To think it’s actually okay to stay in during this heatwave?!

…Obviously not the entire summer but just for the few days where it’s meant to be low 30’s and there is heat warnings?!

I don’t cope well with the heat at all - feel sick, feel faint etc, our dog doesn’t cope well with being left shut in at home with the heat and wouldn’t cope walking on the pavements all day etc if we took him, so for a few days we are planning to just stay home.

Child has access to the garden all day long with a small swimming pool etc, but I’ve had a couple of comments that it’s unfair keeping her at home all day and we should be out enjoying the weather…

Am I being too precious staying in for a few days until the weather cools back down a bit?!

We’re having an at home day too. Will go for a walk in the woods later so the dogs gets enough exercise. We are going to the loch tomorrow nice and early to bag a shady spot for resting.

I really appreciate my 3ft thick stone walls when it’s so hot out as it’s lovely and cool indoors.

stuntbubbles · 10/08/2022 16:12

I hate the heat. Thankfully so does DD, she doesn’t want to go out above about 24/25 degrees. Says, “I’m a shady girl.” So we’ll be staying in for the duration with a freezer full of ice lollies and perhaps an early morning/evening stroll before and after the heat of the day. Sadly no paddling pool because drought. Might stretch to a bowl of water and a towel on the sitting room floor.

Fundays12 · 10/08/2022 16:15

Nope not all. I stay home if it's pretty hot unless we are going to he beach. It means I can put the paddling pool out, give the kids shade plus snacks and drinks when they need

Crikeymaccrikey · 10/08/2022 16:15

Its not unfair. Nor is it disimilar to what people pay £ 10000s for on holiday! Ie go somewhere hot n lounge by pool / around

NoSquirrels · 10/08/2022 16:26

Feel free to ignore anyone who “comments” about your perfectly responsible choices in a heatwave. Blimey.

Jellywobblescobbles · 10/08/2022 16:27

Of course you are doing the right thing. You need to be comfortable in the heat to take your child out and if you aren’t, you shouldn’t go. Enjoy relaxing at home. I plan to do the same. I have cancelled plans for this Sunday with my friend as both of don’t like intense hot weather. Plenty of time to get out and about when it’s cooler.

ladygindiva · 10/08/2022 16:30

We went out this morning early ( 5 yo twins and me) for a walk and park trip and have stayed in in the shadiest room all afternoon and will do the same tomorrow.

fishingpaintings · 10/08/2022 16:35

Gosh no, any outings only early morning or late evening. You have nothing to prove to anyone.

Rainallnight · 10/08/2022 16:36

I don’t see it as not going out to enjoy the fine weather, but rather staying indoors during an extreme weather event. YANBU

Wafflesnsniffles · 10/08/2022 16:53

"out enjoying the weather" - total oxymoron. Im not enjoying being at home indoors in this weather............ but being out in it would be far far worse! If this weather isnt your thing there is no shame in staying at home.

peaceandove · 10/08/2022 16:54

I have absolutely no attention of gadding out and about in this heat. I have turned down an invitation to meet friends in a beer garden tonight. Extreme heat, sticky tables, sweat and wasps [shudders]

I fully intend to get a tepid shower when I get home, then sit in the coolest room in the house sipping iced water and quietly reading my book.

This heat can just fuck off.

lomotree · 10/08/2022 16:57

I love this thread...there is always so much pressure to enjoy the sun....but I also don't enjoy these hot temperatures...just back from a holiday in Portugal where is was way to hot... and now here...its great not to have to feel guilty about staying inside...

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 10/08/2022 17:06

I don't understand these posts.

Of course it's ok to do whatever you want.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/08/2022 17:10

I saw a tweet before the last heatwave that said something like brits dont understand how much of our strategy for staying cool is based on doing nothing. I adopted that strategy and it worked wonders.

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2022 17:13

Well you are out enjoying it - in your garden in the pool.

What exactly is their idea of being out enjoying it?!

Ds and I and 2 of his friends have a theme park booked for Friday. It's going to be 33°.

I think I'll be be going for a cool garden and pool by about midday 🤣🤣🤣

(And I love and can handle hot weather and lived in a bigger country than this for 7 years!)

itsgettingweird · 10/08/2022 17:18

Bigger and hotter. Not sure why that autocorrected to something else!

Fwiw I have a kids paddling pool from Tesco! £4!!!!

I put an inch of water in the bottom and lay in it whilst reading my kindle inside my beach tent in the garden!!!

Or I sit in the deck chair with my feet in it.

Just wear shorts and sports bra and put a T shirt on sometimes or cover legs with a thin towel. I'm in and out of the sun as it comes round the tent and house!

prettyteapotsplease · 10/08/2022 17:23

You're not being precious at all OP as the weather is extreme. In the UK we're not acclimatised to the heat and neither were our houses built for it. I stay in with the curtains almost closed (my only reception room faces south) with plenty of lukewarm drinks. It drives me up the wall and I find it exhausting.

Lapland123 · 10/08/2022 17:25

Can’t bear it personally, also staying home mostly- looking forward to some dark evenings and rain!!

ClinkeyMonkey · 10/08/2022 17:26

I'm ok as long as I don't have to do anything strenuous - like get up off my arse. It's great if you're just sitting around eating salad and ice lollies, brought to you by your servant. Anything else is too much like hard work. I get so irritable. And I'm not great with bright light. We took our kids into the Peace Maze in Castlewellan during the last spell of hot weather and nearly came to blows! Other than that, all good🤣

Buythebag40 · 10/08/2022 17:30

That's what I'm doing too - we actually could be away at the beach at the moment but I'm choosing to stay at home in the shade with all my amenities!

This heat makes me headachey, tired and lethargic and if I were at our holiday home dh would be insisting on schlepping down to the beach every day with loads of paraphernalia and sweating under a square inch of shade whilst battling sand at every turn and queuing for an hour for an ice cream. No thanks.

AllLopsided · 10/08/2022 17:35

Very sensible! I've been hiding inside for weeks - has barely dropped below 30 here. Sat on the terrace last weekend for the first time in ages, when it was a cool 28 with a breeze Grin I am looking forward to September!

Mildmanneredmum · 10/08/2022 17:42

You have a DH problem not a heat problem

LuckySantangelo35 · 10/08/2022 17:49

stillherenow · 10/08/2022 14:42

@stillherenow

u not get bored?

I'm not the poster you were asking, but I love my home. I can't imagine getting bored at home. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy going to different places, but I would hate to think that I would get bored in my own home!
