To think it’s actually okay to stay in during this heatwave?!

…Obviously not the entire summer but just for the few days where it’s meant to be low 30’s and there is heat warnings?!

I don’t cope well with the heat at all - feel sick, feel faint etc, our dog doesn’t cope well with being left shut in at home with the heat and wouldn’t cope walking on the pavements all day etc if we took him, so for a few days we are planning to just stay home.

Child has access to the garden all day long with a small swimming pool etc, but I’ve had a couple of comments that it’s unfair keeping her at home all day and we should be out enjoying the weather…

Am I being too precious staying in for a few days until the weather cools back down a bit?!

i think you are doing the right thing. I can't go out either, I'm on 2 weeks annual leave its just too hot.

WhatNoRaisins · 10/08/2022 12:40

We went somewhere shady first thing but it just got unpleasant so we returned home. You can't force yourself to enjoy being out in the heat if you don't enjoy it

Shoxfordian · 10/08/2022 12:40

Yanbu at all, we’re staying home all weekend - too hot

SleeplessInEngland · 10/08/2022 12:40

Of course it's fine. I guess before 11am you could take a kid to a park but after that? Much better to be in shade/indoors.

Chouetted · 10/08/2022 12:41

If being out in hot weather makes you feel ill, how exactly is your child supposed to enjoy that?

Stay at home and keep cool.

Amipreg1 · 10/08/2022 12:42

If that's what you want to do then of course it's fine.
I don't cope with the heat either and currently pregnant so I'm struggling more than usual.
Your little one won't miss out by being at home for a few days!

Thedogscollar · 10/08/2022 12:43

You are definitely not being unfair as your child has access to garden and paddling pool and presumably all other toys they have in the home.
I'd say you are being very, very sensible. The heat is going to unpleasant and potentially dangerous. You are imo doing the right thing. Have fun.

Nannydoodles · 10/08/2022 12:44

Of course you are not being unreasonable! I dislike the heat too and am praying for rain!
You definitely should not be taking a dog out anyway when it’s hot, go early morning or late evening.
Staying at home in the garden where you have access to cold drinks, shade etc sounds much, much nicer. Why do people think children need to go out to be entertained all the time? A few days at home will do no harm at all.

iloveyankeecandle · 10/08/2022 12:45

I hate it. We've been out before 11 and then back home and am inside watching films.

Dougieowner · 10/08/2022 12:47

I'm off this week and am staying indoors.
There are a few outside jobs I can do earlier or later in the day and I leave walking the dog until late evening (when the sun has gone down) but that is it, otherwise I am staying indoors.
There is no reason whatsoever to make the most of it and it is certainly not "unfair".

Hate the heat and am much happier in temps no higher than 22-23degrees.

Mindymomo · 10/08/2022 12:47

We also have a dog, DH takes him out at 5.45 am. If we need any shopping we do it early, yesterday we did a bit of gardening at 8 am. If I had small children I would put up a gazebo for some shade in garden. The rest of the day we stay indoors, then another dog walk in the evening.

RestingMurderousFace · 10/08/2022 12:48

Me and the mutts were out across the fields at 6:30am. It was absolutely perfect, about 16C and barely another soul around. They’re happy to snooze the rest of the day way while I work/potter.

YANBU. You are being entirely sensible in my book!

viques · 10/08/2022 12:48

I think we ought to adopt the Spanish tradition of paseo, the evening walk and socialisation after the heat of the day has passed.

BMW6 · 10/08/2022 12:49

I'm walking our dog between 7 - 8am, then again 7 - 8pm. Staying indoors in-between.

Back door open all day so dog can go in and out as he pleases.

I'll be doing this for the foreseeable

stayinghometoday · 10/08/2022 12:52

I take an early morning walk with dd in the forest because it's cool there and after that I stay in or in the shade of my nice cool house. We're also very fair so burn very easily. I don't want dd to get skin cancer later on.

MrsMcisaCt · 10/08/2022 12:53

You are definitely not being unreasonable. You are staying safe.

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/08/2022 12:54

I'm not planning on much at all. Paddling pool in the garden and plenty of shade and drinks.

Hoolahulahoop · 10/08/2022 12:56

Totally sensible. Also bit of advice. Don't tell people what you are doing if they criticise your choices .none of their business

Aussiedream · 10/08/2022 12:59

They only way you can be out “enjoying” a heatwave is if you live a very very short distance from a beach, pool or swim safe river, lake etc. IMO literally nothing else is “enjoyable”. I say this from a darkened air conditioned room. I am only leaving the house to swim in the local lido!

NellesVilla · 10/08/2022 13:01

YANBU!!

Why would you even think that? I literally don’t go out in this heat unless I’m going to work or for an evening/early morning dog walk!

l loathe the heat and am in between patiently waiting for it to end and pretending that it’s not happening!!

IrisVersicolor · 10/08/2022 13:02

Well only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, but other than that - it’s not that hot. If you want to stay inside though, do.

NellesVilla · 10/08/2022 13:02

Oh, and (particularly as an overweight woman) I can’t really tolerate anything above 22, so this time is horrific for me and many others.

emerald7 · 10/08/2022 13:03

Absolutely, we are doing the same. Also any place that you can go to take children to cool off is overwhelmingly busy.

OneTC · 10/08/2022 13:04

I love the hot weather but it's perfectly reasonable not to Smile

Gardenfish · 10/08/2022 13:06

We’re in the day and out early evening ie forest or beach. Any day actives are seeing friends in houses or indoor play ie trampolining.
