Little Britain

Just seen an interesting discussion on Twitter regarding Little Britain and how damaging it was to minority groups in the UK. I must admit I liked it at the time (I was a teenager) but can't understand how they got away with it now. And I don't think I've ever seen them apologise for it?

There was the disabled guy pretending to be disabled.
The old lady who threw up when she found out anyone foreign had baked the cake and she was eating.
The university secretary who used blatant racist language.
Also transphobic/homophobic issues.

Were they perhaps double bluffing by poking fun at the views of people who for example think all disabled people are fakers? Or was it really that offensive? It definitely wouldn't be aired now but it wasn't really all that long ago. And Walliams and Lucas are still very much in the public eye.

I dont view 20 years ago as very different to these times anyway, its usually viewed that way by young people. Its like yesterday to me

Its not shocking, its just a comedy sketch show. Its funny now. Nothing has changed except a wingey narrative about what people are 'allowed' to laugh at.

Most people are not influenced by what social media tells them they should be offended by

The only sketch I really loathed was the one in which Walliams is dressed as an ugly old man who has a Thai bride. Every time he decides to get rid of her, she gives him a BJ. I always found that really distasteful. It seemed to be making fun of the plight of these women. A young Thai girl being married to an ugly western man (who is, let's be honest, taking advantage of her poverty), isn't funny to me.

Everyone knows a creepy sex tourist who bought his wife, and was probably a virgin before - it was taking the piss out of people like him. LB also did quite well at subtlety touching on the macabre side of life, such as what it is like for Thai brides.

Well no
I am talking about the small Minded hypocrites it's obviously making fun off

So the racists actually feel ashamed when they see a white man shouting ‘curry’ at an Indian woman because they see it as so multi-layered that they appreciate it as a dig at them?

Ellemnope · 19/08/2022 19:00

I know many black and Asian people who loved it.
Goodness Gracious Me took the piss out of White Brits and many black and Asian comedians still do so what’s different?

Bunchymcbunchface · 19/08/2022 19:00

It was brilliant and still is. Netflix removed it.
as for Black Face …..the movie White Chicks is still available on Netflix though….

It was always shit. White Chicks is also shit but it punches up instead of down ie is in no way comparable.

Bubblebubblebah · 19/08/2022 19:02

You know Pumper. Do you realise that you basically suggested that disabled people fake disabilities just so you take a dig? Because why else would they recognise themselves in it?
It was very clear from my posts what I meant. Lots of hypocrites and hateful people do not like reflection of them. That is, to spell it out, what I meant.

White people take the piss out of white people
White people take the piss out of black people
Black people take the piss out of black people
Black people take the piss out of white people

And all shades in between and vice versa

The common denominator here is 'people'. People are funny, weird, contradictory, horrible, nice, lazy, kind, aggressive, beautiful, stupid, all manner of things

And those things are sometimes funny to exaggerate or show up.

PlanetNormal · 19/08/2022 19:04

Little Britain was hilarious. The whole point of the show was that it was ridiculing the outdated, insular, small-minded prejudices of some sections of British society. For the benefit of the hard of thinking, the clue was in the title, FFS. Unfortunately, some people are too thick to understand that, in the same way they are too thick to understand that the Major in Fawlty Towers was a parody of racism, or that Alf Garnett was a parody of ignorant working class bigotry.

Some people really should stick to watching Mrs Brown’s boys. It will make them laugh, and the humour won’t go over their empty little heads.

Runmybathforme · 19/08/2022 19:04

Thought it was hilarious, still do.

That’s garbage though. It wasn’t some massive, incredible layered take on racism. It was an excuse to use racist and disablist language on prime tv. Racists thought it was brilliant, they weren’t offended by it because why would they be?

Only if you believe that there’s no white privilege. Do you?

I love it. Granted we know better than blackface nowadays but the joke was very much on the racists/homophobes/etc than the minorities themselves. The woman from Fat Fighters was overweight and the women who spat out the lesbian jam turned out to be a lesbian at the end. They're all hypocrites.

I'll forever howl at the scene on Come Fly With Me where the immigration officer, Ian Foot is interviewing Taaj and assumes that just because he's brown, he's from Pakistan and loves cricket and curry. I saw it posted on TikTok a while ago and hundreds of non-UK people were asking where the clip was from because they thought it was funny. The joke is definitely on the racist, not the minority.

That’s a great joke.

”Where are you from?”
”Bradford”
”Ok, we’ll where are your parents from?”
”Oh right! Er, Sheffield”

🤣

CloudCatz · 19/08/2022 19:09

It's called "Little Britain" for a reason... The racist characters are not to be role-modelled, they are being parodied.

OperaStation · 19/08/2022 19:09

tallulahhula33 · 19/08/2022 17:46

Fwiw I did used to find it very funny, I'm just shocked that they got away with it.

Got away with what? They were taking the piss out of the racist/homophobic views. Thaose obviously weren’t their actual views 🙄

People seem to have completely forgotten the point of humour.

Bubblebubblebah · 19/08/2022 19:10

Is Marjorie the winner of Little Britain?

Bubblebubblebah · 19/08/2022 19:10

Just to clear it up. As the best worse character not beloved character. Just in case

Ugh I hate it when people objectively declare something was shit.

It was shit in your opinion which is no more valid than the next person.

Unless you actually think you matter so much h that you can declare the bottom line on the quality of a popular TV show?

Yep.

I’m quite embarrassed for people who think it was poking fun at marginalised groups when it was poking fun at the people who treated them badly

It was shit. It was racist, punching down, David-Williams-self-indulgent garbage. It was made by two white men who knew that putting on Asian-face would get laughs from the thick.

CloudCatz · 19/08/2022 19:13

Of course most racists won't understand that it's parodying them, because most are thick as shit anyway. It doesn't stop being a parody just because the people it's parodying don't recognise it as parody.

CallMeBubbleDarling · 19/08/2022 18:35

I loved the first two series and some of the characters were hilarious (as my username alludes to). The third series was less funny. Watching it now there are some moments that make me wince but overall I enjoyed it and still quite Marjorie from fat fighters regularly.

Dust. Anybody? Dust.

goshy · 19/08/2022 19:14

I always thought it was taking the piss about those who had the views as opposed to saying the views are right. I found it funny 🤷🏻‍♀️

So you do think that of all the people who watched that show, you are the person to objectively declare if it was good or not?

Blimey I wish I had your delusion self esteem!

How are you missing that it was parodying small minded British people and their attitudes. It’s even called Little Britain FFS

goshy · 19/08/2022 19:17

It’s even called Little Britain FFS

exactly, the clue is in the name 😆
