To think Apple is far superior to android?

In terms of iPhones are better than android? Is it true that androids are less secure and more likely to have viruses? And that they crash and become unresponsive a lot? I have an iPhone but DH has an android and I can’t even use it, I hate it

It’s quite simple. By definition open-source operating systems and software are distributed with a licence that generally allows anyone to use, study, change, or share its source code, without restrictions on how the software is used or by whom.

Which means ZERO limits to include freedom to do evil. It’s been used on US fighter jets to you know, to bomb the fuck out of civilians…does Afghan wedding massacre ring a bell? Another specific case is software engineer Seth Vargo found that Chef was using his open-source code and had a contract with ICE- who was violating the human rights of Mexican migrants at the US border. And he could do nothing to stop his code from being used to violate human rights.

It also means Copycat Bob can take Stan’s 10,000hrs of open source work, do a few tweaks over a weekend and then commercialise it and sell it. Profiting off Stan’s work. A 2020 report by Synopsys that reviewed more than 1,000 copywrite applications for software found that 99 per cent contained open-source components. How is such legalised pirating ethical?

There’s also been issues with open source algorithms marketed on social media to be top quality and for example, embedded in job application screening tools by companies….but then later discovered they’re deliberately written to be biased against minority/female/older/etc applicants. So open source has no checks to ensure it is even written in an ethical way in the first place. You have no guarantee as to the intentions of the software engineer writing the code.

Please stop. This is the most embarassing thing I've ever read.

You really have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, and it's summer up by the final paragraph.

"So open source has no checks to ensure it is even written in an ethical way in the first place. You have no guarantee as to the intentions of the software engineer writing the code."

The clue is in the name - open source - that means anyone with a brain, can read the program and decipher exactly what the code does. If you don't understand, or trust the code, then 6ou don't use it. It is that simple. So open source software has more checks than closed source software because every software engineer on the planet can collectively read the code.

Please stop.arguing because you really are proving you have zero clue what you're on about.

You remind me of people who are complaining that they didn't understand that their interest only mortgage required a repayment of the principal amount.

SnowyPetals · 09/08/2022 06:26

I don't really understand what all the fuss and debate is about. I have switched between both several times. They're both just phones and I haven't had any problems with either of them.

Redglitter · 09/08/2022 06:35

and the fact when you buy a new iPhone or iPad it all just works - no logging in, no faffing. Just put it next to your old phone and hey presto it’s done. The fact it updates your new credit card in wallet without drama and then saves your card details to prepopulate for online shopping. Saves all the passwords, connects everything to “Find My” app

My Samsung does all that too

I agree! There are good and less good features in both!

BigYellowElephant · 09/08/2022 06:38

I think its just what you're used to. I've recently moved to apple as it makes it easier to manage the teens phones. I HATE it and miss my Samsung phones terribly but its just easier to all have the same. Far far more storage on android and they seem to have less issues. I also think they look nicer. Some good features on the iphones though, particularly the screen time management for the teens

SwanBuster · 09/08/2022 06:40

As for arguing that 'open source software can be used for evil so it's unethical' - the same applies to a kitchen knife, or a car, or a television (which can be used to watch propaganda) and any number of other inventions or things.

An iPhone can be used for evil purposes. Whilst apple's app store prevents the widescale distribution of apps it doesn't approve of, there's absolutely nothing stopping a developer from writing an app of closed source code in their own home and running that on their phone to do all manner of unethical things.

This line of argument falls at the first hurdle.

Arnaquer · 09/08/2022 06:42

I'm Apple all the way.
My works phone is a Samsung galaxy and I can't stand it.
I do think the camera on them is better though that's iPhone but I can't see me ever changing

TheBikiniExpert · 09/08/2022 06:42

I had an iphone many years ago and it was ok but they have got so expensive. I don't know how ordinary people afford them. I now have a Samsung which costs a fraction of the price, great camera and does everything I need. Not sure what an apple would do better except cost 4 times as much.

Maybebabyno2 · 09/08/2022 06:45

I made the switch to Android about 5 years ago and would never go back. I love my Samsung fold more than any phone I have ever used. I have had it over a year now and I will be keeping it till it dies a death. Best phone I have ever had.

I like the interface on android more than Apple but it took me a while to get used to it originally. I also like that I have more control over the content and apps are cheaper compared to Apple and there is loads more free content.

lot123 · 09/08/2022 06:47

If you know someone that's worked for one of the big mobile phone companies for 20 odd years, you'd question the running assumption that Apple win on ethical grounds. Not if you're trying to deal with them as a purchaser of their products, they have some fairly aggressive practices to say the least.

