Partner wants me to pay for his car when he’s working full time

So me and my partner both work. I have my own business and we use universal credit to top up. Before my partner went back to work after being on the sick we were just on universal credit and my business was just starting. We used the universal credit to pay for his car and I have always used my money to pay for my own car. We live together and have a child and another one due very soon. So now my partner is back at work full time earning £850 a week, he still wants me to use the universal credit to pay for his car, this goes in my bank to top up my wages and Iv been using it for our child’s needs, food, and buying baby things. So now after giving him the money for his car (£420 a month finance) and £170 insurance, it’s joint insurance and it’s high because he got points for speeding twice in 1 year. I’m left with not enough to buy the bouncy chair, swing, or crib. However he’s got two accounts with a fair amount in each.

am I wrong for saying He should be paying for his car now he’s earning more than enough! We do drive each other’s cars and are on each other’s insurance. But I pay my own car and own insurance I’d never ask him to pay my insurance even though he drives my car all of the time, and I pay my own fiancé which is not even half of what his is! He knows we need this baby things and hasn’t even offered to buy anything and he knows our child still needs uniform and hasn’t offered to buy these either, even when I said oh I don’t get paid again until a week before he goes to school and that’s leaving it a little late to get the rest of the uniform as it may be sold out then.
i don’t know if I’m just super hormonal or if he’s just being very greedy with his money!

So he doesn't pay anything and you pay everything? Why don't you just have joint finances and share it anyway? If he says no to this you have a cocklodger.

1FootInTheRave · 14/08/2022 14:20

How are you getting uc when he's earning 850 quid a week?

ShandaLear · 14/08/2022 14:21

Why on earth would you pay for his car? There is no rational reason for you to do so.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 14/08/2022 14:21

He earns £850 a week and you still get universal credit? Is that a typo? Either way he can pay for his own car if you pay for yours

girlmom21 · 14/08/2022 14:22

If he'd earning £850 a week you shouldn't be entitled to universal credit.

If you're claiming benefits and spending £420 a month on car finance you're taking the absolute piss.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/08/2022 14:23

He's a cocklodger, op. Take off the blinders. Stop paying for anything for him and get rid. This situation will not improve.

PinkBump2022 · 14/08/2022 14:23

@1FootInTheRave I have no idea our rent is high because we have an adapted home because I have a disabled child….. my partner has a disability which effects him working. So we don’t get much. But that wasn’t my question at all

Decompressingmama3 · 14/08/2022 14:23

Yeah I'm confused. You wouldn't be getting a penny as a joint claim if he's earning 850 a week.. I'm going to ask what others are thinking but are you fraudulently claiming as a single person?

Sciurus83 · 14/08/2022 14:23

850 a week and you get universal credit?

luxxlisbon · 14/08/2022 14:23

Why on earth are you still getting UC when he earns almost 45k and you are working on top?
Are you claiming as as single parent but actually living with a working partner who is the father to 2 of your children?

GoldenSpiral · 14/08/2022 14:24

How is this even a question. What are you doing OP? Stop paying for his car immediately and start asking for some money towards his children. He's a CF.

Shinyandnew1 · 14/08/2022 14:24

We have never had a car on finance as we tend to buy older cheaper cars outright but to me it sounds crazy to spend £400+ a month on a finance when you are claiming benefits?!

This. You shouldn't be getting it on that wage

toomuchlaundry · 14/08/2022 14:26

Have you declared his earnings?

Quitelikeit · 14/08/2022 14:26

What bills does he pay out of his £850 a week?

this is crucial info before people can answer

girlmom21 · 14/08/2022 14:26

OP are you talking about disability benefit as opposed to universal credit?

Greybutterfly · 14/08/2022 14:27

So he earns £3000 a month ? What is he spending his money on if he can’t afford to buy a crib or pay his car insurance. You need a serious talk !!!

I would also double check your benefit eligibility urgently this does not sound right

wapdl · 14/08/2022 14:28

Really 🤨

RainyDays22 · 14/08/2022 14:29

If he's earning £850 a week you wouldn't get UC. I call bullshit.

djdkdkddkek · 14/08/2022 14:32

is this even real?
like what kind of arrangement is this? Like, what? How did you type that out and think “this is a confusing scenario”

Aprilx · 14/08/2022 14:33

I can’t even answer your question, I am so shocked that two working people, at least one on £850 a week, running two cars one of which is on £420 a month finance are entitled to Universal Credit! It is an absolute disgrace. No you should not be paying for his car, but I don’t feel anybody else should be either.

Anniefrenchfry · 14/08/2022 14:34

Are you false claiming? Saying he does not live with you?

ladygindiva · 14/08/2022 14:35

Agree with earlier posters but also... What car do you have ?? We upgraded to a fairly flashy golf on finance but it's nowhere near £400 a month!!!

PinkButtercups · 14/08/2022 14:35

No way would someone be earning £850 a week and be able to get UC. Unless you're fiddling the system and saying he doesn't live there!
