To think it's not unusual for a woman to have size 42+ feet ...

... and yet so many shoe ranges only go up to a size 41! Why is that? I've had problems buying shoes ever since my early teens. I rarely own more than 2 pairs at any one time, because finding shoes that I like, and which fit, is so difficult. If size 42 (or more) isn't unusual, then there must be a big untapped market out there.

5'8" here and a size 43/44, made worse by the fact that I have very slender feet and calves and narrow ankles. Shoe manufacturers seem to think that if you have big feet, you must be a massive heifer.

I tend to do very well in trainer sales, not so much if I'm just looking for 'normal' shoes.

hedgehogger1 · 16/08/2022 20:05

Same here. It's so annoying. And when they do go big enough they're really wide and mine are narrow

JobQuandree · 16/08/2022 20:07

I have size 8 feet and probably around 100 pairs of shoes, honestly never had a problem finding them at all, I didn't even think it was unusual to have size 8 feet.

JaceLancs · 16/08/2022 20:09

DP is a size 14 in shoes or 15 for boots or trainers
just to make things worse he doesn’t have wide feet so has to wear very thick socks with everything

Madcats · 16/08/2022 20:10

Shamelessly jumping on here as my 165cm (and I think she's stopped growing) DD((15) is a 41.

It was a complete fluke (as we were trying on sports shoes in a terrestrial shop) that I discovered that ASICS mens shoe sizes at "41" are a lot longer.

I didn't realise women could wear a size 8!

What??? Confused

Yep.

I ride competitively and have had to have long leather boots made to measure at enormous cost, because anything that fitted my foot length was far too wide on the foot bed and calf.

Sudename · 16/08/2022 18:42

I'm 5ft 8 and wear a 42. My pet hate is when you ask a shop assistant for a size 8 and they bring you a 7 suggesting you try them!

Oh god this is so annoying. Or they bring a 7.5. If I could fit in a 7.5 I wouldn’t be a size 8 (42) would I!🙄

Twizbe · 16/08/2022 20:12

Ah story of my life.

School shoe shopping in my teens drove me to tears.

Every time I find a shop that stocked size 9/42 they went bust (Dolcis, Barrats etc)

I find it a lot easier now with the internet and I get a lot from next as I can order, try on when I collect in store and return there and then if they don't fit. Still not ideal.

What kind of witless comment is that?

Tigerstripes1 · 16/08/2022 20:15

I've seen lots of 8s in primark!

I'm the opposite, tall with size 4 feet. Its any wonder I can stand without toppling over tbf!

ColonelCarter · 16/08/2022 20:15

I don't know anyone with feet larger than a 7. I'm 5ft 8 and a size 6, my SIL is 5ft 11 and a size 5!

I suspect that an increase in larger female style shoes may be the only benefit of the trans movement!

PeloAddict · 16/08/2022 20:16

AutumnH · 16/08/2022 18:40

I'm a 7.5. Only M&S seem to stock this half size. But at least generally I can wear a 41 even if it's too big, while 40 is too small.

Same. I'm sure 41 was always a 7 and 42 was an 8
If I get a 41 it fits, but if it's only labelled a 7 it's sometimes too small so I have to check size guides
I'm 5ft 10 with huge boobs so the feet are needed to stop me from falling forwards Grin

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 16/08/2022 20:16

Fellow Bigfoot here - 5.10 and size 8 ( def 42 not a 41 for me). Like others, the only ‘fashion’ shoes in the teen years were from Lilley and Skinner’s ‘Tall’ range and getting a pair of shoes that fitted for my wedding was difficult and involved having them stretched at a cobblers. My shoes now are from Clarks, M and S, Evans, Next, some of the supermarkets, L.K. Bennett in my pre-children years and Vinted, where you can sometimes get brand new shoes with the tags on. It is my least favourite part of style and fashion and I always have to buy occasion-wear with the shoes I’ve already got in mind, or I’m pretty unlikely to be able to buy any to match. I also multibuy in different colours if I find ones I like that fit well.

Well clearly based on this thread your last statement is bullshit!

BrokeAsABone · 16/08/2022 20:20

I'm 42 and live in Skechers 8..sometimes I buy the 9 and wash them then tumble dry to get them the perfect size. Joe Browns also fit but wouldn't trust any other brand but these two.

BrioNotBiro · 16/08/2022 20:21

I'm 5'8" and take a 9/43 and have a terrible problem. It's got worse as I've got older as one's feet spread, I think.

It hacks me off that a 5'8''man would have no problem getting an 9.

It's when the 8 is a 41 that the problem arises. Some of us have 42 feet and so most 8s are too small.

tulips27 · 16/08/2022 20:22

I think it's silly to say you can't imagine larger sizes. I'm 5'6 with 391/2 shoe, plenty of women are taller than me, absolutely loads in fact (I don't believe all this about the average height is 5'4, I feel the same height or a touch on the short side these days, that data must be out of date). So their feet will often be bigger too.

Christinatheastonishing · 16/08/2022 20:23

Size 42/43 here, I own over 50 pairs of shoes (and that's after a huge clean out) so not finding it difficult to source things that fit and none are from the men's department.

The internet is your friend! I mostly shop online from M&S, Next, ASOS and Amazon. American brands tend to go to US11 or 12 which is UK9-10. Duo Boots is another. Cinderella Shoes in Ireland stocks very large sizes.

Tiredmum12389 · 16/08/2022 20:23

Also 5ft 8 and a size 42. Reiker boots have made me very happy this past winter. Proper boots that look nice and sctually fit. And every time in every boot in a size 42. At last !!!!

Not really, if they are made to fit men's feet. ☹️

watingroom2 · 16/08/2022 20:25

I'm not convinced shoe size and height are as closely matched as people think - I know people 4 inches taller than me - with shoe sizes 2 lower..

MumChats · 16/08/2022 20:26

I think a 41 is an 8! I consider myself to be a size 41 and a size 8...a 40 is too small for me. I do think it's unusual though, I don't know many people with feet as big as mine. I'm sure some next shoes go up to 42 (even 43?!)

museumum · 16/08/2022 20:30

The vast majority of U.K. women are 4-7. A couple of decades ago most 4/5 now more 6.
Im a 3 which is similar to an 8 in that most “normal” shops have some but not all styles. Years ago I used to work in Saxons “small and tall” dept where we did 1-3 and 8-10 in a selection of the main range styles.
