To think £6,000 a year energy bills are completely unsustainable

Butterflyfluff · 22/08/2022 08:27

Following on from this thread but quite unbelievably the projected figure has gone from £4,200 to £6,000 now.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4607670-to-think-that-very-few-people-can-manage-ps4200-energy-bills?page=40

Where will this all end?

Pets will suffer too

We don't have them but many people have dogs/cats etc

@AnnieSnap I've prepared several exit strategies for DD, elderly DP and me. At least I have control over that.

I hope they would only be used in extremis. There is help out there, both practical and psychological. The bastards are not worth it.

Yes, no one will take a pet for vet treatment.

Summerholidaysnightmare · 23/08/2022 20:35

I fixed at £70 a month July 2021 which ends July 2023. I can't even begin to work out what my new amount will look like as I will get all the rises in one hit. Praying fot intervention!

pointythings · 23/08/2022 20:37

Stop pretending you don't know what Labour would do. They have made it abundantly clear exactly what they would do. If you're posting that nonsense here you're either a big Tory fan or unable to read.

This. This. For God’s sake don’t keep voting conservative people!

I have nothing but contempt for this administration and the Conservative party in general, but I really don't think the situation would be much different if we had voted for Corbyn back in the last election. Both parties are responsible for the lack of long-term thinking that is endemic in the UK.

NSA2103 · 23/08/2022 20:45

Potential to get flamed.
Am tiring of reading posts on the rising energy costs, where hardly any comments are about reducing energy, and instead expect the taxpayer to subsidise (and thus add to the £2,350,000,000,000 of national debt).
What would you do if you were PM?
Party nearly over, folks.

AtomicBlondeRose · 23/08/2022 20:45

Don’t use candles instead of lightbulbs. Bulbs are very very cheap to run even at high energy prices so candles are both dangerous and a false economy. If you’re considering cutting back on anything that you really think you need please work out the costs of running it first.

Mary54 · 23/08/2022 20:46

@pointythings

I‘m speaking from personal experience.
electricity has been around 30 cents (25p) per kilowatt hour for the last year and is due to go up to around 45 cents (38p).
We heat with a combination of oil and solar power. This keeps our oil usage down to about 2600L per year- currently about €4000. These usage figures are lower than many for a detached family home.

user1477391263 · 23/08/2022 20:47

heating water to wash themselves, washing their clothes, keeping food fresh, and lighting and heating their house from the time it gets dark (so 4pm in winter). There's no way anyone can realistically cut down on these things in this freezing cold country.

There won't be much choice for a lot of people--they will have to cut down. A lot of people will have to get into the habit of spending time mostly in one or two rooms of the house, hot water bottles at night, washing things on cold and only washing them if they are genuinely dirty, and hanging out laundry as much as possible to minimize use of the drier. I agree it's shit but there isn't much alternative.

woodhill · 23/08/2022 20:47

Everyone is trying to reduce energy but OOH we don't want to regress to how things used to be in WW2

I'm not any politics party fan.

I vaguely heard a lack luster comment or someone else on the news saying starmer would do X but it never seems plausible.

If they had a proper fool proof fan why aren't they bloody shouting about it ,laying out the economics and forcing the government to do iti

If they have genuinely found a viable way to "save" Us I'm flumoxed as to why it's not been screamed from the roof tops?

Are they also on holidays?.

Is the plan for us to descend into civil unrest and "overthrow" the government? what'?

If I was a labour mp and my party had a bone fide least painful way out of this.... I would be on everything radio...TV.... streets corners... announcing it.

Corbyn is very old news. Times have moved on. Corbyn also can not be blamed given he had no power.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 23/08/2022 20:49

In an ideal world the government has got to legislate that the companies can’t charge more than £xx per unit/standing charge. They should base it on last years prices (ideally). The WORST thing they can do it give out loans to people whilst allowing the companies to charge whatever they want. People won’t be able to afford to pay the loans back anyway.

