To ask for the tangible benefits to you from Brexit, whichever way you voted

I genuinely want to know, what’s improved? Specific to you/your family?

is Brexit as it is what you thought it would be, or if you voted Remain, has it been more positive than you expected?

anyone calling it ‘goady thread’ is possibly saying Brexit isn’t going that well?

'Open up our economy'? Please explain. With diagrams.

DevonorLondon · 22/08/2022 22:40

I think not having to agree to cut our gas consumption by 15% in order to shore up the German economy is a clear one.

I’m always fascinated by the premise in these threads, as if the only reason for voting for something was what’s in it for me, me, me!

Fordian · 22/08/2022 22:42

I used to vote for 'what's in it for all of us', but, post Brexit, then Tory 'majority', I vote for 'what's in it for me, and mine'. Like everyone else either does, or has been duped by the DM says they should.

Exasperatednow · 22/08/2022 22:42

None

HotPenguin · 22/08/2022 22:44

One benefit is that my DH got a good payrise as there's huge staff shortages in his industry. Unfortunately his business is still struggling to get staff so long term it might not be so positive.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/08/2022 22:46

@Fordian Yep, some 'acquaintance' on my Facebook was posting about their company leaving the Uk and relocating within the EU and rehiring from scratch - and my first thought was I remember all your posts about remoaners , snowflakes and project fear and 'it's all rubbish' - nasty posts about Muslims etc, etc (which was totally irrelevant) and I found myself giving zero fucks about him losing his job.

capedavenger · 22/08/2022 22:49

Well, I'm reaching here but my local supermarket has much less to sell than before. So they've reorganised the shop to hide it and the aisles are much wider. Which is nice when I'm taking wheelchair users round.

It's not much of a positive is it? 😬

Sarahcoggles · 22/08/2022 22:52

It's hard to compare pre and post Brexit because Covid came in the middle, and turned all our lives on their heads. I don't think anyone knows how Brexit would have been without Covid. Horrendous staff shortages in certain areas could be due to Brexit, but could also be due to Covid ( not just acute illness or asymptomatic positives, but the general desire to not work that has swept the nation since Covid).

So less money from the same space ? It shouldn't take a rocket scientist (or Liz Truss) to work out who is going to be tapped to pay for the shortfall. Another driver of inflation.

DenholmElliot1 · 22/08/2022 22:55

I got a massive pay increase, about 70%, due to staff shortages but other than that, no, there haven't been any benefits.

I'd like to see that too.

Flatmountains · 22/08/2022 23:03

some nice benches have been put into my town through an EU Welcome Back fund....

outlanderfan88 · 22/08/2022 23:04

Our country is no longer a free for all for any poverty stricken eastern european who wants a "better life" at our expense.

SparklyAntlers · 22/08/2022 23:06

@BeanieTeen I wonder how other EU countries feel about it? Do they miss us? Has us leaving affected them much?

I'm in Ireland and have very close connections to England, lived there as a child and have lots of family there. I always felt like our countries were part of something bigger together, like we were the best pals in a wider group of friends. But now that's all changed.

I know the government doesn't represent the people - I know how disappointed my English family are at losing their EU membership - but there's something so upsetting about an ally treating an international peace treaty so carelessly. I miss feeling like we were in it together.

In terms of practicalities I haven't seen much change. It took some retailers longer than others to get things set up, but pretty much everyone is shipping here from EU distribution centres - unfortunately it's only the smaller businesses that can't so I just don't buy from them anymore, which is a shame.

I'm sorry there haven't been any benefits at your end; I think it would make it a little easier to stomach if it was at least making someone's life better.

Georgybell · 22/08/2022 23:06

Utterly disgusted especially with supposedly dumb people. I thought Uk were clever and how stupid was I. It has been the biggest economical car crash ever and affected so many peoples lives for the worse. I doubt for one second the morons that voted brexshit and those who didn’t bother to vote at all will ever have enough self respect to admit they made a mistake. Either pig headed or ignorant. Blaming other people for your own life choices doesn’t get you far.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 22/08/2022 23:08

An interesting thought.

MadAndGlad · 22/08/2022 23:08

Fuck all. My retirement to Spain has been whipped from under my feet. Those who voted Brexit should hang their heads in shame.

CockingASnook · 22/08/2022 23:09

I miss all my bright, talented European colleagues, many of whom went back to France, Spain, Portugal, Germany etc. I’d swap them for the average mouth-breathing Brexiter any day. So far as I can see the only beneficiaries are tradies who have no ambition to own their own business (and might then welcome skilled European labour) and millionaire Tories with dodgy offshore bank accounts. Slow hand clap for Leavers.

Baggyeye · 22/08/2022 23:10

Exasperatednow · 22/08/2022 22:59

I'd like to see that too.

Well there's the marvellous trade deal Liz Truss struck with Australia which means we can import all the crocodile burgers that we want from the other side of the fucking world only for them to get stuck in Felixstowe as it turns out EU bureucracy was not the root of all the UK's problems!

AND we can get chlorinated chicken from the USA. Delicious!

Boris's bus money was the solution for the NHS! ignoring the ambulance delays, record waiting times and soon to be striking nurses

I honestly can't imagine how anyone could find anything positive about the whole process and outcomes so far?

capedavenger · 22/08/2022 23:11

😞
I'm hoping it's temporary as they have "exciting new changes" signs up but it is a worry...

Georgybell · 22/08/2022 23:12

Same for my mum who held 3 jobs and worked her backside off for years and scrimped and saved and now can’t because of thick selfish louts who are too thick to know what the hell they were doing. Sorry but they are utter trash and are a stain on Britain. I hope somehow we can both find a way and leave the trash in the Uk seen as that’s how they want it.

TokidokiBarbie · 22/08/2022 23:12

Raking it in as a truck driver (relatively speaking). Making over £200 a day most days and not working any harder than before as I know employers are falling over each other.

Construction haulier my mate works for used to employ Romanian drivers pretty much exclusively, paying them £90 a day. Now they're paying some drivers £300 and all at least £180 a day.

How many poverty sricken eastern europeans getting a better life at your expense did you know personally? @outlanderfan88

MnPrem · 22/08/2022 23:14

I don’t pay any roaming charges in Europe? O2 - just use as at home Twocats. Might just be your package.

I also rather nicely got a much smaller queue at all passports than the EU lane - AND a stamp. All i need is a new blue passport now…
