To put dirty knickers in my own laundry basket?

I've lived in houseshares for many years and always had my own laundry basket in my room. I've been living with DP for 4 years now, we have a great relationship, can talk about anything, and share everything BUT I prefer to put my used/worn underwear in my own little laundry basket I have for them. Sometimes I have period leaks or discharge and I dont want anyone seeing that/dealing with that. (Yes, it happens, I'm not embarrassed of my period but I'm quite a private person in general). I don't like using liners every day because it's bad for the environment.

Anyway, DP thinks this is weird and funny, and always jokes about my 'stash of underwear' I keep in their own basket! Is this really that weird? Does everyone else just put your worn underwear in the family/shared washing basket?

There will come a time where you've got bad food poisoning or stomach flu and the kids too and he'll see it all (unless he's not a helpful type which seems not the case.

Until then by all means do what makes you happy. But I bet you won't be bothering in 20 years time! It's hard enough to get my teens to put their dirty pants in ANY washing basket.

You would put shitty pants in the basket? Surely give them a hand wash first?

Popeyeandolive · 18/08/2022 21:09

Of course. But that would be DH rinsing out if you were knocked out with food poisoning. Unless youve never had food poisoning?!?

Popeyeandolive · 18/08/2022 21:10

Shitty pants are no big deal after a couple kids!

The undies themselves aren't the problem, the problem is if you're doing this because you're ashamed of normal female body functions. Not your fault, it's the fucked up society we live in. Wonder if you have children op? Firstly, once you've seen the state of theirs, yours is nothing. Secondly, be sure not to pass the shame thing onto any daughters. I totally get how you feel, but having daughters has forced me to have a word with myself.

Glitterblue · 18/08/2022 21:14

I used to feel like that then started just buying plain black - problem solved! I didn't have my own basket but I always felt self conscious if DH was hanging the washing out/up etc.

Perfect28 · 18/08/2022 21:32

It's odd, who cares? Surely you have discharge every day, that's normal? Do people really wear pantiliners every day? How bizarre.

It’s simpler just to hand wash your knickers as soon as you take them off…

No it really isn't simpler to hand wash all your underwear than just to put them in the washing machine yourself.

I put my washable liners in the communal basket but then I always hand wash stains first, and fold them up into a to little poppered bundle so nothing to see. Your DH is being a bit unkind mocking you though. Your undies, your choice.

I don't think it's in any way weird to do what you want with your own laundry.

I think it's somewhat weird of your DH to comment, let alone frequently joke about it.

Agreed. Your Dh is weird for going on about it.

Perfect28 · 21/08/2022 07:36

All the hand washers and liner wearers, why? Why are you embarrassed or ashamed about something that is perfectly normal?

onlythreenow · 21/08/2022 08:29

I like doing laundry. Find it quite satisfying. And I'm more careful

I agree - when I was married I did all the washing and ironing, and quite enjoy both. He did the cooking, which suited me and I had no wish whatsoever to trade jobs. There is nothing weird at all about one partner always doing the same job.