Fully aware I’m living in La-La land by the way.

Um we have a low wage service economy - deliberately by successive arsehole governments Hmm

Even if it's true in Germany they get PAID PROPERLY (and property is half the cost of here)

Not to mention that German state pensions are considerably higher than the British starvation version.

This.

On the energy Facebook page yesterday there was an 85 year old woman saying she’s planning to get everything done during daylight hours so she doesn’t need to switch on her lights and then go to bed when it gets dark as she won’t be able to afford heating or lighting. She’s already managing on just one meal a day and cannot afford to use her cooker for that either so is having sandwiches.

People keep saying “oh we can’t live like that” - people are ALREADY living like that. Now. And it’s going to get worse.

If you paid attention you would have seen the plan - but politics only works if voters can be arsed to read/watch/listen to just a little.

Here is the plan for energy in about 40 seconds. There is a lot more detail if you can be bothered. You can't really expect to just sit and wait for someone else to educate you all the time. twitter.com/Keir_Starmer/status/1561709213969268736

How much are radiator valves things to install?
I think we can turn off radiator in rooms but I don't think we can set radiators?.
It would be much easier to be warm around a woodburner and fhen go up to bed with water bottles and electric blankets and hat's.
But you have to start warm.
We do bedding roughly every two weeks. I could stretch to 3 or 4 and perhaps only wash pillow cases more often.
We could also shower once a week.
Cut down on clothes wash
My.main.concern is not having one warm room.

What an incredibly rude tone.

How would labour ever get in if they expect people to seek out their policies and listen out for them.

Maybe this is just another area where they have gone wrong..

It was a clip from Sky News which is as mainstream as you get Hmm

You come across as badly informed, do you expect people to praise you?

I am honestly tired of ill-informed voters blaming everyone else for their lack of interest in the things that affect them directly. Stay ignorant if you like but don't blame other people for it.

I've reduced use. Last winter heating on for two hours a day or less instead of 4-6. I've cut down on showers. Turn almost everything off at the plug. Don't have a tumble drier or dish water. Usually wash up in cold water, sometimes boil a kettle for that rather than turn the immersion on. Washing machine is usually on a cold eco setting.

Your first point that you are not into politics addresses why you don’t know the answers to your questions. Kier Starmer and members of his shadow cabinet are shouting from the rooftops an alternative, fully costed, compassionate plan. He is on TV news and Twitter daily putting it forward. It is also reported in the Guardian and the Daily Mirror. The rest of the newspaper are self admitted Tory Press. They will never lay out Labour policies. When they touch on them or their authors, they are spun to discredit the Labour Party and it’s leader. As for getting changes implemented, they are not in power. We, our safety, lifestyles, NHS etc are in the hands of corrupt millionaire Tories. Labour can do nothing unless the British electorate vote them into Government.

MibsXX · 23/08/2022 20:58

Dotjones · 22/08/2022 11:40

That plan is neither comprehensive nor fully costed. They would be in breach of international law because they would be taxing companies on profits generated elsewhere. That's unsustainable, because effectively every country could levy tax on multinationals to the point where they tax bill is greater than the company's value.

e.g. if the UK charge Shell 20% tax on profits, and so did the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, China, Australia it would quickly become impossible for them to pay their tax bill.

Also why shouldn't prepay meter customers pay more? It's more expensive to supply energy that way, more infrastructure is needed.

The last statement, given that some are on pre-payment through no choice, one was here when we moved in and swalec refused to change it to quarterly, thus preventing us from switching for a better tariff deal.... and we are paying IN ADVANCE not getting into debt which surely costs more to chase up in the end... not to mention all smart meters, which the companies pushed for all to have, can easily with a few clisks at head office, be turned from pre pay to whatever they want, not a lot of infrastructure needed there. Its all feeling like one huge con

It has been all over bbc news, sky news and social media. If you haven’t heard their proposals you literally must have been watching nothing but Love Island or something. I’m teasing but honestly it HAS been everywhere.
