Waitrose refused to leave grocery delivery with 22 year old daughter!

No alcohol
no toiletries ie razor blades

just food.

My DD was working from home. She showed ID and he said that couldn’t leave with anyone under 25.

Seems bloody daft to me.

Now got to arrange a re delivery but was for friends over… tonight!!

Hope you get it sorted, you might get a voucher or bunch of flowers as well as an apology

SierraSapphire · 12/08/2022 10:53

They were going to leave it with DD, who's 19 when I'd just had a hysterectomy though they wanted to see her ID, though at that stage I just got up and went to the door anyway so they could see I was here.

As a delivery driver, your Waitrose drivers was being OTT as your daughter proved she was over 18.

The policy is the same as mine - Think 25 if they appear under 25 and ask for ID. Upon proving they're 18+, leave shopping with customer.

It's that simple.

Bubbafly · 12/08/2022 10:55

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!

DownNative · 12/08/2022 10:56

To add, it doesn't matter if there's no age restricted items in shopping as the entire shopping cannot legally be left with under 18s anyway.

Even if its just food.

That'll be in your terms and conditions.

How did the delivery driver know that your DD was not you if he just had a name?

Because I had stupidly left a note to say knock hard as DAughter in home office and doorbell not working

just spoke to store. They’ve apologised and going to get redelivered. I have to juggle an appointment to be here but will be worth it!

thank you to advice to call store

Loads of people surely delegate waiting in for the shopping delivery to adult children (particularly in the summer when the students are back home). That’s an obvious thing people are going to do. It’s being delivered to the specified address (not even a new address, but the one you always use) and someone in the house is taking the delivery. That should be enough.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/08/2022 10:59

Mad! What about people under 25 living alone, can’t they have shopping delivered?

DownNative · 12/08/2022 10:59

PugInTheHouse · 12/08/2022 10:39

Ah, x posts. I wouldn't think anything of leaving 16 or 14 yo DSs at home to take tesco delivery in, it wouldn't cross my mind they wouldn't be allowed if there was no alcohol in the order.

A Tesco driver who leaves shopping with under 18s will get in trouble. Even if its food shopping.

It's in your terms and conditions. Check them.

Endlesslypatient82 · 12/08/2022 11:00

Ocado are brilliant

they will even leave outside my private front door if I leave a note

OP posts:
elliejjtiny · 12/08/2022 11:00

That's ridiculous. I was married and had 2 dc before I was 25.

Motnight · 12/08/2022 11:01

I used to send Ocado deliveries to my 20 year old dd when she was at Uni. That's ridiculous Op!

CredibilityProblem · 12/08/2022 11:03

Oh I see, you've just got a driver who's failed to understand how "challenge 25" work. That's really annoying and they need to improve their training and/or not hire complete numpties.

orbitalcrisis · 12/08/2022 11:13

I had two children, a mortgage and a licence to sell alcohol at your daughter's age, I can see why Waitrose would not trust me with a cabbage.

sweeetpotato · 12/08/2022 11:18

Pathetic system.

18+ I can understand because of the potential for age restricted items, but that is overkill. Absolutely unnecessary and stupid.

sweeetpotato · 12/08/2022 11:19

What's the difference between a 25 and a 26 year old for taking in a grocery shop for another person living in the house?

We use Asda and they literally just bung the crates into the porch as long as it's clearly an adult.

Hillary17 · 12/08/2022 11:21

I was asked for ID from Tesco recently - apparently anyone under 18 can’t legally accept a home delivery!

Hoppinggreen · 12/08/2022 11:22

Ocado have delivered to my 17 year old and her 13 year old brother before if I have been out and DH is on a call

MrsAvocet · 12/08/2022 11:25

I had exactly the same thing happen with my DD and Tesco a few years ago. I complained because not only was I left with no food but my DD was pretty annoyed about the rude way the driver spoke to her. He was confused with the Think 25 policy. I got my money refunded and a fairly generous amount of vouchers.

joan12 · 12/08/2022 11:26

Ocado are much better for this, would even leave the shopping by the door if I was stuck in traffic. Wish they still delivered Waitrose though - have had to switch to Waitrose own delivery and they are really ott and pedantic.

lastminutedotcom22 · 12/08/2022 11:29

Endlesslypatient82 · 12/08/2022 10:45

The order was £43
the only thing that could be dangerous I suppose was the cabbage (lob someone over the head with it?!)

pain in the arse to reschedule and now have to grocery shop for tonight

waitrose - you are bloody annoying

I would go to your local Waitrose and complain to the manager you've had to come in it's a massive inconvenience etc and they might give you a voucher to say sorry

VerbenaGirl · 12/08/2022 11:30

That is bonkers! My 18 year old has been allowed to accept grocery deliveries.

wheresthetimegone4 · 12/08/2022 11:30

Thats madness!! They don't check your age when you order and they take your money do they?!
What if she was the home owner?! That's just crazy and I really don't understand it.

bristolpities · 12/08/2022 11:33

Hope it goes ok - my reading of their T&C is that although they will ask for ID under 25 their T&C do say that it's ok to leave with someone who is the nominated person as long as over 18.

People bang on about this " training" ( I have to periodically do for similar at work too)

I swear its just a way for someone in an office somewhere to feel important because there is nothing complicated about " if anyone looks under 21/25 ask for proof of age. We accept XYZ as valid"

No wonder people get confused when there's an entire training session dedicated to whats one bloody sentence
