To ask why all of the Queen's adult grandchildren have chosen to have kids?

itsbeen4minutes · 16/08/2022 18:47

Out of the Queen's 6 adult grandchildren, all of them have had children. AIBU to ask whether this is normal in terms of pretty every member of a family having chosen to have kids?

I have chosen to not have children so feel like if I was a member of the royal family I would be judged quite a bit on my choice to remain childfree.

The Queens adult grandchildren (apart from William) are not paid for from the civil list. They support themselves. They don't have bodyguards unless they are carrying out royal duties. They probably had children because they wanted them, like the rest of us

diamondpony80 · 16/08/2022 19:11

All my family and all DHs have kids. Can’t think of anyone who doesn’t. All my friends do too (except one who is gay). It’s not uncommon.

Evenstar · 16/08/2022 19:12

My maternal grandmother had 17 grandchildren, one is younger and has no children yet, 2 are childless not through choice and 2 more have adopted, and 13 of us had birth children and DGM had 18 great grandchildren before she passed away. On the paternal side there were 16 grandchildren and I believe most of them had children, we lost touch with some cousins on that side.

I think there are probably still more people who have children than not, but I do feel that is changing or certainly the age people become parents is rising and they are having less children I only have one friend with a child under 30 who expects her first grandchild in the autumn and I am 58 this year.

For the Royal Family they probably have less financial difficulties in starting a family.

Sittingonabench · 16/08/2022 19:12

It really must be pocketed as so many say they don’t know many people choosing not to have children however in my family and social group there are only a small handful who have children (generally two). The others all have dogs.

Herewegoagain84 · 16/08/2022 19:13

They chose to have children? Their decision doesn’t impact on yours and vice versa.

downfield · 16/08/2022 19:13

I'm in London & know lots of women who have not had children

SpilltheTea · 16/08/2022 19:13

They get nannies

Evenstar · 16/08/2022 19:13

Actually that adds up to 18 grandchildren which is correct. Oh for an edit button!

Yet or never? Are they all career women?

They are all financially subsidised. Whether that’s through fame which allows them opportunities or inherited property and positions. None of them is ‘self made’ and they don’t support themselves. Not like we real people do.

What's a 'career woman'?

Is it the female version of a 'career man'?

About 18% of women in the UK choose not to have children. I suspect that occurs in social and geographically pockets rather than evenly spread across the population.

This is my guess too. A high proportion of my relatives and friends have no children, so I think we are one of those 'pockets' you suggest, but I'm aware that's unusual on a population level.

lioncitygirl · 16/08/2022 19:16

I have 23 cousins - all of us have children. My mum had 11 siblings - all of them had children

TheLeadbetterLife · 16/08/2022 19:17

These people are raised in an environment where the utter madness of a hereditary monarchy presumably makes sense.

Therefore their only job is to have children.

HighlandPony · 16/08/2022 19:18

Pretty normal both in my family and in my area. There’s nothing wrong with it either though I don’t believe the taxpayers should be funding rich royals

On my dAds side i have about 20 cousins all but 5 don't have kids and they have only recently got married etc or are due to so likely to have them if can , on my mums side 6 cousins , 4 have kids and 2 don't yet but want them
I know only a few people who have actually choose not to have children

downfield · 16/08/2022 19:19

@Hellocatshome

Both, some who are older so couldn't have them now, some still age wise ok but don't want them & some who don't want them currently but may have one in a few years, some due to careers.
My sister & sister in law aren't interested in having them, don't want the lifestyle change which does actually make a lot of sense!

Dahlietta · 16/08/2022 19:20

I don't think it's unusual at all really. They're generally quite traditional people anyway, but having children is very much the norm across most of society.

Mumspair1 · 16/08/2022 19:21

That is quite weird and odd question with no point really? Why do most people do it? All the gc in my own family went on to have kids.

garlictwist · 16/08/2022 19:21

BooksAndHooks · 16/08/2022 18:49

I would say it is more common than not. Aside from people who want children but have been unable to have them I don’t think I have come across anyone who has chosen to not have children in our wider family or friends.

That's odd because I would say the number of people I know who have chosen to have children is fewer than those that have decided not to. And I'm 40 now so most people would have done it by now if they wanted. I am child free and it's definitely the norm in my circle.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 16/08/2022 19:23

My grandad has 42 first cousins. Each child having children is entirely standard.

Really? Not one person who doesn't have children? That is unusual.

Out of DD and her cousins (6 in total) only one has children. At least three of them have no intention of ever having children. I don't think it is unusual or odd not to want children.

Cas112 · 16/08/2022 19:24

I don't think it anything to do with being in the royal family Confused majority of people want kids it's only a smaller proportion of people who don't.

More than likely all 6 of them wanted children

Antarcticant · 16/08/2022 19:24

As a childfree woman, it's quite refreshing to hear the question asked, why do they have children. Normally, people ask why you/someone else doesn't!
