Was I BU when I confronted this young man

My daughter is in year 10 and works at a chain food store. When she finishes work, she sometimes goes to the other big chain next to her workplace. This afternoon, she went there and was served by a boy from her class. When he got her drink, he took it back and shoved a wooden spoon in it and told her to go kill herself. When she told me, I went back to the store and asked to speak to the manager and the young man together. I introduced myself and recounted the events back to them both and then gave him a calm, but stern and serious talking to. I should mention that he constantly taunts and belittles the girls at school and often tells them to kill themselves. He was humble and apologetic and made no excuses. I spoke separately to the manager afterwards and apologized for insisting to speak with them both as I'm sure it was embarrassing for him. I felt it had to be done. Now that I've reflected, I realise I will feel bad if he loses his job though he will likely pay her out at school tomorrow. Did I do the wrong thing? My daughter didn't have a problem with it.

I think you were entirely reasonable OP. I’d have dragged him out from behind the counter and kicked his head in.

Agrudge · 10/08/2022 12:57

I'd be going one step further and emailing head office aswell

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/08/2022 12:57

he does sound unhinged.
does he think he is funny?
in a work place this is totally inappropriate
not that it is appropriate anywhere of course

godmum56 · 10/08/2022 13:00

I think you have done the boy a favour. He needs to learn NOW that such things are not acceptable before he is an adult and the job REALLY matters

MaChienEstUnDick · 10/08/2022 13:01

I think you were absolutely right to speak to the manager. I think it maybe wasn't on you to give a 'stern talking to' - essentially the manager should follow their workplace procedures and do that themselves, you can't have customers coming in and telling staff off!

And yes, i think your DD will need a bit of support at school.

As to whether this knobhead gets fired - I have no fucks to give about that.

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 10/08/2022 13:02

You did exactly the right thing and the little sod should be sacked.

I'd also tell the school exactly what happened and who was involved so that can keep an eye out for any follow up ructions at school.

AnneElliott · 10/08/2022 13:03

Nasty little shit should get fired. I'd have done the same. And if I was the manager I'd fire any of my team who said that to a customer!

Ohtoberoavingagain · 10/08/2022 13:03

He verbally abused a customer, your DD. Instant dismissal in my book.
What little shit.

LonelyInAutumn · 10/08/2022 13:03

You'd feel bad if he loses his job but he doesn't feel bad for telling people to kill themselves

GCMM · 10/08/2022 13:06

If your daughter didn't have a problem with what he said, that suggests she is used to it. In which case the school really needs to tackle this problem. Good for you for challenging unacceptable behaviour. He's young, but needs to learn a lesson.

TommySaid · 10/08/2022 13:06

What country are you in?

I feel like there’s a big chunk of the story missing here.

It couldn’t have just been him and your DD present at the time if it’s a big chain.
Even the smallest McDonald’s etc have at least 3 or 4 staff around at all times.

So what did they do when this happened?
Where was the manager at this time?

If he’s talking to customers like this then he should absolutely lose his job.

How are 15 year olds employed by big chain food places? Is this in the U.K.?

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 10/08/2022 13:09

You did a great service to those youngsters he was abusing well done you! Flowers

UnicornsDoExist · 10/08/2022 13:09

You did good. Hopefully that’s the end of his foolishness

Georgeskitchen · 10/08/2022 13:09

yanbu and if that was a daughter of mine he would have wooden spoon shoved somewhere the sun doesn't shine

It can’t be in the UK as they’re in school tomorrow.

OP also says it happened this afternoon and she went back and spoke to the manager etc before the afternoon started in the UK.

You can work as a server in McDonald’s at 13

Piggieinthemiddle · 10/08/2022 13:11

I'm confused by the wooden spoon thing. First I thought maybe it was Nando's and he brought the drink to her table, took the wooden spoon table number thing (assuming they still have those) and put it in her drink (I still don't understand why? to ruin her drink because it would be dirty?)... but aren't Nando's drinks self-service?

Ignoring my confusion, a member of staff has told a customer to kill themselves. They should be sacked. You should not feel bad if he is. Assuming "My daughter didn't have a problem with it." means she did not mind you confronting him, you have done nothing wrong.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/08/2022 13:12

My guess is this is Australia - winter term and 16 yo

CuriousCatfish · 10/08/2022 13:12

Are some schools back from summer holidays now?

Most kids don’t go back until September in the uk?

Fingeronthebutton · 10/08/2022 13:12

This is one of the reasons we are in the state we’re in. Scroats like him have been getting away with this shit for years.
A slap on the wrist doesn’t hit the spot. Being questioned in a police station might go a little way in frightening the evil little bastard.

TheOriginalClownfish · 10/08/2022 13:13

Good enough for him.
School insulates young people from the consequences of their behaviour a lot. He's old enough to have a job, earn a wage, so far too old to pretend that his bullying is harmless playground stuff.

With luck this will be his wake-up call that the real world won't let him away with his shitty behaviour.

billy1966 · 10/08/2022 13:13

Too bloody right you did it in front of the manager.

A staff member telling a customer to kill themselves?

Unbelievable.

You would have been reasonable to report his abusive behaviour to the police.

Don't hesitate to tell the school.

Really shocking behaviour.

Not acceptable.

One of my daughters was away for several weeks at a foreign language college and in conversation reported some unpleasant things some of the teen boys were saying to some of her friends about their appearance.
It caused great upset among her friends.
I was the parent that co-ordinated the expensive trip and kicked up a huge fuss.

I really mean huge.

They took my formal complaint very seriously and dealt with it very firmly.

They interviewed all the girls and asked for them to write the names of the boys involved down.

All the parents of the boys were contacted, given the full facts, and told that if they so much as look sideways at another girl there for the duration of the course they would be removed.

They were also prevented from attending any extracurricular activities that the girls were going on and kept away from them completely, which definitely impacted the rest of THEIR stay, but that was the condition of them remaining.

I have zero regrets about fxxking up their expensive trip.

I hope they think twice about what comes out of their mouths, belittling the appearance of girls they do not know.

Thornethorn · 10/08/2022 13:14

He needs to lose his job. What a menace.

But I would have considered what might happen to my DD tomorrow before doing it.
