To think it's not unusual for a woman to have size 42+ feet ...

... and yet so many shoe ranges only go up to a size 41! Why is that? I've had problems buying shoes ever since my early teens. I rarely own more than 2 pairs at any one time, because finding shoes that I like, and which fit, is so difficult. If size 42 (or more) isn't unusual, then there must be a big untapped market out there.

I love shoes, I drool over them in shop windows. But when I go to look at these pretty, pretty shoes and work my way through to the larger sizes...they’ve morphed into boats. All the prettiness has gone and they’re suddenly longboats. As well as the 41= uk 8 annoyance, why can’t manufacturers size up the detail so there’s still the proportions of the smaller size, but in a larger size? It’s deeply depressing.

If I could change just one thing, it would be to go down a couple of shoe sizes in length and width! Then I’d be spared the misery and boredom of shoe shopping

LidFlipper · 16/08/2022 19:08

I used to work in shoe shop 10 years ago and we always had loads of 8’s left over so it wasn’t very usual back then.

i have the wide fit problem. My feet are a size 6 but they’re so wide and I can never get shoes to fit comfortably

I didn't realise women could wear a size 8!

Neither do Converse. 🙄

Dd1 wanted Converse for her prom, some lovely styles / designs in ladies only to be told that the biggest size is 7. She ended up with men's (8 / 41.5) but obviously the choice was dull. Thankfully for her she has inherited my deep hatred of shoe shopping and all that it entails so it is rarely an issue.

I'm a 6, so obviously not an issue for me. I knew we would be here though, when she was little she would outgrow shoes within weeks. I think the youngest will be the same, 10 years old and a size 5 already.

I am 44 and DD1 (12) is 43 and DD2 (11) is 42 - buying shoes has always been a pain in the arse - no choice, ruinously expensive but now trying to buy school shoes is so stressful and depressing. It is so much better than it was but I’d line to just be able to go to a shoe shop and try shoes on like everyone else…

I feel your pain.
I've been an 8/9 since I was 13 (80s), DS is a 13, which seems to be the same place in mens shoes - just outside of normal range. My DM and DSis have both taken me shoe shopping in the past to try and smarten me up, and both gave up in frustration!

I'm a 7.5. Only M&S seem to stock this half size. But at least generally I can wear a 41 even if it's too big, while 40 is too small.

This won't help much (unless you win the Lottery) but Jimmy Choo and Prada both do 40.5 / 7.5.

CuteSnowpeoples · 16/08/2022 19:12

I'm a Size 8/9 but I'm only 5ft tall. My feet have got wider with age so I find it hard to get shoes to fit! I sometimes end up buying men's shoes now as I get frustrated when they never have my size in the ladies!

cptartapp · 16/08/2022 19:13

I used to work in a shoe shop early 1990's and we were always told the European sizing is smaller. So although 41 is marketed as an 8, it's really nearer to a 7.5. We had a range called ' Tall and small' and this is where the 42 and even 43 sizes were hidden. We sold plenty. It was extremely rare to get those sizes in the standard ranges.
I'm 5ft 9" and a 41 and they generally fit fine.

PragmaticWench · 16/08/2022 19:14

FuzzyPuffling · 16/08/2022 18:28

Have you considered wearing men's shoes?

No, me neither. I may have big feet but I'm still a woman and would like to wear what other women wear, thank you very much

Exactly, and men's shoes are wider so don't fit, even with trainers they're just too wide.

I'm a 9, definitely a 43 but SO many places try and fob off a 42 as a 9, which it isn't.

Onelittlepiglet · 16/08/2022 19:15

I’m a size 42 (it also annoys me when shops say size 8 but it’s a 41!). My daughter is 11 with size 40 feet so will probably end up bigger than me!

I know lots of women who have size 42 or bigger feet. I think it’s more common than when I was young. I wish that there was more choice for shoes in our size, although it’s definitely better than it was.

FluffyFluffMonster · 16/08/2022 19:17

Wow this is confusing. I'm a size 41 which I always thought was an 8 so I'm actually a 7?

Wouldloveanother · 16/08/2022 19:17

Just had a look and there’s 287 styles of shoe in size 9 on the new look website. Is it really that bad?

BruisedPear · 16/08/2022 19:18

I wear a 42 and have found there’s way more choice now than in my teens.
I agree with the PP even louboutin and other luxury brands do 42’s and even 43’s in some styles, have a look on Net-a-Porter.

Next, ASOS, Mango, H&M all do a 42 as well. I’ve never struggled to find a shoe in my size for any occasion.

I’m a 42 and Zalando have shoes in that size. But, yes, there is a gap in the market for us ladies with large feet.

GrammarTeacher · 16/08/2022 19:24

42 here as well.
I can remember vividly being told a local Clark's didn't have girls schools shoes in anything larger than a 5 because girls' feet didn't get bigger. I was right there. Being 13 and having bigger feet. This was the 90s. Average height has gone up since and yet still the range hasn't particularly improved. I would like nice, girly shoes sometimes. Without squeezing into a 41 masquerading as an 8 (when I first went up to 8 they were ALWAYS 42 - don't know what happened there).

birdglasspen2 · 16/08/2022 19:24

Men who dress as woman have certain shoe sites :-D Not always what I'd want to wear but surely the market is widening, between woman with size 42 and men with 42 who want woman's shoes............
Anyway I hear you it's hard getting shoes. I wear wellies!

BestIsWest · 16/08/2022 19:25

It’s definitely more common now. I’m 59 and remember how hard it was to find anything much fashionable over a 7 in the 70s and early 80s. It did begin to change in the mid 80s though I bought all my shoes from M&S/Next for years as they were pretty much the only ones who stocked 8s.

Brideandprejudice · 16/08/2022 19:27

A size 8 is a 41

Converse definitely go up to at least a 9, ASOS have them if your DD is still after some. (Not suggesting she has to have the pink btw!)

To think it's not unusual for a woman to have size 42+ feet ...
hennaoj · 16/08/2022 19:30

5ft 9 1/2 and size 8/9, depending on the brand. Trying to find large, narrow fitting womens shoes is almost impossible. For some reason, larger feet = wider. My 8 year old son is in size 5 1/2 adults, is autistic and can't tie laces!

Gaveitall · 16/08/2022 19:32

I’m a size 9. I’m 5’9” tall and in proportion.

I have been told by a top class London shoe purveyor that I have “a long aristocratic foot.” I was much flattered.

Moving swiftly on, I don’t have problems finding a unisex trainer (currently Puma classic) but do struggle with a pretty kitten heel when I need one.

Hotter are a bit old fashioned but I do buy their sandals in a 9. I also visit a lovely but expensive shop in Salisbury who stock large sizes beyond 9. (Not sure if they’re still trading.)

I sometimes wonder how transgender M to F manage to get nice feminine pretty shoes that are not black? If they have a masculine bone structure it must be challenging for them?

Glad to find some more “Big Foot” ladies. It can be a disappointing path to tread!

Flutterbybudget · 16/08/2022 19:34

None of my family have feet smaller than a 42
that includes my mum, my MIL, my sister, my SIL and both my daughters.
I wear a 43/9, and my daughter is a 10/11 (think that might be a 45/46?)
really hard to find “nice” shoes/ heels to wear with dresses, stopping short of going to a shop for transvestites.

LilacPoppy · 16/08/2022 19:34

I'm 5'8"" and my size 42 feet are in proportion with my height. no that's not in proportion at all. If you were 5"" plus yes.
