To think it’s actually okay to stay in during this heatwave?!

…Obviously not the entire summer but just for the few days where it’s meant to be low 30’s and there is heat warnings?!

I don’t cope well with the heat at all - feel sick, feel faint etc, our dog doesn’t cope well with being left shut in at home with the heat and wouldn’t cope walking on the pavements all day etc if we took him, so for a few days we are planning to just stay home.

Child has access to the garden all day long with a small swimming pool etc, but I’ve had a couple of comments that it’s unfair keeping her at home all day and we should be out enjoying the weather…

Am I being too precious staying in for a few days until the weather cools back down a bit?!

DH and I have just spent an hour lounging in the garden and now I feel sick 🤣

InvincibleInvisibility · 10/08/2022 14:41

We used to live in a flat in Paris with 2 boys with ADHD. We took them out twice a day (morning and afternoon) to the park/cycling/swimming/whatever in all weathers except heatwaves.

We have been alone in parks in torrential rain, windy weather, sleet, etc. But above 35 and we stayed in or only went out before 11am.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 10/08/2022 14:41

I hate hot weather; DDog and I walk well before 7am then I don’t go outside again until after 8pm. Dog can wander in and out as she pleases, at the moment she’s upstairs under the spare bed 🙄 because there’s clay pigeon shooting somewhere near.
I flop around doing little 😊

RudsyFarmer · 10/08/2022 14:42

We’re going out late afternoon on the hot days.

stillherenow · 10/08/2022 14:42

I've barely been out for weeks! Had a day out Sunday, hols next week. That's been it . Love being at home !

tiggergoesbounce · 10/08/2022 14:44

Of course YANBU, the same as those who go out with their kids aren't.

You do you, you can stay in just because you want to, its no-ones business, you dont need a reason 🤣

paulmccartneysbagel · 10/08/2022 14:48

Only mad dogs and Englishmen....!

We are also going out nice and early for the next few days and staying in lunchtime onwards. 33 degrees here until Tuesday - no thanks.

Pinkybike · 10/08/2022 14:50

I’m on holiday in Italy at the moment and it’s far too hot for me , my husband has a day trip to Rome booked for us tomorrow and I really don’t want to go but he’ll be furious when I tell him as he says I just need to acclimatise 😡

thefizz · 10/08/2022 14:50

I often wonder how people can fry themselves on the Continental beaches, and can do it every year in Summer and love it. They must be people who can tolerate high temps very well. Good luck to them, and the same to those who enjoy intense heat here too.

I can't bear it above 25d and even that's a struggle! We are just not acclimatised to it I suppose, nor do most of us have Air Con either.

I've no kids now, so have coffee in the garden at 8am or so, then indoors with the blackout blinds firmly shut and windows closed (like they do abroad), until the sun goes off the windows. Then it's back out there in the balmy evenings until bed time. I love watching the birds and bees going home to bed at that time.

Staying indoors in high temps is the right thing to do, follow our Mediterranean cousins! Early morning and evening is bearable and lovely.

Up early OH went fishing at 7am so stripped bed three loads of washing done dog had a swim in the river. Did shopping back for noon. I'm now staying in reading till later. OH back already bored so has gone out on his bike. He thinks I'm lazy the fact that house clean, washing and shopping done has passed him by.🙄

LemonPledge555 · 10/08/2022 14:52

We were thinking about going to Edinburgh zoo tomorrow, but it’s up a steep hill (in the actual zoo) and very little shade. Have explained to DC that animals will find it too hot and that we will head out to the beach early on or maybe even head to the swimming pool as hopefully will be quiet. Changing plans to adjust to the weather (if needed) seems pretty sensible to me!

RainyDays22 · 10/08/2022 14:52

YANBU. My kids are in the house where it's cool, I'm sat in the garden with the doors open under a brolly. It's to hot, the sun is a deadly laser this summer.

Getmoveon14 · 10/08/2022 14:53

Perfectly reasonable and even if the weather wasn't hot I think it's fine to have a few days at home. Children learn to do different things at home e.g. cooking, craft etc.

Thesearmsofmine · 10/08/2022 14:53

It’s fine. We tend to stay in on days like this, if we venture out it’s early morning or late evening.

BigFatLiar · 10/08/2022 14:53

Stay out of the sun and heat. OH disappears down the allotment sometimes but if I go find him he's usually having a nap in the shade, yesterday he had the guy in the next allotments dog snoozing with him.

Too hot to be busy.

Imaginary · 10/08/2022 14:53

Of course it's ok to stay in! Is anyone forcing you to go outside?
I stayed in during the last heatwave because I don't tolerate heat well, and will stay in during this one.

Onandupw · 10/08/2022 14:55

I cancelled a trip and haven’t left the house 🤷‍♀️

10HailMarys · 10/08/2022 14:56

Just do what you like? It's really not an issue.

LondonJax · 10/08/2022 15:05

'Should be out enjoying the weather' is such a stupid phrase. I can enjoy a day out on rainy day or a frosty day, even on a snowy day if I'm wearing the right clothes. So I 'enjoy the weather' all year round...because it's, ummm, weather and it happens every day. But if it's a blizzard or torrential rain why would I go out if I didn't need to? People get weird in the summer.

BiscuitLover3678 · 10/08/2022 15:28

Of course! That’s what you’re supposed to do

hiredandsqueak · 10/08/2022 15:35

I walked the dog before seven but haven't left the house since. I'm sitting with the blinds closed and the fans on doing very little. I've never liked the sun and once it gets towards mid twenties I tend to stay indoors.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/08/2022 15:59

If it was bitterly cold you wouldn't think twice. This is no exception!

LadyLindaT · 10/08/2022 16:06

I can tolerate high heat, but not humidity. The weather in the UK, at least in the South East, is currently sunny, but sickly. I also just keep thinking how ageing it is.

HerRoyalNotness · 10/08/2022 16:08

We live somewhere hot and humid and by august we are sick of it and retreat indoors. It happened earlier this year as we’ve had heat records all summer. It’s unbearable and there is nothing wrong with not going out in it!

Ringmaster27 · 10/08/2022 16:10

I’m doing the same.
I have 3 young DCs, and I really despise the heat.
We’ve got a paddling pool and a mini bouncy castle in the garden. On days like this, they are usually out in the garden in the morning when it’s cooler, come in for lunch, and then we spend the hottest hours of the afternoon doing something inside, away from the blazing sun!
