Are you actually going out in this heat?

I feel so bad for keeping my kids in (we have air con) but I just can not bare this heat and my kids are so fair I don’t like them being out in the sun for too long. Aibu for staying in this week? It’s supposed to be back to a normal temp next week and we are going away so they will have plenty to do.

Yes! Small children here. We are going to the beach a lot. Yesterday they collected and decorated rocks, found some crabs in the rock pools, loved swimming in the sea. Usually much too cold for them in the UK to do that even in summer hols, to be in the water for very long and really enjoy it. I had a proper sea swim going far out from shore which is never usually a prospect I'd consider when the sea is cold. Then ice creams. A perfect summer holiday day.

It's beautiful summer weather, that usually you have to board a plane to experience. Let's stop moaning about it!! When at home they do waterslides/ paddling pool. It's fantastic.

We moan so much (rightly) about the awful weather in the UK so can't we just be a little happy that for once we have a nice summer with proper summer weather?

In theory, I suppose the family can all get on the treadmills or whatever. In practice, I think people mostly just wind up looking at screens and boredom-eating when they spend days indoors. I mean, the lockdown pounds came from somewhere.

Oh, I follow you. I think there is a problem that, in the UK, we're not really used to adapting routines to exercising late/early, and we tend to associate being at home with doing very little that's physical. But I think that will start to change if temperatures stay like this.

It's really bothering me how many people will justify taking their dogs for a walk in the middle of the day, or shoving their children into the garden, by saying 'oh but people in hot countries are fine!' And my sense is that yes, people in hotter countries are fine, but they're generally much more sensible about when, how, and for how long they stay outdoors.

Fink · 11/08/2022 23:05

Yes, I just walk more slowly than usual. Apart from that, I've been going out. Making sure I keep the babies shaded (am minding extended family members' children so babies plural, not all mine) and the children creamed, hatted, and as shaded as possible. It's better than the alternative of staying cooped up in the house. I love the warm weather (even in a city and with a car and house with no aircon), but I'm careful with the children.

Louise0701 · 11/08/2022 23:05

Yes we’ve out been everyday, as usual. Do you people complaining not go on holiday?

Today we’ve been to a large playground not far from us, lunch there in the cafe then home and spent the afternoon in the pool. BBQ for dinner.

Tomorrow we are having friends round and DH has already set the bebop up ready for the day. We have lots of food, cold drinks & ice lollies and I’m looking forward to another gorgeous day.

SheeplessAndCounting · 11/08/2022 23:07

It's like many people have never heard of UV umbrellas or sun cream. So odd.

Yes it's warm. It's summer. This is the normal summer temp in much of Europe for 2-3 months every year and usually British people pay huge amounts to go to experience a week or two of it. Just be happy!

I appreciate if you have a physical outdoor job it must be hard. Sensible employers would be adjusting hours as they do in warmer countries so people start very early in the morning and finish early afternoon. Then they have the rest of the day free too to enjoy the summer 😊☀️

But moaning about it I find very strange. In a couple of months people will be moaning about floods/ cold etc.

Tilda77 · 11/08/2022 23:14

We go out if we have to for work, shopping or appointments in this heat. I don't do well in this weather😅
We were in North Wales last week and saw rain for the first time in a long time. We had a fantastic week it was about 17 degrees. I felt like a human again instead of a melting mess😂

You do realise that, in those same countries where Brits go on holiday, 1) a lot of people who live there don't go out in the middle of the day and 2) people mock Brits for doing so. 'Mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun'.

My employer was stunned my daughter's school was closing early to let children go home when it was up at 40 degrees. He made your argument - what about places where it's warmer?! How silly, they cope fine there. I asked friends living in France and Spain (so, not exactly the hottest places in the world ever, just a bit hotter than the UK), and they said, duh, we cope by not having children in schools when it's 40 degrees, we're not idiots.

It would be incredibly stupid to finish a physical job in the early afternoon, if the temperature were high. Temperatures peak then. You need to work early mornings and then an evening shift. You know, like ... having a break in the middle of the day, like ... ooh, like what a lot of people in hotter countries do.

SilentBob · 11/08/2022 23:18

Yup, to work as a chef in a doorless and windowless kitchen which is quite probably smaller than most people on Mumsnet's home kitchen. I have bills to pay.

My dog, however, gets taken to the in-laws early doors and stays there for the duration of my shift, with her cool mat and water bowls and treats and balls.

One of us is a sucker. Spoiler alert- it's not the damn dog.

RagzRebooted · 11/08/2022 23:18

No, I'm staying inside! I have the week off work (work was hell last time it was hot) and I've been inside with curtains drawn most of the week. DCs are older, I wouldn't be taking little ones out. I had heatstroke several times as a child in temperatures lower than this and it was awful (night in hospital on a drip), so I'm sensitive to the heat. Seriously considering moving north if this is becoming normal for summers (South East currently).

