To not include DD on hotel room booking?

Butteryflakycrust83 · 15/08/2022 14:22

Looking to book a two night trip to York for Christmas and both air b and b apartments as well as hotels (without including breakfast) are charging around £75 and up extra if I include DD on the booking (she is 2).

The size of the room doesn't change. What is with the additional cost? Its not cheaper whether its 1 or 2 adults, but only if you add a child onto the booking.

I am half tempted to just book for two adults for the air b and b property I am looking at - its self service collection for the keys so they wouldn't know anyway?

Theoretically what happens if you book a room and then have a baby - do you call and get charged more?

(I realise for insurance/fire purposes they need to know occupants per room).

And OP chooses to ignore this.

Who said I was going to ignore it?

But as others have pointed out, its not like the fire brigade are rescuing people based on a list. What about people who are still out for the night? What about people who bring home a guest after a night out?

Agree with a PP - they're trying to discourage families with young children. It's obvious. . . . to most of us. 😂

My point is - the room should be a flat fee with a maximum number of occupants depending on the beds surely?

A room with two double beds? The price is the price for up to 4 occupants.

Not - two adults £100, but two adults 1 child - £175.

Not your decision.
Thats their Ts and Cs so book with them or don’t

I just tried to book a hotel for the 3 of us. 2 adults and a nearly 2 year old. £205. For 2 is was £104. They were charging for a 1 double and 1 single. For a 1 year old. That's ridiculous.

Christ thats a lot!

I recommend calling the hotel for clarification.

It’s not up to you to decide what is a reasonable price or conditions of rental. The owner decides that… and then it’s up to you to accept or decline, not to defraud the system

It is actually up to us as customers to decide what is reasonable- if lots of potential customers decline to purchase it at that price then the price will either fall or the service will disappear. And conditions of rental have to be reasonable by law when you are dealing with individual consumers.

Ylvamoon · 15/08/2022 15:53

Bed, sheets, towels & breakfast. Someone has to supply & clean these things!

Jaxhog · 15/08/2022 15:53

mattressspring · 15/08/2022 14:48

It doesn't matter why the price is more. That's what the owners have decided. It's up to you to decide whether or not you want to pay it. It's absolutely not ok for you to lie because you can't justify their pricing model.

This. If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

Definitelymabel · 15/08/2022 15:54

Just take her. We've been to all sorts of places and not declared a child or two, or sometimes a dog, occasionally an extra car or awning on a campsite, etc.

All big company places mind you. The check in staff don't give a crap. I wouldn't try it with privately owned.

Why is a 10m square camping pitch £30 a night for a 10m square tent, but a 5m square tent with a 2m awning is £38 a night? Fuck them.

rainbowmilk · 15/08/2022 15:56

Yes of course being told that it’s not great to defraud a hotel to get your own way is exactly like the struggle Mary had trying to find somewhere to give birth. My eyes can’t roll any harder.

I think this is your answer OP - what if there were a fire and they no one knew DD was there?

This old bullshit again! WTF are you thinking of when you write this nonsense?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/08/2022 16:03

I called one of the hotels and they have said I can pay for the large double room (as priced for two adults) as long as I don't need an a cot (which I dont)

Sounds like the perfect solution, OP - and you won't be faced witth a "surprise list" of jobs the owner expects you to do before leaving

Like the post where the guests were expected to take all of their rubbish home WITH them.....

I recently booked a twin room for me and 16yo DD, if I put 2 adults it was one price - if I put 1 adult 1 child (child was up to 17 btw!) they only showed family rooms with 3 beds, even though there were only 2 of us! So I just put DD in as an adult.

This.

Seriously. Don't take the piss.

GurningGolfer · 15/08/2022 16:12

Premier inn every time. Bloody amazing places.

LaughingCat · 15/08/2022 16:13

I always book for one adult, but there’s usually two of us staying there. I’d never thought about it before. Seems odd that it doesn’t cost more to add an adult but it does to add a child.

I’d agree that they’d need to know for towels/travel cots etc but that seems like an unfair child tax.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 15/08/2022 16:15

I never have the balls to do this but honestly £75 for a 2yo is insane, if you have the guts sneak her in

Other hotels are available. You are free to book elsewhere.

Some don't want children staying and this is a way to discourage parents.

OldFan · 15/08/2022 16:16

Don't do things people don't agree to in their homes, and cheat people of money they're charging for something. That's not ok.

There probably are extra costs to them of kids- they can charge what they want anyway.

Do the right thing- if you don't like what they're charging for what you want then don't choose them, choose somewhere else (but don't decieve them and cheat them either.)

OldFan · 15/08/2022 16:19

@Rosehugger The owners aren't doing anything illegal.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 15/08/2022 16:21

I had a friend who booked and paid for a 4 person room but really they needed a room for 5.

They were asked to leave the hotel when they were caught and had to find another hotel which was double the amount of the original booking.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 15/08/2022 16:21

I have to say I’m a bit surprised at these responses.

I had a thread the other day where me and DH were meant to be travelling 350 miles to the Scottish highlands for my brother’s wedding but our childcare fell through and brother was v strict on the no children policy.
Lots of people telling me to take kids and leave DH in the hotel room with them. I said I don’t have a family room and I massively got my arse handed to me for not being willing to sneak 2 small children into a double room in an independent hotel. But apparently OP wanting to do the same with 1 child is ‘entitled’

Which leads me to believe it’s either a coincidence we had polar opposite replies…..or posters just like to stick the boot in whatever the OP says

sweeetpotato · 15/08/2022 16:23

I wouldn't declare it but would be prepared to pay if asked.

If the child won't need their own bed or need a breakfast I'd not be offering to pay if I could get away with not paying.

Riverlee · 15/08/2022 16:23

The Piglets

I can recommend this place for York. We stayed there last year.

myrtleWilson · 15/08/2022 16:23

Am glad you're sorted now OP and sorry for the derail but @LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet I read your thread and the heat you took! Was there any fall out after the wedding?
