"Darling, don't be smug"

Visiting at a friend's house (not local) our 2 DDs, both age 3 playing - hers is slightly younger than mine.

Her DD and mine are doing a puzzle together and mine can't do it as quickly as hers can.

Her DD says something to my DD along the lines of "I can't believe you can't do this I've been doing it since I was two".

My friend replied "darling, don't be smug."

Was this a dig that my DD is developmentally behind or something? I ask genuinely as it's not a term that's used here where I live and I've just read another thread about 'smug' meaning superior.

AIBU to now be thinking her telling my DD off for being 'smug' was an implication that my DD was behind?

OP, have you no words? Are you drunk or something to say you're only capable of being an arse at this point?

😂

Just for you, my chilled out little friend.

Ah ok OP. You got a lot of support here as well as people who challenged your view. You were horrible to a poster trying to help.

You're either in a bad place tonight or drunk.

Good luck with those friendships!

Yes!

Calm down, OP. You don't have to pretend laugh. Sit in a cool, airy room for awhile. Try and use your words when you're feeling overwhelmed. You'll feel better soon.

I’m now here solely to keep a tally of how many times the word ‘smug’ gets said on this thread.

stuntbubbles · 19/08/2022 16:27

I’m keeping track of how many empty and increasingly unconvincing 😂 poor OP can post

millefeuille2 · 19/08/2022 16:36

OP is too busy working on puzzles with her DD so that she can be smug next time. Leaver her alone, she's got a lot of work ahead of her!

OP, just so you can practise, I think the 'smug' emoji is this 😌

@stuntbubbles let us reconvene with our findings at 22:37.

Yes, of course it's absolutely possible she meant that her child shouldn't "feel" superior and mean it as ad ig. I mean, obviously this is entirely possible. But it's also possible she meant it well. Only you can know though how she acted, if she is a decent friend and so on. I'd assume the best intention, and just wait and see.

mycatisannoying · 20/08/2022 08:00

The wording of the admonishment bothers me. Smug is an unusual choice of word, and doesn't really mean anything to a child.
'Stop showing off' would be better.
She's not really telling off her child - she's making herself seen to be doing something in front of you.

redfairy · 20/08/2022 09:07

OP, are you usually this inarticulate? Other posters have taken the time to try to explain what isn't really an unusual word and reassure you that it wasn't a dig on your DD's development.
I usually don't comment on posters behaviour but you are coming across as incredibly rude.

It might mean something to this child, though. Children pick up the words their parents use; this mum says “smug”, the kid is going to know what smug means.

Now that is being smug.

🤭

SummerHouse · 20/08/2022 10:10

Smug is such a great word. I can see this thread going some way to increasing its usage. I wow to use it today!

rainbowmilk · 20/08/2022 10:15

Now singing “pregnant women are smug” on repeat…
