To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Exactly you can't get fat or stay fat without eating too much.

@Unscented Sorry, the last part of that is utter bollocks. If you eat the right amount of food to sustain normal daily activities when you are overweight then you will stay overweight.

You need to eat significantly less than the calories you burn off to sustain weight loss, and usually over a long period of time. Then when you get to the weight you want you still have to eat less than you did before to stay at the lower weight.

Eating less than your body needs for a long time is hard and you can also easily mess up your metabolism and lose muscle tone meaning it's hard to keep the weight off after as you can hardly eat anything without putting weight back on.

When I was in my 20s I was a size 8-10 and between nine and ten and a half stone - BMI 19 to BMI 22. I eat a lot less now aged 46 and am signfiicantly heavier. It's not easy, or we would all be slim.

In my experience no one I have ever met has been “disgusted” by a plus size woman.

But glorifying obesity is no different to glorifying alcohol or cigarettes or cocaine. Let’s not dress it up, obesity is a massive health risk to the person who is obese. This is not fat shaming, it is recognising that obesity is a global health issue all of its own.

I don't think wanting to buy clothes that slim people can also buy is glorifying obesity Hmm

Yes but if you have significant fat stores, if you're maintaining them, you're eating too much.

lovemelongtime · 22/08/2022 09:45

But what is the point of this fat shaming thread ?

amicissimma · 22/08/2022 09:46

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 08:48

Why have you written such a nasty post picking on me?

We have a growing problem in the UK of obesity which can make people sick, in pain and/or unhappy; it's leading to increasing costs in healthcare and provision of specialist equipment.

I doubt many people would want to stop anyone who really, really desires to be severely overweight and enjoy the problems that brings. But the fact is that those people are in the minority and even they cost society as do people who undertake all sorts of dangerous activities. Society as a whole does need to monitor what resources it spends, on whom and why.

So is it really helpful to attempt to shut down discussion and cry 'fat shaming' when anyone points out that obesity is a problem for both many of the obese themselves and society as a whole? Is it really thought that we should just let people stew in their own juice even if they would rather change their condition, rather than discuss the situation and try, however awkwardly, to work out ways to help?

Tabbouleh's post is factual and neutral and mentions no individual. Yet it gets the response that it is nasty and 'picking on me'.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 09:46

Tabbouleh · 22/08/2022 08:35

Literally who cares what men think of Marilyn Monroe?:) She absolutely was not a modern size 18.

No she wasn’t.
Kim Kardashian had to diet to get into her famous shimmery silver gown recently (there’s so much wrong with so much at that story) and has anyone seen those photos?

MM was absolutely not a modern size 18.

It’s rubbish!

So much whataboutery on.

I’ve got this, I’ve got that, I’ve got MH problems, etc.

Are we now saying that 2/3 UK women are ow and obese and that there’s always another reason for it, bar just consuming more calories than you burn?

That was not the point of this post. Nobody (initially) said anything untoward or derogatory about larger women - then the ‘skinny minny’ insults started flying and now look where we are

A size 16 is large, and 18 is indeed large. It’s not fattest to say that and the t potential for slipping back into anorexia… I mean, come on!

laurelleafs · 22/08/2022 09:46

I am nearly 6ft talk. I am a size 18. Even if I was skinny, I wouldn't fit into size 8 and 10 and 12, my body just isn't made that way. I have a stone to lose, but I'm not in an obese BMI and my height means I pull it off. No one's offered me a seat yet, anyway.

But size 16 is the accepted norm in the UK, has been for years. For you to say you don't know anyone over a 14 and that 16 isn't the norm, you're being deliberate obtuse and you know you're being a bitch. Come on, leave off women's bodies for a sec, eh?

