Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

I think peoppe should openly celebrate their achievements more 😁

Sometimes it's his tone. When he gets very serious something in his tone sometimes doesn't match and it sounds odd. I wonder if that is the issue some people have with him. He does give good advice. I have saved so much money thanks to his advice. It's very easily understandable as well so I shared it to foreign friend when need it because I knew they will get it even if their english isn't perfect (simple writing also works better with translators)

Zebedee55 · 18/08/2022 08:17

Yes, I don't like him much. Too much shouting, but he does try to help others.

JM helps herself.

I'm new to JM but I still don't really understand why she didn't try to sublet a room to reduce the rental cost

Maybe because she didn't actually need to? I think she could afford the rent just fine but she's obsessed with owning her own home and has a middle class view that someone like her shouldn't actually be paying rent, she should be paying a mortgage or maybe should just own a house outright. Her landlord grandfather left an estate of roughly £1.8 million and I think she feels entitled to a slice of that without actually doing anything for it.

Yes, I get that impression too.

When she refers to her percentage from book sales as "paltry" or "piteous" I wonder what she's comparing it to.

lot123 · 18/08/2022 08:31

I think it's this. He speaks really quickly which isn't a great idea when you're covering financial topics. I also gather he could be quite a hard taskmaster at work (in a shouty way on occasions.). But, credit to him, it's a great site.

So JM pays over 90% of her income on her rent but hasn't tried to find a way of reducing this? It seems slightly mad (appreciate she couldn't end the lease early).

JubileeTrifle · 18/08/2022 08:49

To me she reminds me of people I know who shop and then plead poverty. There’s lots of justification about buying things. I’ve seen her say she buys expensive things as an ‘investment’ to sell later if she needs (although doesn’t seem to have done that).

I could believe that, i saw an interview where he seemed beside himself with anger (when his name had been used or something. I forget exactly what it was, probably justified, but his reaction seemed a bit beyond).

But he definitely seems transparent and to have a strong sense of ethics, actively trying to make a difference.

Whereas JM seems to jump on the latest talking point and take credit for it as her own, half the time. She did a post about her enormous burden and how she's the only one trying to do anything, and it's like whuuut?!

Jonad · 18/08/2022 09:02

She says she’s stuck in the house but in other tweets she said it’s a rolling contract and she is going to stay for a good while yet? I know circumstances change but so does her story it seems!

Why not just not buy them and put the money into an ISA

She has a strange way of doing stuff to me.

JubileeTrifle · 18/08/2022 09:06

Well it’s bollocks. Obviously has an issue with spending and then justifying it.
I think if 10 years ago when she got her first book contract she had been sensible with money she would probably be quite well off with a nice house.

Even if it wasn't rolling contract you have options. Long leases have break clause, you can approach landlord and work on mutually satisfying outcome, eg -I will stay until you find new tenant and cover some of the extra costs with estate agents etc. as I am worried I will not be able to pay the rent soon.

Many options when you are not on rolling contract. Which if she is... Ffs..m

Jfc! Jack was on a rant about landlords with the just that they were all evil, should swap homes with their tenants, homes should be nationalised.
wow, just wow, at the double think.

Yep. Methinks someone is salty because they were left out of the will or expected a little bit of that cash to trickle down...

Do you have a source for the figure of £1.8 million?

Because the poster who claims she is worth £3 million hasn't come back to share their source.

These are big claims, it would be good to see the evidence.

JubileeTrifle · 18/08/2022 15:17

The £3 million is probably from one of those stupid websites that guess peoples net worth.

Grandads will is in public record though.

Can you share the link?

Neoncoral · 18/08/2022 15:45

The links to Grandads stuff is all on Google. To the official public record. Giving the figures as stated on here. It's public knowledge. However, not sure Mumsnet would like them posted on here? So you're possibly going to have to Google yourself. Easy to find with all the numbers.

houseonthehill · 18/08/2022 16:02

Was she selling the books herself/through a book distributor, or pointing people to retailers? If it was the former, she would get at least 40% of the £10.99.

I've googled and all I can see is endless Tattle threads. If Mumsnet are happy with endless criticisms and allegations, I can't see why on earth they'd object to some hard evidence. Please share it.

This is just speculation though.

It's very common for authors to get an advance, spend it, and then not get very much from sales because the advance included payment for a lot of sales in advance.

As I've said earlier in the thread, it's absolutely OK to question her actions and credibility, though I do question the motivations of attacks from some sources who have a go at anyone who raises the issue of poverty.

My concern is that people start repeating allegations as if they are truth without a shred of hard evidence. And If the evidence is out there, I'd like to see it so I can make up my own mind.

But so far, it's not being shared.

houseonthehill · 18/08/2022 16:20

That's true. But in the scenario I was describing, she would still be able to make 40% of the RRP at least (could be as high as 60%). If, as she suggests, she was in fact getting a per unit percentage of 7-10%, that would be added on top.

JubileeTrifle · 18/08/2022 16:20

There you go. It’s a matter of public record.

Today when someone asked about books for food banks she’s offering to sort them ‘for cost’ she’s reading the criticism people are picking up on now.

houseonthehill · 18/08/2022 16:28
  • *Today when someone asked about books for food banks she’s offering to sort them ‘for cost’

If she has been selling them direct, or via a distributor, no 'sorting' required. She sets the price and always has.
