To think posting pictures of yourself crying is literally a cry for help?

I want to make it clear that I am not making light of anyone’s mental health issues - and if that’s how this comes across, I apologise in advance. I also apologise if I don’t know the whole story.

To be honest though, I was a little eye-rolley about that woman that recently married Brooklyn Beckham this week when she posted a picture of herself on Instagram showing she was crying. I feel it’s a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who is living in desperate times (poverty being one of the main reasons).

I’m not saying for a second rich people can’t be upset but positing it on a site that thousands/millions of people can access feels a little bit wrong and self absorbed to me. AIBU?

I should have changed my title to ‘posting pictures of yourself crying is self absorbed ‘ but felt that perhaps was a little too harsh.

It's pathetic. We've turned into a society of emotional incontinents.

hattie43 · 09/08/2022 14:31

I am astounded at the number of young people who just can't manage life . They have no resilience at all and it makes you wonder what they would do in a real emergency or traumatic situation

Youdoyoutoday · 09/08/2022 14:34

It's so attention seeking, horribly so!!

Sometimes it's the small things though. Everyone copes differently with different things. I'm the most resilient person you will meet, if you need CPR doing, or your leg is hanging off and you need me to hold someone's hand when they die, I'm fine and will be the calm person fixing things

It's small things that tend to tip me over the edge, and anything to do with my pets

What exactly is she so upset about? I saw it posted on a local news site and I lost the will to live after the 3rd sentence

eyekogirl · 09/08/2022 14:35

Call me cynical, but I wonder how many extra followers she got by posting her 'vulnerable' side? It feels like a tick box exercise to show she 'real'.

Badgirlriri · 09/08/2022 14:35

I hate crying photos!

I just googled it and had a quick skim - something like her parents and various siblings taught her to be tough and not show her vulnerable side growing up, so she's doing it now (with carefully styled hair and make up, of course), or some b*llocks to that effect. 😁

I’m so glad it’s not just me!

I actually think it's a bit of a trend. It drives me mad and I'm an emotional person. Some people, especially celebs absolutely thrive on the drama and you can see them almost squeezing a tear out. 'Oh no, how embarrassing, don't look at me...gather gather' . Aaaaand post.

Crying is nothing to be ashamed of nor is it something to be massively proud of. It is what it is. A release.

I actually can't comment on the picture you mean though, but generally, yes, I think it's getting a bit OTT and downright annoying.

Verybritishproblems101 · 09/08/2022 14:46

I hate this. Vicki Pattison does this every time she gets her period😐

Criiinge · 09/08/2022 14:49

I'm sure (I hope) this example is only one of very few but I knew a girl who posted a picture of herself crying onto social media just before she committed suicide. I dont know the complete full story behind it.

Everybody has their own struggles and I wouldn't for a second try to compare or second guess anybody's state of mind/mental health but if anybody doing something like that just for the attention is beyond me.

I haven't seen the pic or heard the story just giving my opinion!

JanisMoplin · 09/08/2022 14:50

Absolutely despise this trend. I like a big of reticence.

JanisMoplin · 09/08/2022 14:50

Bit of!

I agree. It's absolutely pathetic to see these video of people crying about what a hard day/some stupid thing. It's Clickbait. The worst are those instamum type crying over it and giving advice. It's always women though.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 09/08/2022 14:51

It’s a cry for attention, not a cry for help. If someone was actually upset there’s no way they’d get their phone out and take a snap
of themselves. Especially not all posed. I get secondhand embarrassment.

You should have posted this because this is what you mean.

A 'cry for help' isn't a bad thing, that's not a negative term. It's putting something out there that communicates directly or indirectly that you need help. So YANBU for that. People posting a crying selfie are asking for help, whatever form that might take.

It's not something I can imagine doing but then I don't know whether I might if I got into a place dark enough.

OnaBegonia · 09/08/2022 15:09

Maybe she's realised marrying Brooklyn wasn't a great career move 🤣

Absolutely this!

It’s literally all about attention which is just do cringey!

But people will literally do anything for attention on the internet even if it means making themselves look like twats.

abblie · 09/08/2022 15:15

Personally I think she's deliberately attacking posh spice with this crap cos it's been everywhere how they both don't get on I could be wrong but I cry and never post it on social media maybe I should lol

As a young person in their 20s I actually do agree with you in a way.. I've had a number of friends who have been signed off sick for a month at work stress or anxiety, which I understand some people need to do (for example one of my friends mums died so would have understood in that situation) but these particular friends just seemed to not be able to cope with normal everyday life, whereas I would only use that if I absolutely needed to
