Anyone else sick to death of the heat?

I know there have been numerous threads on this already but OMG, I cannot taking this sodding heat any more. I actually feel sick today because it's so oppressive and I can't get anything done around the house, which is like a furnace. Normally it's like this for a few days in the summer before cooling again, but it's been about six weeks of intense heat now in the south-east.

It's looking like tomorrow is the last of it thankfully - I sodding well hope so.

Anyone else completely fed-up?

Sometimes the temperatures can be low but the humidity makes it feel much hotter. We definitely had some very warm days in May and June.
We don't have the money for air con and have to use public transport. There is no real way to stay cool. Even wearing next to nothing, windows flung open to the max, cool shower and drinks have done nothing to cool me down, especially the nights. It's much easier to warm up then it is to cool down. I've also been sick several times and had thumping headaches. It's hideous and I cannot wait for cooler weather. Everyone I meet is saying the same thing. London and the South East have been horrendously hot for far too long now.

Kentucky83 · 15/08/2022 18:41

I have no problem with it. The only thing that's getting to me is that after all this lovely hot weather it's now looking likely that we will have rain on Sunday, which is DD's birthday. We're having kids round for a little party and if it rains it will be the 2nd year in a row I won't have been able to get them out in the garden (at my Mam's - having it there as we have no garden) after it being largely dry for weeks. Sod's Law!

Londoncallingme · 15/08/2022 18:45

Not much fun if you have Alopecia - a wig is sweaty itchy rashy hell in this heat.

sickofthisshite000 · 15/08/2022 18:59

STILL no rain in London. It is never going to rain here again.

It’s rubbish looking forward to winter no one ever said but I have had enough heat for a year!

CountryMouse22 · 15/08/2022 19:02

Isn't it odd that when you're boiling as we are recently you can't remember ever feeling cold. And vice versa.

I disagree, I find it easier to cool down than to warm up! I also don't have aircon, use public transport and I'm not finding it unbearable and hideous, nor are others I know, so you can't really just say oh, it's been horrendous for EVERYONE. I'd say there have been two weeks of actual hot weather, the rest just usual summer warm. I hope you feel more comfortable soon, it sounds like you're finding it very difficult and that can't be nice.

Why not just leave it off and to hell with what anyone thinks?

When I was having chemo my wig was nylon hell and I just left it off a lot of the time. You get glances of sympathy!

Also, has anyone noticed how you swell up in this weather? My bras and watch straps are tighter than usual. I wonder why that is?

DiddlyDoris · 15/08/2022 19:05

Yes.

And having hot summers for weeks every year is not normal, or nice, it's climate change in action.
Can't stand people referring to the 'fantastic' weather etc

baroqueandblue · 15/08/2022 19:08

@sickofthisshite000 was just coming on to complain about that! Earlier today the BBC weather app was showing rain all day tomorrow. Now, apparently, we'll be lucky if we get a few hours in the afternoon 🙄 Even this evening - right now in fact - it said would be rainy when I last checked, but that has been updated to possible shower between 8 and 9pm. I'm not much of a gambler, but if I had a house I'd bet it on not getting rain this evening 😡

So over this shit. As other posters have pointed out, here in the south east it has gone beyond a joke this year Hmm

You just need a plan for staying cool on public transport. Into my bag goes my roll on Dynamint cooler/peppermint spray, a portable fan, a bottle of chilled water and a frozen cool gel pad from the freezer. Obviously the latter two warm up during the time you’re out so for the return journey I buy a chilled drink.

With the above combination, I don’t really feel the heat too much.

OneTC · 15/08/2022 19:14

It's pretty cold now I'm gonna have to go indoors.

Some heavy clouds in the sky, it could rain but doesn't quite feel like it

Ah I feel for you! Dd was born in the heatwave of July 95. I thought great sunny birthdays for her. No! Many have been rainy and sometimes quite cold .

Rhaenys · 15/08/2022 19:24

We’ve only had 7 hot days here in total. Just had 5 in a row and it’s still pretty warm today. The 2 days we had in July weren’t too bad but this has been too much.

californiadreamer · 15/08/2022 19:27

So. Done.

tobee · 15/08/2022 19:30

I looked at the BBC weather app for my area earlier. It said: next hour, light rain and breeze. That didn't happen!

BunsyGirl · 15/08/2022 19:31

It’s raining…and my kids are dancing I’m around in the garden!!! Don’t think it’s going to last long though!!!

tobee · 15/08/2022 19:34

Dark Sky app says for my area: rain stopping in 45 minutes.

What rain? ConfusedHmmGrin

Where are you roughly?

Lovely13 · 15/08/2022 19:35

To all those who moan about British rainy, gloomy weather, be careful what you wish for. I’m like Dracula and melt in sunshine. Can’t wait for dull and overcast. And yes to rain. We’re in drought

BunsyGirl · 15/08/2022 19:38

@tobee Essex. Rain has stopped now!

I hear you that your body doesn’t tolerate heat well and that heatwaves cause problems but I do think those who don’t mind it dull and overcast have it easier overall in the U.K. as that is what we have the majority of the time in the U.K. I have always wished I was born in a Mediterranean climate with a short winter and more sunshine. I can’t move abroad due to illness and now Brexit so a stuck with the British climate. It’s the many days of grey and dull here that I struggle with, not cold per se. Bill Bryson (the American writer who lives in the U.K. and likes it) described the British sky as like living in a Tupperware box which I always thought was a very apt description of our sky for much of the year!

Suetwo · 15/08/2022 19:48

Oh god yes. I love you people. I have kept quiet because I didn't want to be called a moaner, but I HATE it. These past few weeks have been torture. I am in Essex, in one of the hottest parts of the island, and every time I think the heat has gone it comes roaring back.

At the weekend I even had heat exhaustion. On Saturday night I (stupidly) went for a jog. Didn't feel right after that. Then it was a horrific, sweaty night, like trying to sleep in a goddam sticky jungle. On the Sunday I had to take my niece to the park. After an hour in the sun, I vomited and nearly passed out. I then collapsed on the sofa about one in the afternoon and could barely move until midnight. I still feel sick and horrible and have barely eaten all day. And it's STILL humid. I really thought Monday would be the end, but it's going to be in the 20s here tonight. I would pay £50 for five hours of heavy rain and then a week of crunchy frost and bright sunshine.
