantasy of being a war leader who commands respect.

When really he's just an inadequate cunt who is a few short weeks away from being a footnote in history.

I disagree. I believe future historians will write books and study the actions of Boris in detail for the next couple of centuries. I believe that future PHD candidates will earn their doctorates when writing their thesis on how the U.K. came to be taken in by an incompetent charlatan.

Jansobieski · 25/08/2022 09:46

Lol. According to our Ukrainian guest Zelensky was not well thought of prior to the war. Bit of grudging respect for him now admittedly but he certainly isn't a hero figure.
