To think Apple is far superior to android?

In terms of iPhones are better than android? Is it true that androids are less secure and more likely to have viruses? And that they crash and become unresponsive a lot? I have an iPhone but DH has an android and I can’t even use it, I hate it

you say that but I have friends (non-techie) that really struggle with trying to get photos out of icloud ..

Nowadays they all play nicely together really but, as others have said, I prefer a phone running Android as it then functions more like a laptop for me (possibly iphone 12s could too, i dont know as I haven't used one). I find the the icloud account very clunky (for kids phones)

Regardless of the operating system, I think Apple have better quality engineering than other companies, this has been my experience, things seem to last really well. Here’s a list of machines I’m still using that function perfectly.

2015 iPad Air, ds10 own this, gets a lot of use. Home button bit funny but that it. Battery still reasonable.
2015 iPhone5. Replaced now but still works
2014 Mac mini. Used in a commercial setting daily for 7yrs, long hours.

2008(!!!) Mac Pro 3.1 quad core. Use it to wfh. Still very very fast for many tasks.

Show me a Dell or Samsung that can do those things. So purely from a long lasting perspective, I prefer Apple.

RampantIvy · 09/08/2022 18:41

I prefer ABA (anything but Apple)

I have a Toshiba laptop from 2000 that still works. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My oldest android tablet is from 2006 and that still works too, as do my old android phones, a couple of which are 10+ years.

Aren't a lot of Apple parts from other big tech brands?

A 2008 Mac Pro quad core is just an Intel Xeon x5650 iirc. Plenty of them still running fine in either custom x58 builds or say, a Dell precision workstation. I've 3 PCs and 2 Mac of that era and they all work fine.

There's nothing magic about that era of early intel apple builds.

I've also a 1991 386dx that still works 🤷🏻‍♀️

OneTonNoodles · 09/08/2022 21:16

Apple is overpriced shite. Can't do anything with them. Open source Androids soothe my soul.

JudgeJ · 09/08/2022 21:19

vegang · 08/08/2022 21:30

I have an iPhone and prefer it aesthetically but my battery is rubbish compared to DPs android and my phone crashes and freezes a lot and his doesn't

I would take reliability over aesthetics every time!

housemaus · 09/08/2022 21:27

I much prefer my Android to my work iPhone/iPhones I've owned in the past (although it's been about 5 years since I had one as a personal phone, I switched after a few years of iPhones and didn't look back!).

Photo quality seems better, not tied to Apple store apps, cheaper, no stupid proprietary charger, my current phone is a Pixel so linked to my Google account really smoothly (with my laptop, all my freelance work in G suite, my Google home, our home security cameras etc etc... all tied in), there's a greater variation of handset styles over the same slightly-tweaked iPhone every 2 years, can delete bloatware much more easily...

The only thing I prefer iPhones for are the better-looking emojis, ha

BashfulClam · 09/08/2022 21:31

My iPhone has never ‘frozen or crashed’ I’d take it to the Genius Bar if it did. My colleague has android and it’s a bit shit. DH trued android and went back to Apple within 6 months due to how clunky and useless it was. I have way more memory that my colleague as I tell her about certain apps and she complains she can’t add anything else. Also the wood are Apple approved whereas on Android anyone can write and upload an app.

The best thing about using an iPhone is that it seamlessly syncs to my Mac and AirPod Pro’s.

But it means that all your tech has to be Apple. Not everyone wants or can afford to own all Apple tech.

The customer service from Apple is brilliant - can anyone say that about Samsung, Motorola etc?

I don't know because I have never needed to contact customer ervice about any of my Samsung phones Grin

But customer service isn't just about when things go wrong (and by the way, I'm on my third iPhone and nothing's gone wrong with any of them, it's also - for Apple customers - knowing if you have a question about your tech you can go on their website and go on their live chat and get that question quickly answered, or walk into a store if you're near one and ask one of the staff there.

I think the syncing is what I like the most - saves me time and there's no faffing around signing in to my Google account, like a PP said they have to do with their Samsung phone.

It is zero faff to sign in to your Google account when you initially set the phone up and then you never have to sign in again unless you manually customise the settings to sign out ... literally takes seconds

Right. So how does it work with your PC and syncing? You’d have to sign in on that, wouldn’t you?

I think it’s pretty good that a machine that old can still work, not exactly magic, but to do email, and sync to your other stuff is not what I’d expect from a 2008 pc. Can the system you describe integrate with your phone and other devices?

Fwiw my experience of toshiba was that my partner got through 3 laptops in 10 years, not massively bad but then I bought a Toshiba tv and it failed 6 months after warranty, so when things last a good few years before packing up, I like that. Apple has been good like that for me.

Yeah, it can. Because it’s perfectly possible to hackintosh it to run all the way up to big sur using opencore.

apples hardware in the entire intel era was nothing more than generic kit with a few artificial locks. The processor, gpu, ssds, memory etc we’re all standard.

SwanBuster · 10/08/2022 00:07

Indeed a Mac Pro 3.1 can also be taken beyond apples artificial OS limits if you circumvent apples restrictions. you just gotta know what you’re doing.

Lonelycrab · 10/08/2022 00:22

hackintosh

Very good if you’re an anorak but it’s not here or there, and anyway half your stuff probably won’t run oops!

My Mac Pro was 130 quid and kicks butt, does all the stuff I want so it’s pretty amazing to me.

It is clearly better engineered than your average dell from that vintage, on quite a few levels, hence they’re more likely to still be running. That’s been my experience anyway. Taken a fair few generic pcs to the tip over the last decade but not any Apples so far.

Total bullshit.

SwanBuster · 10/08/2022 00:28

When you’ve been messing with this stuff for 35 years, you know a bit. As you say - anorak basically means ‘I know my shit’. This, I can work round pretty much any issue. If you wanna be stuck on El Capitan, have at it.

the Mac Pro 3.1 is a superb machine.

but it is no more well engineered than a good quality x58 motherboard and the other conponents that make up a system.

Dell Precision workstations from that era are solid as hell, too. I’d rather have the Mac Pro, but the dells work just fine too.

SwanBuster · 10/08/2022 00:31

If you, you know - actually know how a computer works, what components are likely to achieve the highest compatibility etc and how to configure it you can pretty much get anything to work on a hackintosh.

Theres not much point any more given how damn good the M1 machines are if you can afford one though. But hobbyists and the type of people who are both smart and don’t like throwing always working kit can do almost anything.

Lonelycrab · 10/08/2022 00:31

Yes exactly. Why contradict me then? Why state - ‘doubt it works?!’

Lonelycrab · 10/08/2022 00:40

Didn’t mean to tread on anyones toesHmm

The Apple stuff I’ve had works really well and has been reliable, and has held up well over time. Sorry that is a problem for you.

It’s not. You bought a great machine.

Just don’t knock other stuff if you don’t know what you’re talking about when doing comparisons.

Yes, some shitty PC with a crap power supply isn’t going to be as reliable or well engineered as a Mac Pro. But you’re doing an incredibly unfair comparison. A PC costing (probably half of too) what a Mac Pro did In 2008 is also very likely still running.

mynamesnotMa · 10/08/2022 00:48

All my children have iphones as they are young and impressed my gadgets and marketing.
I have a work iPhone which I hate it's such a wank.

Lonelycrab · 10/08/2022 00:50

You’re right @SwanBuster theres nothing to say that any one thing, components wise is a big thing, so agree there.
