To not include DD on hotel room booking?

Butteryflakycrust83 · 15/08/2022 14:22

Looking to book a two night trip to York for Christmas and both air b and b apartments as well as hotels (without including breakfast) are charging around £75 and up extra if I include DD on the booking (she is 2).

The size of the room doesn't change. What is with the additional cost? Its not cheaper whether its 1 or 2 adults, but only if you add a child onto the booking.

I am half tempted to just book for two adults for the air b and b property I am looking at - its self service collection for the keys so they wouldn't know anyway?

Theoretically what happens if you book a room and then have a baby - do you call and get charged more?

(I realise for insurance/fire purposes they need to know occupants per room).

I'd just book it and not say anything

TheLion · 15/08/2022 16:25

£75 for a 2 year old is nuts. I agree that hotels are a much better bet.

What do all the "but what if there's a fire" people actually think would happen? Do you really think the firefighters hang around waiting for the air BnB owner to hand over the list of who is staying there before they start clearing the building/rescuing people?! Even if that was the case the firefighters would presumably notice the smears of poo and detritus that these same "but what if there's a fire" people seem to think that children leave in their wake!

In those circumstances an extra bed would be used for which they are charging. If you don't like it then find somewhere else.

Nope, that’s not the reason. They need to change both beds anyway. The two adults could be using a bed each.

MicksMate · 15/08/2022 16:32

With a room with 2 double beds I would specify you'd like them both made up. Otherwise they may just do the one if there are only 2 of you. IME if you book it "underoccupying" you can't assume all the beds will be available for you to sleep in.

I am thinking of booking, calling in advance to tell them I am bringing DD and that we wont require a bigger room/cot.

We stayed at a lovely hotel last year for a wedding where they explained the room was too small for a travel cot, but when I said DH would kip on the floor (cant deal with snoring) they gave him extra bedding! Really accommodating.

Too small for a travel cot but enough space for an adult man to sleep on the floor (which apparently eliminates snoring)? Seems unlikely.

I have never in my life arrived at a hotel room with two beds and only one being made up, as that would mean they presume both adults are going to sleep together?

Am glad you're sorted now OP and sorry for the derail but @LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet I read your thread and the heat you took! Was there any fall out after the wedding?

WELL!!

No fall out from me but my brother had a massive tantrum on the morning of the wedding over, I think, a buttonhole or something. He threw something and screamed at my mum, told her to piss off. So she stormed out the hotel and refused to go back in. I spent my morning on the phone mediating between the two and trying to get him to apologise and persuade my mum to go back in as she was threatening not to go to the wedding. She did in the end, but it was apparently awkward AF all day! It’s almost like my brother is the dick I knew he was🧐It actually really made me wish I’d just got on that bloody train so I could see it first hand🤣🤣

I saw your thread!

So glad you stuck to your guns though - imagine if you had listened to the posters demanding you drag everyone up there only to watch your brother act like a giant ungrateful arsehole.

This.

Seriously. Don't take the piss.

Do you actually think firefighters are using some kind of list and checking people off it?
Do you really think a hotel ever actually knows who is there and who isn't? What do you think is happening in a hotel fire?

Such illogical nonsense!

Caspianberg · 15/08/2022 16:44

Please don’t do this. It’s just plain rude.
we rent, it sleeps 4. I charge the same if it’s 1 or 4, so the cost is irrelevant.

I have to register each guest who’s staying with local authorities (not uk). There’s a tourist tax payable. A 2 year old I still have to legally register even though their tourist tax amount is then €0. I can receive a huge fine for not doing this.
I would also double make sure previous guests haven’t left things like matches outside near bbq, or similar if a child is on the premises. I also leave toys and snacks for kids, but that’s would just be your loss.

I also have a 2 year old. I know it’s annoying. But I would always just contact them directly if it’s a double hotel room and say we can co sleep with them if it’s ok to bring. And then just suck up any additional fee.

GraceandMolly · 15/08/2022 16:45

If you add a child on the search it will look for rooms with double bed and a single hence the cost. If you don’t need the extra bed, contact the place directly. We’ve done this many times and they might charge an extra £10 but that’s it.

But why would people lie to you if its a flat fee for the same space? This is my point.

It feels unfair to charge such a large amount for a tiny person who isn't needing bedding/towels etc. The same way that single adults pay the price for double occupancy.

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 15/08/2022 16:55

They don’t lie, I haven’t had any problems.
Im saying why people need to know. I need to know for tourist tax, insurance, safety.

So don’t make a booking on air B and B and sneak a child in. Either contact them directly and explain, and either they keep cost the same or charge the extra as some people do. Or book elsewhere.

Mine sleeps ‘4’. But if someone contacted me and said oh I have 3 year old twins who will share a bed, 7 year old, 2 adults and a baby 2 months who will sleep in travel cot. I would happily let them stay as they are happy with bed arrangements, they have asked, and I can sort tourist tax properly. If they turned up with 6 without asking me and tried to sneak in, I would refuse booking.

eggandonion · 15/08/2022 16:57

My husband always calls hotels and gets more flexibility in terms of rooms and beds, and specifies room at back or front or whatever.
My neighbour adores premier inn, and bases holidays on where they are available.

Really - late at night, dark and thick smoke. I'm notified by the emergency services that the cottage is on fire and asked how many guests I have. I reply 2 adults.

The emergency services look for and rescue the 2 adults who may be unconscious. No one thinks to look for a baby as no one knows it's there. That delay may well be the difference between life and death.

This was the original reason for those "baby on board" stickers on cars - to make sure a baby/toddler was not overlocked in the event of an accident.

ittakes2 · 15/08/2022 17:05

The entitlement on this thread is shocking - the owners don’t owe you a cheaper priced property. You don’t get to decide a price you think is fair and pay it. They offer a price and you decide if you want to pay it or go elsewhere.

Insurance, a bin full of nappies? Shitty surfaces? Noise to other neighbours? Scribbling on walls? This is why my parents don't take kids.

Your parents dont trust you to behave?

That's a cottage. Not a hotel. Completely different scenario. (plus the baby would be in the bed with the parents or in the cot, and easily spotted by the firefighters who would check every room anway, obviously).

BTW, thats not the reason for Baby on Board stickers, it doesn't even make sense.

Twawmyarse · 15/08/2022 17:08

People on here are being ridiculous.

The extra charge is for a cot bed/pullout. If you're happy for her to sleep with you don't put her on the booking.

When I got married we stayed in a very expensive hotel and several people booked double rooms but squeezed an extra person/child in - the hotel couldn't have cared less, it's completely normal. They are charging for the room - not the amount of people in it.

Extra cleaning etc? Don't be so stoopid.

Elphame · 15/08/2022 17:10

"plus the baby would be in the bed with the parents or in the cot, and easily spotted by the firefighters who would check every room anway, obviously)"

Not necessarily - it's a 3 bed cottage. Many small children sleep better in a different room and in heavy smoke could easily be overlooked

But you do you. As I said they would be required to leave if they tried it with me.

I always forget that Premier Inn dont show up on booking.com - thank you!

Blossom St North in York. Lovely Premier Inn. Fantastic location and there is a lovely Italian cafe round the corner for breakfast.

Celticstranger · 15/08/2022 17:20

They don't have to justify the cost to you. You either like it and pay up or you don't and you take your business elsewhere. If there is a security camera above the door or on the door bell then you are going to be found out anyway.

SheeWeee · 15/08/2022 17:22

You know when people stay in a hotel room and bring someone back with them that they meet while out....do they go down to the reception beforehand (or the next morning) and pay for the extra guest?
