To think it’s actually okay to stay in during this heatwave?!

…Obviously not the entire summer but just for the few days where it’s meant to be low 30’s and there is heat warnings?!

I don’t cope well with the heat at all - feel sick, feel faint etc, our dog doesn’t cope well with being left shut in at home with the heat and wouldn’t cope walking on the pavements all day etc if we took him, so for a few days we are planning to just stay home.

Child has access to the garden all day long with a small swimming pool etc, but I’ve had a couple of comments that it’s unfair keeping her at home all day and we should be out enjoying the weather…

Am I being too precious staying in for a few days until the weather cools back down a bit?!

I don't go out for leisure purposes when it's over 27

ilovesooty · 10/08/2022 13:15

It's only 26© here and I've sat outside for a bit to have my lunch on a break between work appointments. I'm enjoying the weather but what you choose to do for your own wellbeing is entirely your business.

latetothefisting · 10/08/2022 13:17

my response would be that if I was out I wouldn't be 'enjoying' the weather, I'd be hot and sticky and miserable and hating it. I haven't even gone into my garden the last few days, just stay in the house until the sun goes down.

BellaVita · 10/08/2022 13:18

I took Ddog out at 6.30am. Had my coffee out in the garden (under the umbrella) at 10.30, came back in at 11.00.

Will go out again about 3.30 but will sit under the umbrella.

PigglePuggle · 10/08/2022 13:21

Some of my best memories as a child were spent in our back garden so I don't think you're being unfair at all

tealandteal · 10/08/2022 13:22

We’re in today keeping out of the heat, I will let DS out in the garden later when it’s in shade. Tomorrow he has an activity planned at the local museum but I wouldn’t be taking him out for trips to the park/beach all day as it’s too hot.

neverbeenskiing · 10/08/2022 13:31

YANBU. Normally my school holiday survival strategy is to be out and about as much as possible letting the kids run off some energy but it's just too hot to be out in exposed areas for very long at all. We will go to the park or for a walk first thing in the mornings (DC are early risers) or early evening but the rest of the time it will be playing in the garden/paddling pool and probably too much screen time until it cools down.

Blossomandbee · 10/08/2022 13:33

YANBU at all, not many people, especially children, find scorching heat enjoyable.
If they're bored I would try and find an cool indoor activity like swimming or soft play but if they're happy at home then that's absolutely fine.

Sartre · 10/08/2022 13:34

Personally think you’re doing the right thing and I’m doing the same. My NDN has a 3 yo like I do but also a small baby and she’s constantly out with them either in the garden or taking them out even when it was 40 degrees the other week. I don’t think it’s safe personally so don’t risk it with my DC. We usually play in the garden for a bit in the morning before peak heat/UV time. It’s older DD’s birthday tomorrow so we’ll be out but not outside, we’ve booked indoor places.

Anonymous48 · 10/08/2022 13:36

Of course you're not being unreasonable!

"...should be out enjoying the weather"

Who is saying that to you, because the statement doesn't make any sense?
You said yourself the weather is awful, so how could you go out and enjoy it? Presumably you do make the most of it when the weather is nice.

QueSyrahSyrah · 10/08/2022 13:38

Each to their own OP! Do what works best for you and your family.

I've taken a half day tomorrow to go to a local outdoor event, it's forecast 31 but very breezy (coastal). I love it, but not everyone does!

User8273738273737 · 10/08/2022 13:39

@Amipreg1 also pregnant here and wow the heat makes me feel unwell! This is nothing like how heat used to feel like when not pregnant

RestingMurderousFace · 10/08/2022 12:48

Me and the mutts were out across the fields at 6:30am. It was absolutely perfect, about 16C and barely another soul around. They’re happy to snooze the rest of the day way while I work/potter.

YANBU. You are being entirely sensible in my book!

same here, out before 7 with the hounds and they've barely moved since.

Rosehugger · 10/08/2022 13:42

It's about 25C here at the moment which I don't think is massively hot, but it really is unusually dry for the time of year. Actually hoping for rain next week.

It's not the sort of heat which stops me from doing anything in particular but it is best to take it easy and stay out of the hottest temperatures in the middle of the day.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 10/08/2022 13:43

I don’t like being out in the blazing heat. For me, it’s wonderful being sat in a camping chair right outside the French doors as it feels warm but it’s still shady. That’s where we ate our dinner last night. Perfect.

Rosehugger · 10/08/2022 13:43

Yeah, I keep checking the dogs are ok as I took them out earlier and they are so sleepy! They probably have the right idea.

Footbal · 10/08/2022 13:47

You are doing the right thing. Whenever there is a heatwave I don't leave the house or garden. I'm lucky that I've a nice garden so the kids can have their pool and we have shade. Don't understand people rushing to the parks and beaches as soon as the temperature rises.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/08/2022 13:51

We are staying in from tomorrow until Monday after 11am

I have no interest in going anywhere- that's what TV is for

CryCeratops · 10/08/2022 14:09

If it’s cooler inside than outside, it sounds perfectly sensible staying in.

When we had the last heatwave I was restricting any trips out to first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening, when it’s a bit cooler.

GarlandsinGreece · 10/08/2022 14:20

We’ve just finished a lengthy stretch of high heat (thermometer temp was 94 yesterday but 100 percent humidity made it feel like 106). There were warnings issued about going out in the middle of the day. It was already low 80s when I walked my dogs at 6am. Brutal. I don’t cope well with it, either.

Wnikat · 10/08/2022 14:27

Who do people talk to about the minutiae of their life so much in order to receive these "comments"?

Mommabear20 · 10/08/2022 14:28

I went out this morning (forgetting we were due high temperatures) and returned home with only half my job list done! The kids won't nap as it's too warm, so we're just chilling with a movie and an ice pop. Don't think being inside for a few days does them any harm whatsoever!

Crunchymum · 10/08/2022 14:34

Who made these comments @GreenTeaMom ?

Not sure why it's anyone else's business.

We've been heading out for a few hours (usually until 11ish) and then again for a canal walk / local park / ice cream shop after dinner (so 5.30pm ish)

I had an appointment today and kids had to stay with grandparents. We walked home at 2pm - a 15 minute walk - it was disgustingly hot and we are now all in the living room with the shutters closed.

anon666 · 10/08/2022 14:34

I'm so relieved you said this. I'm on holiday in Europe but it's hotter than usual in this part of the world.

I'm feeling super guilty about wanting to stay in. But when I go out, I feel lightheaded and sick, plus my arms and legs are like lead weights.

It's not a holiday if all I am is ill. 😬

Sunnyqueen · 10/08/2022 14:38

As long as dd is outside playing in the garden and in the pool I dont see the problem
