Little Britain

Just seen an interesting discussion on Twitter regarding Little Britain and how damaging it was to minority groups in the UK. I must admit I liked it at the time (I was a teenager) but can't understand how they got away with it now. And I don't think I've ever seen them apologise for it?

There was the disabled guy pretending to be disabled.
The old lady who threw up when she found out anyone foreign had baked the cake and she was eating.
The university secretary who used blatant racist language.
Also transphobic/homophobic issues.

Were they perhaps double bluffing by poking fun at the views of people who for example think all disabled people are fakers? Or was it really that offensive? It definitely wouldn't be aired now but it wasn't really all that long ago. And Walliams and Lucas are still very much in the public eye.

I didn’t call you an idiot at all. I said it was like arguing with a particularly stupid child. Essentially because you’re doing the online equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying ‘la la la I’m not listening’.

Bit Jesus Christ fucking alive to your answers - once again, Just because the racists et al never got their commute be it doesn’t mean it wasn’t poking fun at racists. It was a sketch show, not a feel good movie. Furthermore, plenty would say they DID get their commupence, or learnt a lesson - Marjorie Dawes was awful to fat people and turned out to be putting on weight herself. The WI lady turned out to be gay. etc etc

Although some progress to your answer to no 3 - except it didn’t perpetuate the attitudes, it parodied and made fun of them.

You’re still not answering. Was the shop character worth the racism?

I have answered.

I didn’t find it racist. I y destined the satire of the racist characters. Therefore your question isn’t accurate.

I know you’re dying For me to trip up and declare myself to be Nigel Farage-esque style of racist but it ain’t gonna happen. Because it’s possible to understand satire about racism without being a racist.

XelaM · 19/08/2022 19:58

Computer says "no"... 🤣 I loved Little Britain and I'm a foreigner

No, I am listening. I just don’t believe anyone really thinks Little Britain wasn’t racist.

So you think everyone in here who says they don’t believe it isn’t, are liars?

I genuinely don’t understand how, if you say you know what satire is? You can’t see how it applies to Little Britain?

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 19/08/2022 20:00

*Dont believe it is

startfresh · 19/08/2022 20:01

The only one I couldn't stand was bitty. Although nowadays I would get the joke a bit more, about people bfing kids that could ask etc, back then it was just disgusting to watch for me!

The rest made me laugh, but I was clearly laughing at the person with the small-minded, bigoted views, not at the person they were reacting to.

Definitely wouldn't be made now, but we need to appreciate it was allowed humour for it's time. Same as people find issues with friends and others.

The population has been dumbed down over time to not understand satire. People struggle to think for themselves and want to be told how to tie their shoes laces, when to leave the house, what to think. It’s no surprise that the same population struggles to grasp the itself deprecating humour of Little Britain.

👏🏼

So, explain to me please how Matt Lucas wearing strings to pull back his eyes isnt racist?

Why didn’t they get an actual Asian person to play Ting Tong?

Bubblebubblebah · 19/08/2022 20:07

Maybe was hard to find Thai guy in London who would play the role🤷🏻

Really? Lack of available actors?

Everyone knows a creepy sex tourist who bought his wife, and was probably a virgin before - it was taking the piss out of people like him. LB also did quite well at subtlety touching on the macabre side of life, such as what it is like for Thai brides.

Is this the sketch about Ting Tong from Tooting? I thought the joke there was that it's not clear who is exploiting who - yes, he's the creepy man who thinks he's got an internet wife to service him, but what's revealed through the sketch is that Ting Tong is only pretending to be from Thailand and she actually comes from Tooting, 'she' is actually a he, she can't actually cook/clean etc. Every time something else comes out, the creepy man says you'd better go, but Ting Tong seduces him and because he's a creepy man he can't help himself..so Ting Tong gets to stay on, rent free. Hilarious!

Obvs wouldn't be made now because Matt Lucas is made up to look Thai, plus trans people no longer seen as a joke.

I’ve already said the blackface isn’t cool but it was of it’s time. The same EVERY show is of it’s time. Yet to find a show that had the producers use a crystal ball to check people in 2 decades won’t be offended.

But to answer your question - the show was very much about ML & DW, they played the main characters presumably to add to the comedy. Which is likely why they didn’t hire an actor.

Seriously though if you don’t understand satire and are so easily offended then maybe stick to teen comedies on Netflix that we’re not made before 2022

Sooveritallnow · 19/08/2022 20:13

I love Little Britain. Its a great programme that's takes the piss out of bigots and shows them how ridiculous they are., its not taking the piss out of minorities, women, disabled etc. But the eternally offended think its is and have got it removed from several streaming platforms as they feel only their incorrect view matters.

Ooh I don’t remember that at all! I don’t think there were many Ting Tong sketches though?

It wasn’t of it’s time though, it was released in 2003. Loads of people were anti-racism then, it wasn’t the 1930s and the minstrel show.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 19/08/2022 20:16

I saw the very same thread earlier, OP.
I never found Little Britain funny in the slightest
The throwing up sketches were genius and so redolent of the racist attitudes of some of the older generations. It was shining a light on racism
See, I can understand that a bit BUT.... for all that it was so called "shining a light on" , like the thread said it also emboldened racist views.
People would see this and see nothing wrong in what they were doing, after all, it's on telly to be laughed at.
That's not a good thing.
I'd rather comedy like this is off air now as any racists don't have an excuse to feel they're right and take the piss/abuse people with their racist views.

Only if you believe that there’s no white privilege. Do you?

Wtf has white privilege got to.do with comedy? Not everything in the world is about this. FFS we'll be denigrating the Muppets next.

It’s got a lot to do with White Chicks.

Do you think racists are less racist now? I'm not sure racists ever think they are the wrong.

It wasn’t racist. It was poking fun at racism. You clearly don’t understand the sketches. Read the thread. Others have explained the satire.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 19/08/2022 20:20

@VladmirsPoutine

It was very offensive. People would openly mock minority groups based on the characters on the show
That's what I was getting at with my post, just seen yours.
