To ask why all of the Queen's adult grandchildren have chosen to have kids?

Out of the Queen's 6 adult grandchildren, all of them have had children. AIBU to ask whether this is normal in terms of pretty every member of a family having chosen to have kids?

I have chosen to not have children so feel like if I was a member of the royal family I would be judged quite a bit on my choice to remain childfree.

It is very unusual to choose not to have children so of course the majority of people will have them.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 16/08/2022 19:41

Interesting. This must vary a lot by family. In my family of siblings and cousins none of the six members aged 25-29 have had kids yet and only four of the eleven members aged 30-45 have had kids. No infertility as far as I’m aware, most of us in the 30+ group have been quite vocal in that we don’t plan on having any children. Several of my parent’s siblings didn’t have children, it seems fairly normal in our family to want to be child free!

Aristocrats need heirs.

Roselilly36 · 16/08/2022 19:43

Not exclusive to the RF, most people want to have children, there are no adults in my family that have not had 1,2 or 3 children.

drpet49 · 16/08/2022 19:09

I don’t know anyone who has actively chosen not to have children.

Several of my friends are childfree through choice.

KimberleyClark · 16/08/2022 19:44

I’m the only one of my generation of my extended family not to have had children. Infertility in my case. I do feel it at family gatherings, like I am the odd one out.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 16/08/2022 19:45

Everyone in my family has had children. Most people do. I know very few people who haven't had children.

TBH I'm amazed at the number of posters who don't know anyone who hasn't had children or never wanted children.

Me too! Of us 8 cousins only 3 have had children. The rest chose not to, not a case of infertility just a simple choice.

2pinkginsplease · 16/08/2022 19:46

I don’t think it’s that uncommon.

my gran had 6 grandchildren and 4 have children 2 don’t (both gay and don’t want children)

my other gran has 3 grandchildren all have children.

my mil has 4 children and they all have children as does my mum.

I think it’s quite unusual to choose not to have children , I only know one friend from school who doesn’t and that was out of 6 of a friendship group. She focussed on her career.

YellowPlumbob · 16/08/2022 19:46

There’s 12 of us - me, siblings, cousins.

Age range 39 - 14.

5 of us have children.

2 are experiencing serious fertility issues.

1 is gay with zero interest in children.

4 are under 18.

prepared101 · 16/08/2022 19:46

I think it's far less unlikely that they are all heterosexual than that they all have children!

LondonQueen · 16/08/2022 19:48

Most people choose to have children, don't think it's anything to do with being royal.

MangyInseam · 16/08/2022 19:49

I don't think it's that weird.

There are 10 adults in my sibling/cousin generation in my family. Two don't have children - one divorced and remained single afterwards, and the other is autistic and has never had a long term relationship.

Most people want children.

I think that's odd too actually. Most people I know have children, but I do know a few who don't. I know/have known maybe three to five people and couples at any one time who have no children. Mostly just didn't/don't want them, but a few couldn't have them.

MangyInseam · 16/08/2022 19:51

I also think that sometimes because of television and films, we get the idea that being without children is a lot more common than it really is. A lot of tv shows are completely unrealistic on that score because they want the characters to be relatively free for whatever plot points they want to introduce. (Similarly there are a lot of orphans in children's literature.)

GrouchyKiwi · 16/08/2022 19:51

I have 41 cousins. Of those who are partnered up (all but 3), all have children bar two couples, and of those one couple would like to but are having fertility struggles. So in my experience, the Windsor cousins are fairly typical in this respect.

HerRoyalNotness · 16/08/2022 19:51

I wouldn’t say it’s unusual.

Out of 12 aunts/uncles only 2 didn’t have children. One died too young and the other is has special needs.

i think I’ve met one couple in my life who chose not to have children as the husband was a carrier of a genetic disease. And another older couple who didn’t have them but I don’t know the reason

HerRoyalNotness · 16/08/2022 19:53

Of my cousins (26) all of us have children and the older children of those are starting to have them now.

Vikinga · 16/08/2022 19:53

Most people I know have children. Some are childless because they didn't find someone to have kids with, the ones who struggled with fertility either got pregnant with help or adopted and I think only one of my friends is childless by choice.

J0y · 16/08/2022 19:55

I think 80% of women have a child not sure about men. So that's zara, beatrice, eugenie yes and Louise no or not yet.

I dont think a royal would be judged for not having children so long as they aren't a direct heir.

ILoveShula · 16/08/2022 19:56

Not RTFT but at least one of her adult grandchildren doesn't have children.

One of her children and spouse (allegedly) had children via IVF.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/08/2022 19:57

I guess money helps, limited career options, maybe some expectations.

Of cousins, Aunt 1 has two adult kids, one has one baby. Aunt 2 has two adult kids, seven kids between them. Aunt 3 has two kids, one has one baby, Aunt 4 has two adult kids, six kids between them, my parent has two kids, seven kids between us. So I guess the "adult grandkids generation" swings from none to four.

All my Uni mates have kids. Of my school friends, half haven't.

Louise or James may buck the trend

megletthesecond · 16/08/2022 19:58

They have no money worries, good medical care, staff and time. It must make having children quite nice.

I have teens, enough said

SwedeCarrotLime · 16/08/2022 19:59

You presumably aren’t a member of a patrilineal dynasty though, OP.

Are you counting Louise as adult?
