Waitrose refused to leave grocery delivery with 22 year old daughter!

No alcohol
no toiletries ie razor blades

just food.

My DD was working from home. She showed ID and he said that couldn’t leave with anyone under 25.

Seems bloody daft to me.

Now got to arrange a re delivery but was for friends over… tonight!!

My daughter aged 18 used to carry out audits for supermarket home deliveries. She would have failed them for confusing Think 25 with actually being underage.

There’s been a real increase in 24 year olds causing absolute anarchy with bags of carrots. Ultimately I think it’s the single biggest problem in society today and Waitrose are only being responsible.

Agreed!

Not read all the posts but phone Customer Services and the store where the order was picked and delivered.

Do you really think your advice is uniquely special that you must instantly post after reading only the OP’s opening post?

You don’t need to read ALL the posts, but maybe make a bit of effort to filter and read all the OP’s posts, then you wouldn’t look like a ‘you know what’. 😂

10HailMarys · 12/08/2022 12:05

Why would you arrange delivery and then go out???

Because there was another adult in the house to take in the delivery. That's the whole point.

halohell · 12/08/2022 12:06

I'm glad you sorted it out with the store OP, but how ridiculous for this to have happened. I forgot I had an Ocado delivery last week and they left the shopping with 17 yr old ds with no ID, just removed one thing that had alcohol in. I'd have been livid if they'd refused to leave it with an over 18 with ID.

25 is quite a random age, no legal significance AFAIK. If it's a specific thing for knives or alcohol, then why not just remove and refund those items? I can't see why it matters if it's the account holder or not. A lot of over 18s will be householders themselves, or will be contributing towards parents' grocery bills. A lot of people also place orders on behalf of other people who are not the account holder, like sending a delivery to student dcs. Does Waitrose not allow that?

Yeah, I had my own home when I was 21yo. She could easily have been the home owner."

Yes, in 2022 you are allowed to own your own home at 21 (an almost impossible occurrence I'm sure bearing in mind home ownership in the UK but technically, yes you can own your own home at 21) but you may not shave your legs or pour yourself a babysham!

darisdet · 12/08/2022 12:08

How stupid! Glad you got it sorted out, OP.

TenoringBehind · 12/08/2022 12:09

How bizarrre. I’ve often had my 16 and even 14 yo accept Ocado deliveries. I just had to conform by phone that I was happy with it.

Discovereads · 12/08/2022 12:10

They did this to my DD (18) as well. Unfortunately her passport was in renewal purgatory and so she had no ID and the driver and customer service insisted she looked “too young”. So poor DD had to walk to the Co op and get the bare essentials. This was when DH and I were out of the country for a few days to handle affairs when my DF passed away.

JustDanceAddict · 12/08/2022 12:12

That’s madness.
I once put the wrong time in for an ocado delivery - and I wasn’t in - my kids weren’t even 18 yet and they left it with them!
They say you need to be 18 to receive, not 25 ffs!

JustDanceAddict · 12/08/2022 12:15

joan12 · 12/08/2022 11:26

Ocado are much better for this, would even leave the shopping by the door if I was stuck in traffic. Wish they still delivered Waitrose though - have had to switch to Waitrose own delivery and they are really ott and pedantic.

Ocado have not been the same since they dropped Waitrose.

PeppaPigIsAnnoying · 12/08/2022 12:17

Endlesslypatient82 · 12/08/2022 11:00

Ocado are brilliant

they will even leave outside my private front door if I leave a note

I used to deliver for Ocado. For shopping to be left when the customer isn't in you should contact customer services in advance

Doing it your way is great but if the shopping got stolen that's when you'd have an issue. The driver also shouldn't be leaving the shopping without it being confirmed by the office

PrinceYakimov · 12/08/2022 12:19

Wow, a 22 year old in charge of some food, what a truly terrifying thought! Thanks Waitrose for keeping us all safe!

justasking111 · 12/08/2022 12:19

I was baby sitting when Asda arrived for DIL no ID on me huge baskets I couldn't have carried the lovely driver carried in the chilled and frozen food stuff for me so I could put it away. The rest he left in the porch. Common sense was missing here Waitrose

prh47bridge · 12/08/2022 12:21

Customer Services were wrong, as was the delivery driver. Waitrose's terms and conditions are clear that they will deliver to a nominated representative of the account holder provided they are at least 18. Proof of age is required if the person looks under 25.

Additional to their terms, their page on booking a slot and placing an order says, "We deliver to anyone who is 18 and over. Where our drivers believe someone is underage, and in accordance with Challenge 25, they will request to see a form of photo ID before continuing with the delivery. This is our policy regardless of whether there are age restricted items or not."

In your position, I would go back to Customer Services again and complain. If they push the line that the driver was right, point out to them that their published terms say otherwise.

ultraviolet4753 · 12/08/2022 12:25

That's nuts, I was married and in our own house by 17. Everyone who came to the door kept asking if my mum or dad was in for years. Easy way to get rid of cold callers though!

Jaxhog · 12/08/2022 12:25

Endlesslypatient82 · 12/08/2022 11:00

No, they aren't! Ocado are so lax that they left my neighbours shopping on OUR doorstep. They didn't knock or ring, so we only discovered it after they drove off.

Bunnycat101 · 12/08/2022 12:29

I get so annoyed with overzealous and stupid rules like this. I once spent 3 hours on the phone to bensons for bed to complain about a faulty sofa bed (that was in the room I was in and paid for by my joint credit card) and they refused to speak to me for gdpr reasons as the order was in my husband’s name. I was so bloody annoyed. All I wanted them to do was exchange the faulty object sat 1m away from me. There is no reason why shopping can’t be left with a 22 year old. I’d be so annoyed if I needed the delivery and had to rearrange.

So if I was under 25, but married to someone over 25 who was the account holder, they wouldn't leave the delivery with me? Because I wasn't 25??? How ridiculous!!!

LovinglifeAF · 12/08/2022 12:31

That seems crazy

Morrisons left mine with my 15 and 13 year old! They delivered early and I wasn’t in, they phoned to tell me they’d left it with them though. No alcohol/age restricted items.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 12/08/2022 12:32

What @prh47bridge said.

Alternatively in future, you could order Morrison's via Amazon where they seem to be happy to leave bottles of whiskey with an 11 year old Shock

southlondonerhere · 12/08/2022 12:33

Endlesslypatient82 · 12/08/2022 10:45

The order was £43
the only thing that could be dangerous I suppose was the cabbage (lob someone over the head with it?!)

pain in the arse to reschedule and now have to grocery shop for tonight

waitrose - you are bloody annoying

I'd also mention to Waitrose the impact on the environment? They're now going to have to make 2 trips unnecessarily

MrsRinaDecker · 12/08/2022 12:38

That’s annoying! Tesco have a clear policy that there must be an over 18 in the house which they do enforce (eg if ds15 answers the door they might ask if an adult is home) but 25 is ridiculous, especially if it’s not made obvious at the point you order.