Apple market their products cleverly and, whatever people think of the technology, that plays a large part. Particularly Apple customers that insist iPhones are far superior but haven't ever owned a non-Apple phone. I've owned both and I found them pretty similar, other than the price.

I own a Range Rover which is also marketed heavily as a higher end brand. Is it any better than the cheaper four wheel drives? No, not really (in reality, it's a rubbish build quality and spends most of its time in the garage being fixed). It looks nice but I'm paying for the brand rather than any great difference in functionality.

ChampagneCharlieIsMyName · 09/08/2022 06:49

I had one iPhone, once!
I think the screen broke when I sneezed in the next room.
I loved that it ‘talked’ with my iPad but I prefer my galaxy phone.

RampantIvy · 09/08/2022 06:52

It's comparing apples with oranges isn't it.
How many on here are comparing exactly like for like - phones with the same features and functionality?

christmassausages · 09/08/2022 06:57

I prefer the keyboard on my Samsung. Letters, numbers and full stop and comma all on the one screen. None of this swiping to get to numbers and punctuation. Also, a much larger screen.

Is the Apple screen time management significantly different to the Android version? I set my children up with Google Family Link when they first got their phones and it does pretty much every I need, although it would be nice if there was a lighter touch version for older teens.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 09/08/2022 07:00

Definitely. I went to the dark side a few years ago and bought an Android. I quickly scuttled back to Apple when I realised my mistake! Love my AirPods to go with my phone too 😆

SaskiaRembrandt · 09/08/2022 07:00

Haven't RTFT but just wanted to comment on the claim that Android phones can't be synced across deivces. They absolutely can. I used to have Samsung phones but now have a Pixel. I've been able to sync my phones to my other devices. My Pixel is currently synced with a PC, a laptop, a Chromebook ,and a tablet.

Also agree with PP saying the comparison isn't valid. Apple/iPhone is a brand; Android is an OS which is used by numerous manufacturers.

Solokidydad · 09/08/2022 07:02

For those comparing Apple phones (batteries, ect) you are aware apple does not produce its own components. They have Samsung produced batteries, Toshiba, Qualcomm, Sony, ect, parts. There is no special apple 🍏 fairy dust just bloody expensive marketing.

As for more secure, android and custom android builds can be far more secure depending on your tech skills, just as Linux can be far more secure than OSX.

Apple is a closed system for people who don't want to think about IT, or it skills. It's like a bike with stabilisers fitted.

There are poor android phones and amazing android phones, so those who say I had an android for work, means apsolutley nothing. You more than likely had a locked down version of Android on an average phone.

It's true apple are for sheep 😊

Wineislifealways · 08/08/2022 21:31

I can’t even use DH’s phone, I don’t know you manage to use both and like both tbh 😂

Yabu iphones are shit. Have used both and my android is far far superior in literally every way.

countrygirl99 · 09/08/2022 07:07

I have both. Work phone is an iPhone, personal is android. I hate the iPhone, love my Samsung.

GladysGladioli · 09/08/2022 07:09

Stabbitystabstab · 08/08/2022 22:08

Gosh
Aren't we tribal? 😄

It's mad isn't it?!

DashboardConfessional · 09/08/2022 07:13

YABU. My S21 is a thing of beauty and the camera is far better than my husband's iPhone of the same age.

Buttons294749 · 09/08/2022 07:15

I had an iphone but found it crashed a lot and generally found it annoying. I get galaxy S range now, DH has my old phone - going strong 7 plus years

What i really miss is the blackberry keyboard

CardiffMam · 09/08/2022 07:17

I much prefer Android phones. I had a brilliant Samsung phone I've now passed on to my son and I've now got a Google phone which I'm very impressed with. My daughter insists on getting an iPhone even though the spec I can afford is much lower than if she got an Android phone. I'm afraid she's been taken in by the marketing.

BananaBender · 09/08/2022 07:19

iPhone all the way. My DH has Android phones. They suck and need replacing way sooner than my iPhone. Still on my first iPhone and DH is on his 4th or 5th Android phone. They freeze or get laggy and generally become barely functional. Apart from shit battery life and a microphone issue my iPhone is still great after 4.5 years.

I hate using his phone and he hates using mine. DD happily uses whichever one she can get her hands and can use both easily enough.

Stabbitystabstab · 09/08/2022 07:24

The person wittering on about ethics...
Wasn't it the apple factory in China that actually installed suicide nets because workers couldn't cope and kept launching themselves?

Pretty much every electronic device has ethical grey areas