DS1 doesn't go outside anyway really so no change for him, but he is very fair so shouldn't anyway. DS2 is currently grounded, otherwise he'd be out every day but would have been after 7pm when it's cooler (him and his mates had been out 7-10pm every night until they did something stupid and got grounded). DD has been at forest school the last 3 days, 11-4 but it is under shade, she's not one for going out otherwise, she will be hiding at home the rest of the time!

FunsizedandFabulous · 11/08/2022 23:27

I'm on nights. DH & DD went to the Wetlands Centre today. Tickets were booked and non-refundable. They hugged what shade there was. Our flat is very stuffy right now. The fan we have is utterly crap but I can't afford a new one until I get paid. We open the windows but it has no effect. I'm at work now and the AC is on. I don't want to go outside and help customers!

We were in Portsmouth over the weekend and it was hot but there was still a breeze coming off the Solent. In London it's utterly dry and totally oppressive. As soon as we came back we noticed a difference.

Yeezytiger · 11/08/2022 23:31

Do you have any sea near?

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 11/08/2022 23:32

We shave been having coffee and breakfast on the patio before it gets too hot. Then back in and in front of the can while I work and DD (13) watches Disney plus then back out in the evening once it has cooled a little.

Both me and DD are very fair and burn quickly. No way could we be out in it all day and not be poorly.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 11/08/2022 23:32

I'm going out only when I have to this week, which is work.
I've been getting to work half an hour early every day as they've got air con, they must think I'm well keen but in reality I just can't stick the heat anywhere else 😂

Louise0701 · 11/08/2022 23:34

@OnTheRunWithMannyMontana I hope nobody can see you shave on the patio!

Baycitystroller · 11/08/2022 23:34

Stunned by all those ‘loving the heat’ on here. We’re on the verge of a drought with all the fall out on food supply. The heatwave is a symptom of global warming. None of this is something to be pleased about.

SheeplessAndCounting · 11/08/2022 23:39

So you didn'r read my post then about people starting work early in the morning and finishing at lunchtime before the hottest part of the day? Like they do with schools and outdoor jobs in most of Europe in summer? Why are you trying to argue with me when your point appears to be the point I just made myself?

My employer was stunned my daughter's school was closing early to let children go home when it was up at 40 degrees. He made your argument - what about places where it's warmer?! Yes. Because they start at 7am and finish at 1-2pm. Per my previous comment.

As I said, you adjust working hours to start early and finish early before the hottest part of the day. To AVOID working in the hottest temperatures.

I think you must have either misunderstood my posts of responded to the wrong person.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 11/08/2022 23:39

I loved the heat when I was younger in my 20's and even worked abroad for a long time in a lot higher temperatures but now cannot stand the heat unless is a strong breeze so was in most of today with the fan on. Was out with dog later but it was so much cooler and a nice breeze. A few more days of it over here and it will be down to normal temperatures but it must be baking in parts of UK as remember when I lived there it was the humidity that was horrible.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 11/08/2022 23:41

My son brought me back a lovely iced coffee today it was delicious and really cooled me down.

This is one of the rainiest countries in the world, and is surrounded by sea. Even if dry summers became a very regular thing, proper infrastructure could easily make it manageable with water to spare. No new reservoirs have been built in the UK for 30 years. Water needs to be stored properly, when it does fall, like most other (much drier on average) countries do. We also have only one de-salination plant which currently isn't even functioning. 🤦🏻‍♀️ As with energy, the issue is entirely down to no strategic planning and investment or national strategy.

We're on the verge of a drought because water strategy in this country needs a massive rethink. Every year, gallons of water is pumped into the North Sea during October-April. A lot of environmental strategists are saying that the answer is not to look at relatively short-term fix, in other words, means of better conserving excess water during months of heavy rainfall for use during dry months such as these.

CheapFoodShits · 11/08/2022 23:43

Yes, because I'm a moron who didn't check the weather for tomorrow before booking a trip for DS and I to a theme park. I've got hats, suntan lotion, light material clothing, drinks and plenty of ice lolly money at the ready. There's a lot of shaded places there so we'll just take it easy in-between rides.

Cross Post!!

SheeplessAndCounting · 11/08/2022 23:46

@Jourdain11 absolutely!! If Cyprus and Greece can manage their water and store enough, why can't the UK? Blaming people filling paddling pools or whatever is pathetic.

Won't be long before everywhere is flooded because guess what? The ground is dry and there are no reservoirs to channel the water into. 🙄

Fordian · 11/08/2022 23:50

I open my curtains, and the sky is blue. The sun is shining.

Yes, I go. Yes. Reminds me of Queensland.

Sure, I have to adapt to such heat; shut the house down, blinds and curtains as the sun moves around, stay out of it from 10-4.

I love it (while recognising my 3 day week is worked in sometimes ferocious air con...), but the joy of clear, blue sky, and warmth on my skin. Joy.

However, I also 'get' that this weather is due to terrifying change.

We are in so much trouble.
