To ask for the tangible benefits to you from Brexit, whichever way you voted

I genuinely want to know, what’s improved? Specific to you/your family?

is Brexit as it is what you thought it would be, or if you voted Remain, has it been more positive than you expected?

anyone calling it ‘goady thread’ is possibly saying Brexit isn’t going that well?

My Irish passport.

BeanieTeen · 22/08/2022 21:22

Absolutely no benefit. I’m angry with my “leaver” dad and his ridiculous family. They hate the French and believed that damn bus slogan!! Idiots.

I’m a big advocate of thinking for yourself and doing your own research. But for me, Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and Donald Trump saying something was a fantastic idea, while a lot of more rational and sensible folk were saying it probably wasn’t - I think it wasn’t completely unreasonable for me to assume based on that alone that it probably was not a good idea…

JaniceBattersby · 22/08/2022 21:27

I’m a journalist. It’s certainly kept me in stories for the past few years.

TutiFrutti · 22/08/2022 21:29

Well it's been utter shite for my industry. We now have a shortage of vets combined with a massive boom in pet ownership. And don't get me started on those wretched AHC certificates 😡

notanothertakeaway · 22/08/2022 21:30

IIRC, there was a suggestion that due to Brexit, we were able to progress our Covid vaccines faster than EU countries. But I don't know if that was really true

Due to Brexit, I think it's more likely there will be another referendum on Scottish independence. Not sure if it's a good thing

Overall, I thought Brexit would be a shitshow and it gives me no pleasure to be proved right

ScruffGin · 22/08/2022 21:30

I suppose the quicker roll out of vaccines for covid, although I'm not sure it's been much benefit overall.
Increased support to Ukraine whilst Europe tries to keep its energy supplies going from Putin

DuesToTheDirt · 22/08/2022 21:31

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/08/2022 20:39

Scotland might get independence.

Maybe, maybe not. As a previous yes-voter who wants to be in the EU, it is less clear cut to me now, since a border with England would not be a good thing (see the shambles in Northern Ireland...)

user1471462428 · 22/08/2022 21:37

Managed to get my two daughters and foster son into a local Catholic school when all the Polish children left. Other than that nothing I can think of.

Alaimo · 22/08/2022 21:38

BeanieTeen · 22/08/2022 21:14

Nothing so far.

There is some small perverse satisfaction in being able to say "told you so" as it all turns to shit as predicted. That is the nearest to a benefit I can come up with.

I find no satisfaction in it unfortunately. I’d love to be proven wrong in predicting it would all be a complete pissing in your own shoes activity.

I wonder how other EU countries feel about it? Do they miss us? Has us leaving affected them much?

From Scandinavia: the only people here who care about Brexit are those with family in the UK, as it's a right pain in the arse sending or receiving things to/from the UK. Otherwise, 99% of the population give no thought to Brexit, don't miss the UK, and have not been affected in any noticeable way.

Anon778833 · 22/08/2022 21:39

I’m yet to hear one from any leave voter.

avocadotofu · 22/08/2022 21:39

Absolutely nothing!

The quicker vaccines thing is a myth. If we were part of the EU we could have completely legitimately sorted our own vaccine order separate to the EU. Tories love to spin this one and it’s garbage.

re the Ukraine thing, yes maybe. But that doesn’t actually benefit a single one of us over here does it.

TheDogsMother · 22/08/2022 21:40

None. It's been absolute shite. I know it's what politicians do but I cannot believe they haven't been held responsible for the absolute lies that we're told at the time (bus etc). I voted to remain but I can see how people were compelled by the untrue arguments.

FinallyHere · 22/08/2022 21:41

quicker roll out of vaccines for covid

Another vacuous point

There is nothing to stop EU member countries declaring approval of a new vaccine ahead of other EU states.

There was nothing to force EU members to join the EU purchases of vaccines. Like the UK, they could have started their roll out at any time.

As always, the devil is in the detail.

The UK rollout got started sooner than many other countries. However, in order to allow the availability of vaccines to catch up with demand, the UK extended the interval between the two doses, then tracked the number of first doses administered.

If you compare how long it took the UK to administer both doses we were really not that much faster than anyone else in Europe.

But then the tabloids don't tend to confirm themselves to actual hard facts when picking tabloids.

Musmerian · 22/08/2022 21:44

Has it been more positive than I expected? No it bloody hasn’t.

Parky04 · 22/08/2022 21:46

I voted remain, and have seen no benefits in Brexit, but my BIL income has gone up around 35%. He works in the building trade, and is no longer undercut by foreign workers. He voted leave for this very reason, so it has worked out well for him.

DelilahBucket · 22/08/2022 21:46

Cheaper booze at the airport duty free that you can't buy loads of because you've then got to get it home in your suitcase. Not that the cost saving outweighs the business I lost due to red tape cross border trading.

Kitkatcatflap · 22/08/2022 21:46

Weekly lazy journalist trying to gird the loins of middle class mums ..... Yawn

HRTQueen · 22/08/2022 21:48

None and neither do I feel in anyway I need to gloat just because I put a cross next to remain

I always disliked the term turkeys voting for Christmas and i can understand why so many people felt desperate enough to vote for a change

many more are feeling that way too no one is a winner

The EU has big issues to deal with I’ve never understood this idea that other countries are that interested in the UK. We are not particularly significant that ended long long ago

Crikeyalmighty · 22/08/2022 21:49

@Bunnyfuller I was of course only joking about you being JRM!!! Isn't that his department though- finding Brexit benefits??? He's awfully quiet

TheKeatingFive · 22/08/2022 21:52

It will almost certainly hasten the coming of a United Ireland. I'm not sure if I personally see that as a good thing, but some will.

Blossomtoes · 22/08/2022 21:52

He's awfully quiet

Not quiet enough for my liking.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/08/2022 21:53

I forgot one- the lady on here who had a glamorous European relative floating round staying with them who showed no signs of leaving-- she could now mention the 90 day law to get rid of her!!!

TabithaTittlemouse · 22/08/2022 21:55

I’m loving it (jokes obvs. I didn’t vote for it, it’s as shit if not shitter than I had imagined).

Why do you ask @Bunnyfuller ? Are you loving life?

BeechFairy · 22/08/2022 22:00

Voted remain.
I don't see any tangible benefits from Brexit but I am so over it. If it rains (or not!) its blamed on Brexit.
I can't imagine there is ever going to be a return to EU so we need to get on and make it work rather than forever being divided over a vote that happened 6 years ago.
