To not include DD on hotel room booking?

Looking to book a two night trip to York for Christmas and both air b and b apartments as well as hotels (without including breakfast) are charging around £75 and up extra if I include DD on the booking (she is 2).

The size of the room doesn't change. What is with the additional cost? Its not cheaper whether its 1 or 2 adults, but only if you add a child onto the booking.

I am half tempted to just book for two adults for the air b and b property I am looking at - its self service collection for the keys so they wouldn't know anyway?

Theoretically what happens if you book a room and then have a baby - do you call and get charged more?

(I realise for insurance/fire purposes they need to know occupants per room).

£75 for a 2 year old for one night is extortionate. Go Premier Inn is my advice. Why people are so enamoured of Air B & Bs is beyond me to be honest.

I booked an Air BNB in a ridiculously expensive city at a crazy time. For a special occasion we need to be in that city at that time. the cheapest available was over 300 for me and my 14yr old for 2 nights. Much much cheaper BTW than any of the chain hotels which were all over 500.
It happened to be 2 bedrooms.
By a lucky chance my sister and her family (2 adults and 2 children) can join us for one of the nights.
Emailed the host asking if they would fit and they were lovely saying actually iwith the sofa bed yes. But to update the air bnb booking.
Unable to do so for only one night. The booking has now been increased by a whopping 185 quid. For the same place for the same time. Obviously no breakfast.

I have to say I’m a bit surprised at these responses.

I had a thread the other day where me and DH were meant to be travelling 350 miles to the Scottish highlands for my brother’s wedding but our childcare fell through and brother was v strict on the no children policy.
Lots of people telling me to take kids and leave DH in the hotel room with them. I said I don’t have a family room and I massively got my arse handed to me for not being willing to sneak 2 small children into a double room in an independent hotel. But apparently OP wanting to do the same with 1 child is ‘entitled’

Which leads me to believe it’s either a coincidence we had polar opposite replies…..or posters just like to stick the boot in whatever the OP says

I’m inclined to believe the latter

@Butteryflakycrust83, just be HONEST or book somewhere else! People like you are the reason MANY hosts use cameras! Some of you lie too much! If a host says extra for kids, then it is extra for kids! Either pay it or find somewhere else to rent. Just FOLLOW THE RULES! What is so hard about that for some people? You don't have to like the rules, but just follow them or book another place! It is SO simple!

But it's their property. They are not a public service so they can change what they like. If you think you are being "ripped off" you should book somewhere else

I didn't go there again, we found a much nicer place.

Anyway sometimes you don't know you have been ripped off until after the event. We had seen this particular place from the outside and thought it looked nice, but it categorically wasn't.

I totally agree. Premier Inns aren't the bargain they were before covid, but you know what you are getting, no nonsense about having to strip beds, do cleaning or take rubbish to the tip etc.

I do like normal B&Bs but you have to choose carefully.
