Neighbors in our garden in the midst of project site

I am in US and we are having a patio installed at our house. It's a process that takes several days - framing, pouring, stamping, polishing and sealing the concrete.

This morning they are pouring the concrete. 5-6 workers in our yard and it is a mess with wet grass, mud, concrete, tools and men working. I looked out 30 minutes ago and saw neighbors wandering around with their coffee, asking questions, standing smack in the middle of the project staging area, in front of tools and equipment, talking to the men.

I was floored! Who does this? I watched thought about it for 5 minutes or so, then told my husband and we agreed I should go speak with them. We are both WFH today and even we don't go out and stand in the middle of the project unless we have a quick question.

By the time I got out there they had walked out into the street, through a small gap in one of our hedges. I told them I was shocked to see people in our yard and to please knock before dong that again. I said "This is a real boundary issue for me."

He said "Well we will be back in an hour to watch them stamp the concrete."
I was just so surprised that they didn't immediately apologize, and continued to feel they had a right to be on our property without permission.

I said "Well no, I would rather you did not."

Would you mind having neighbors just entering your property without asking?

What is being in the US got to do with anything? Have I missed something?

I have seen posters mention the OP's writing style and wanted to point it out in case anyone wondered why I use the term yard and do not spell things the way you do in UK.

Also,

Buck is played by John Candy, Sandy is an amalgamation of all the Golden Girls.

Yesterday I received my first ever anonymous plant delivery

What sort of plant was it? Something soft, apologetic and fragrant? Or something hard, thorny and invasive?!

A lovely pot of succulents. Not small, either.

If anything it’s added to the mental image for me. He wears chinos pulled up high with a belt and short sleeved button down shirt (option on beige baseball cap). She wears a tennis shirt, pink plastic sun visor, knee length beige shorts, tennis socks, sneakers and an ill-advised short perm.

I’ve named them Buck and Sandy.

You really aren't terribly far off. Although her hair is cute. White longish bob.

Also, I happen to have a diagram if anyone is interested. I really am being quite ridiculous.

Can we be friends? 😂

Only if you do me a diagram. Dems the rules.

Floweryflora · 24/08/2022 21:47

God all that drama just coz the neighbours wandered over to have a look at rhe patio being laid. You couldn’t make it up . You’d think they were shagging in your bedroom the way you’ve reacted. 😂

YesitsBess · 24/08/2022 21:50

@Floweryflora at this point we have no idea what Buck and Sandy are capable of. They could be in the hedge right now for all we know.

PoseyFlump · 24/08/2022 22:03

Oooh I love a good diagram!

John Candy. What a genius.

I don't think Buck and Sandy would go as far to shag in your bedroom. But they might watch if you forgot to close your blinds.

Not to scale and of course, being American, I made my house the center of the universe.

You won't be interested in the diagram then. 😂

Would you mind having neighbors just entering your property without asking?

I would mind VERY much. I had a major house renovation a year ago, and thank goodness, my builders refused various requests by nosey people to look inside my house to see what they were doing. My house had been rather dilapidated for years before I bought it, so I think the people on my street felt they had a "right" to see what the builders were doing to restore it.

No, they have no right. And neither do your neighbours.

YesitsBess · 25/08/2022 15:42

@unname we are now officially friends. Lovely diagram! Particularly enjoyed the mud.

Will Buck and Sandy want to try out the patio once it’s laid? Will they park their motor home on it? Has your concrete gone off yet?

MRex · 25/08/2022 15:48

We have a neighbour who chats at great length to anyone. Thankfully even he has sufficient awareness to wait for builders to finish work before he corners them and chats to them.

It's rude to wander onto someone's property and distract workers, YANBU. They're weird.

bilbodog · 25/08/2022 15:55

Excellent diagram OP!

So galling.

It's like they think because they "knew" your house long before you bought it, they are entitled to it.

Thank you for the diagram appreciation!

Buck and Sandy were probably aghast last night when they saw the neighbor behind us walk through the shared hedge, check out the patio then come around front to bring us two huge bowls of gazpacho soup.

I am waiting for a letter of complaint through the mailbox.

It really is lovely and never boring.

A few days ago, soup bearing neighbor had the window washers appear. He didn't remember scheduling them and in fact, had been cleaning the windows a few at a time, but let them at it. A day later his neighbor on the other side was very upset because the window washers were insisting they had come and cleaned her windows already.😂(Laughing both at mix up and at my pretending this is high entertainment!)

Also, inspired by Jackie Weaver, we have all become involved in township meetings, which really are quite entertaining.

Wonderful diagram! I had been imagining the new patio area was closer to the street. Heck, Buck and Sandy had a right good ramble through your garden!

I love succulents. Were they the cute squidgy ones or sharp cacti?
An anonymous cacti delivery sounds like the beginning of a murder she wrote episode.

The window cleaners going to the wrong house. You couldn't make this stuff up 😂😂

Updated Diagram with random extra info gossip.

A bird told me that the person who reported the RV, who actually moved away from the neighborhood long ago, was visiting, saw a police officer and got chatty. His grandkids usually have 1-2 cars parked in the same area. Of course it mildly annoys us they don't park in front of their own place (even though we realize we don't own the road and it's completely ridiculous.)

We were not happy about the RV being reported - thought it was a bit unwarranted but they have all lived here longer than us and maybe had already come to the conclusion that Buck and Sandy were cheeky types who need to be put in check. They did in fact, twice ask Soup Maker if they could use his electricity for the RV.
