Are you actually going out in this heat?

I feel so bad for keeping my kids in (we have air con) but I just can not bare this heat and my kids are so fair I don’t like them being out in the sun for too long. Aibu for staying in this week? It’s supposed to be back to a normal temp next week and we are going away so they will have plenty to do.

We've been going out. Nothing nicer than swimming in the sea. My DC have been having a lovely time. But they take after me in that they aren't sensitive to the sun. I let them have some time in the sun (for Vit D) before putting sun cream on and the youngest has a rash vest.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 12/08/2022 05:06

Absolutely but then I've got the week off and we used to live in Spain so we're a bit more used to how to manage it.

Siameasy · 12/08/2022 05:59

Not just going out but sunbathing ☀️

PatientlyWaiting21 · 12/08/2022 06:15

Seeing so many saying the Stay indoors to avoid heatstroke…lack of fluids in hot weather causes heatstroke.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/08/2022 06:42

We've got no indoor options!

Currently camping and DS's asthma flared up in that hideous solid block of humidity we had at the end of July and we're still trying to get it under control so every time we have an abrupt change of air quality, the ventolin comes out. This includes things like going into a supermarket, and we're having to keep the air temperature in the car managed very delicately.

We're spending the time in shady gardens or keeping him cool in the sea/ swimming pool. The dry outdoor air he is coping with thank goodness.

A lot of people happily chug away at water but don't replace their electrolytes that they sweat out and wonder why they feel lousy.

Increasing salt or drinking sports/ electrolyte products makes a big difference.

TabithaTittlemouse · 12/08/2022 06:48

I’ve been working. Dc have been camping and swimming locally.
looking forward to my day off to lounge outside.

tiggergoesbounce · 12/08/2022 07:08

The forecast are saying the hottest/highest UV rays times here are 4pm to 7pm, we go out in the morning, maybe nip in for lunch and ice creams at lunch then back home for about 14.00.
But its only about 32 here so not too hot as other places are having.

maddy68 · 12/08/2022 07:29

These posts make me smile.
I live in a hot country. Why wouldn't you go out and enjoy it? It's such a rare event having a hot British summer

Go to the beach , sit in a shady beer garden , put the paddling pool out.

Louise0701 · 11/08/2022 23:34

@OnTheRunWithMannyMontana I hope nobody can see you shave on the patio!

Oops 😂 also we sit in front of a fan not a can.

Must have had tired fingers last night!

“Only 28” 🥲

anything over 17 degrees is too hot for me.

Same. Can't cope very well at all over this temperature.

Summersdreaming · 12/08/2022 07:45

Yes I'm in my element! Finished work on time every day this week so I could go for a stroll in the sun each evening, I finish early today then I'll be in the garden until the sun goes off. Giddy at the thought of a full weekend of 30° sun, it never happens where I live! I'll be doing an impression of a lizard all weekend.

Baycitystroller · 12/08/2022 07:48

Well glad people are enjoying the heat. It’s not normal though. Yes we’ve had hot summers before but the planet is hotter than ever and is warming up. This has serious consequences.

also other countries don’t always cope. For example, 2000 excess deaths in Spain and Portugal attributed to their heatwave this year. The heatwave in India and Pakistan in March to May killed off their wheat harvest. This is contributing to a shortage.

climate change is real and will only get worse. I can’t enjoy this hot weather without the thought that the planet is fucked if governments don’t start taking it seriously..

edwinbear · 12/08/2022 07:52

We’ve just returned from a couple of days in Broadstairs, it was much cooler on the beach with the breeze and the sea, than the stifling heat in London.

Saturday & Sunday 12 yr old DS has a big athletics competition, he’ll be running 100m/200m/800m plus long jump over the course of the weekend. He’ll be hot and I doubt there will be many PB’s broken by anyone, but they are all fit so sure they will cope.

NameChangeLifeChange · 12/08/2022 07:58

We are going out and about plenty! Eldest DC has been in forever school all week so outside all day (lots of shade, sun cream and water!) and we’ve been in work. We have a north facing garden so we get sunny mornings then the sun goes in around 3pm which means DC can play in the paddling pool and garden all afternoon and avoid direct sun which is a godsend! Our kids love the heat though and none of us burn easily/have so much factor 50 on it would be impossible! We are going to Spain next week when the weather drops here so can’t wait for more sun!

NameChangeLifeChange · 12/08/2022 07:59

Forest not forever!

felulageller · 12/08/2022 08:05

Just get them up and out and back in before 11am. We have to take a Spanish approach to this and have siestas. Early mornings, sleeping in the afternoon and back out at night. Take the DCs out at 7/8 pm until it gets dark. They shouldn't be indoors 24/7 for days at a time.

Ladyof2022 · 12/08/2022 08:23

I find this heat utterly unbearable.

I'm staying home during the day, under a fan (one in bedroom, one in kitchen one in lounge and one in my office) but I periodically turn it off as I am also worried about what the electricity bill will be like if I have one running 24 hours a day.

SheeplessAndCounting · 12/08/2022 08:43

But then, who would look after me? I need someone young, say mid-to-late 70's. Maybe a retired nurse who likes cooking and cleaning.

I don't think I'd find many candidates on OLD, so I'd better stick with the current model. And buy a new blanket.

🤣🤣🤣

Benjispruce4 · 12/08/2022 09:00

I don’t really like over 28c . I find it difficult clothing wise as even T shirts are too warm. Finding long thin dresses best to waft about in. Feel for those in hot jobs like hospital staff in masks etc and those in physical jobs.

RayneDance · 12/08/2022 09:04

No, we've been mostly keeping in because we've been away and DC want to relax anyway.
We had a day out this week and came home before 2pm .
House is cool ish

GirlInACountrySong · 12/08/2022 09:06

Don't really have a choice

Off to work I go ..

Favouritefruits · 12/08/2022 09:27

I live in the north so it’s not exactly tropical, I’m enjoying the nice weather whilst I can, padding pool set up, trips to the beach and I’m fine with hot weather and my kids seem to be too so I’m not staying in but each to their own. If you feels it’s too hot then stay inside nobody is judging you…my kids would drive me crazy after a week indoors!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 12/08/2022 09:46

Yeeeees!!!

so there you have it folks, being outside won’t cause you heat stroke, being outside and not looking after yourself will!

get Outside and soak up that vitamin d

Honestly, this country is full of drama-lamas. It's not that hot! Certainly not hot enough to refuse to leave the house!

Exactly