UWhatNow · 22/08/2022 09:46

Wow. As a size 18 menopausal woman this thread tells me I’m disgusting, unattractive, abnormal, greedy and just all round worthless as a human being… I guess it’s an easy and unpoliced way of punching down on people that makes those posters feel really smug and good about themselves. Well done you. Well done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Rosehugger · 22/08/2022 09:47

Our bodies won't tell us that though, our bodies are predicated towards eating a lot when food is plentiful, and also trying to stop you losing weight by giving you signs to eat more when you "haven't eaten enough".

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 09:47

No. But you’re 6 feet tall. Average British woman is way way shorter.

It’s a silly comparison.

laurelleafs · 22/08/2022 09:48

I did have an anorexic phase when I was growing up too. Can't seem to get it right to please the smug 14s with no health issues

AprilRae91 · 22/08/2022 09:48

It’s definitely plus size though there can be size 18 women who are healthy. I think most people are a 10,12 or 14?

I’ve been a 14 for years and am the fattest in my circle though I eat well and exercise, body doesn’t seem to want to go smaller.

Cheeriyo · 22/08/2022 09:48

lovemelongtime · 22/08/2022 09:45

But what is the point of this fat shaming thread ?

How is it fat shaming? Why can't people discuss it? Other types of addiction are discussed openly, many of which also have underlying factors that contribute same as being overweight. No I'm not saying people who are overweight are the same as addicts, but similarly due to societal, monetary, physical or mental reasons often there are reasons someone eats to excess at the detriment of their health. Other things harmful to health people are keen to support in reduction measures, yet when it's weight its fAt ShAmInG.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 09:48

@amicissimma yes. Because she mentioned all the issues I have disclosed. It was targeted at me.

I am autistic, was anorexic and had ARFID, am physically disabled.

Livpool · 22/08/2022 09:49

@P3nnyroyaltea agreed! I have been on oral
steroids a lot over last 4 years and am.now a
16-18 after never being larger than a 12.

An 18 is plus size though

This. And it’s weird, in normal every day life I live a happy active full life with no judgement. I guess online people feel like they can say the worst things.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 09:50

Yup. Steroids here too. But it'll be my fault I have arthritis.

Rosehugger · 22/08/2022 09:50

If you don't know personally anyone who is overweight then just walk round an average British town or wait at airport arrivals.

laurelleafs · 22/08/2022 09:50

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 09:47

Thanks for telling me I'm freakishly unaveragely tall too :D heard it all now. What a tall fat freak I am

amicissimma · 22/08/2022 09:50

@dribblewibble, those conditions apply to other people. She didn't mention you. Nor was her neutral and factual post nasty. It simply pointed out that not everybody has those conditions, overweight or not.

CanDo92 · 22/08/2022 09:51

Travis1 · 22/08/2022 06:25

unless someone is sitting on your face their weight and size and whether they are ‘plus size’ or ‘normal’ 🙄 is not your problem or concern

Well, that’s not strictly true though is it? They could be someone you care about, or your patient.

It’s also not great if you are on a long flight next to someone who’s extremely obese.

laurelleafs · 22/08/2022 09:52

Shall I tell you what the point of these posts is? It's so public health board mumsnetters can put other women down and make them feel like shit when they go on the internet, at all times. There is no other reason for it.

Lineala · 22/08/2022 09:53

P3nnyroyaltea · 22/08/2022 00:19

Hilarious. I’m 5’10 and was an 18 until about a year ago. Nothing unhealthy about what I was doing it was actually meds from doctors. Actually sitting here acting like the health police when you know nothing about others lives. 16 has been ‘average’ womens size for about 5 years. Catch up.

Size 16 now is what was a size 22 forty years ago. Of course a s16 is being overweight. And you can say whatever you choose, but you are will still be overweight in a 16.

PeskyYeti · 22/08/2022 09:53

I don't understand why this matters to do? Why do you feel the need to put people in their place about if they're plus sized or not?

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 09:53

laurelleafs · 22/08/2022 09:48

Most women; and indeed most size 14s (using your logic) really don’t give a crap about your dress size or what you weigh.
